no problem, I just searched for "mm inches" "liter feet", etc. There are some online calculators that will convert their metric mumbo-jumbo into our clearly superior Standard measurement system. :)
I was teaching a sixth grade math class about six weeks ago and we were doing conversions between metric and standard units of measure. After struggling through this for about 20 minutes the one sixth grader gave the most priceless comment on the whole situation: "You know, the whole rest of the world must think we are idiots for measuring this way, the metric stuff is so much easier to figure out." I didn't know what to say other than "Your probably right." :).

I guess I should know this, but are they bringing the Mazda2 to North America?
Yes, in one form or another. Word is that it will be badged as a Ford and will be built in Brazil. Ford just shipped the lead engineer on the mustang to Brazil to facilitate the production of the car.

Is there an ETA for the Mazda2?
My wife has hijacked the 5 and forced me to drive our old Jeep.
The tourque is fun, but I miss the handling and braking of the 5.
I have been eying the 3, but would love to eek out a few more mpgs with the price of gas what it is.

Beause, even though we hate to admit it, Ford holds a controlling stake in Mazda, and therefore any decision regarding the release of either a Ford or Mazda product in the states goes through Ford.

I had to edit cause I think I got your point. So, too much for my rhetorical question (scratch)
So, if I got it right, Ford in other countries already sells the MZ2 disguised as a Fiesta? I really hope if it comes branded as a Ford in NA, at least the Ford marketing fellows are more creative with the car's name and don't leave it as is.

The Mazda2 was introduced at last week's Geneva Motor Show. They showed the 1.3 litre version which gets 43.6mpg. It goes on sale immediately in Europe. The smaller version has a different front end treatment than the upscale model Autoblog.com showed earlier. The latter is definately a treat for the eyes in dark gray with it's CX-7 look-alike arched front fenders, cool 16" alloys, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shifter knob. The center stack bows outwards and the audio display is an oval shape surrounded with a chrome bezel with similar bright metal surrounding the controls on each side. Not highly reflective, it's more like an edge trim.
Size-wise think of other sub-compacts with the bobed-tail look and a Z-4 character line sculpture sweaping along the lower door area. The high-end Mazda2 comes with front disc brakes and rear drums similar to the earlier Mazda Protegé. It will be over 400 pounds lighter though. Unlike all other Mazdas, it will have an H-type beam axel in the rear instead of independent suspension -- i.e. Toyota Corolla.
So, a Mazda3 may be a better choice even though the Mazda2 looks like what a mid-decade 21st Century car should be. It's styling is way ahead of Honda's compact car.
Mazda is considering selliing it in North America next year if they can get production up. They expect to sell 1500 in the UK alone.

Mazda2 would be good competition for the newbies to this catagory...
Toyota Yaris
Honda Fit
Upcoming VW Polo
Hyundai Accent
Nissan Versa
...and according to this article: http://www.fordaustraliaforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=203340 Ford and Mazda will hook up for a small B-series car (smaller than Focus or 3)

Easily the best styling in the class. When they came out, I thought the Fit and Yaris were kind of cool looking… this is sexy. I couldn't access the images in Autoblog, so I hope what I found is what'll see production.

jandree22: Those are the pics AutoBlog showed first, the one I was describing above as the upmarket model. Very cool looking car, beats the Mazda3 by a mile in styling. The whole front fascia is different with a wider air intake and sharp edge design. Note the glovebox has a vertial slot for storing road maps so drivers do not have to dig inside for them. I like the red instrument lighting too. A North Amercan model would have to have more rear bumper than the model in the photo.
All these little cars have the same design problem, the bobbed tail which makes rear end accidents very worrying. On the otherhand, a small car can scoot out of the way if the driver sees what is coming at him and reacts in time.
Before VW introduced a car called the Fox Audi had a car by the same name in the 1970s. I had one of those which got me hooked on FWD. On one trip in the country on a two-lane twisty road a big dump truck came around a curve too fast and swirved into the lane I was in (going in the opposit direction), to avoid being a greasy spot in the road I ran up an embankment, as the truck zoomed past, and then back down to the road. If I had been in a big American car half of it would have been trashed at least. It was THAT close.

Ford is using Mazda for the new Ford which Ford is bringing to the states. It was not absolute that Mazda would bring the 2 to the states, thus the confusion with Ford over Mazda, and which car would come here.

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/20/spy-shots-2008-ford-fiesta-test-mule/
The European take:
Part of the mechanical components will come courtesy of the Ford global parts bin, Frankensteining from the new Mazda 2 and the Ford Ka being developed in conjunction with the Fiat 500. The Fiesta will also come packed with everything from stability control to Bluetooth connectivity and airbags galore when it launches early next year, with delivery following in summer 2008.

I read somewhere that Mazda Canada will not be bringing over the Mazda2 since they believe that the '2' will take away sales from the ever so popular Mazda3. They're probably correct about that.
Too bad.

I read that they are bringing it over, after the recent Euro show. When and where if you recall, did you read your info? Sounds more like someone's opinion to me. This car is a SUBcompact, to compete with Yaris, Aveo, Fit, Versa, not the compact Mazda3/Corolla/Civic/Centra, etc
(I did just read that Mazda is not sure they'd have enough capacity to fill orders in Asia and Europe and still have enough units left over for the states. However, other speculation is that Ford is having Mazda hold off until it's Fiesta is ready to go. We'll have to see )

Since Ford's stake is in MNAO and not Mazda Japan, Ford does have say in what Mazda brings to North America.
That being said, I would absolutely LOVE a Mazda2!!! A hybrid Mazda2 please.

Hi Kid,
I read this in one of the local papers a few weeks ago....It was direct quote from a senior exec of Mazda Canada. It could be that they will bring it to the US and not Canada since the Mazda3 is a very hot seller here in Canada.
Who's to say what will/will not happen. For my part I certainly hope they bring it over since I will surely buy one.

Yea, I edited my post after doing some research. Seems more about capacity then sales. They don't think they can build enough 2s to fill orders in Japan, Asia, Europe, and and the US. So maybe they will let Ford handle that. The Ford based on the 2 doesn't look that bad, it's like a safe Mazda2. However, it's a Ford and that means everything and no sale for me.

There's a pic of it, I'll try and look for it again.
It's Ford. So you also have to deal with Ford to service it. Ford doesn't offer rentals during service like Mazda. Also, Ford doesn't strike me as a company that gives much a crap for it's customers, whereas I love my local Mazda service department.

I thought ford only owned 30% of Mazda?
And the new 2 looks (boobs). They have a market for that car over here nd theyre only losing out by not bringing it over. I would drive one of those as a commuted car instead of the SmartForTwo that im thinking about getting
Mazda makes some pretty neat looking cars overseas that we will never see over here.
enjoy!
This weeks Autoweek states that Mazda will NOT bring the 2 to the states. They are more focused on building the market base for the Cx7 and Cx9. I think that is Mazda speak for "Ford wants to bring the Festiva, and we are letting them play this part of the North American market on their own."

Cx7, Cx9, nice but too big for the actual useful space they actually offer. But well, I'm not part of that crossover type market target, I accept.
