So you wouldnt need hood pins.

Probably just because its made out of the same metal as the rest of the car and they had no reason to make it of anything else, its still pretty weak as it is if you ask me.

I installed gas struts for the hood and was amazed at how thin the metal is. When I drilled the first hole it surprised me how quick it punched through.

it could be the added weight of the ducting for the tmic as the reg 3 hood was found to be relativly light when compared to a c/f hood iirc.

It's the cost I tell you. Costs more to make it out of another material. It helps keep the cost of the vehicle down.

Yeah, aluminium prices are reeeally high right now for whatever reason. Subaru has stopped using aluminium hoods on the WRX, now it's even more of a porker.

Dealer pointed out hood weight when I was looking to buy mine, he said it was to add stability. Wasn't sure if that was just bs or what but it sounded sort of fishy. Has anyone replaced the hood with carbon fiber or any other lighter material and noticed any problems? my guess would be no.

sounds like bs but then again you don't really see autobahn burners with c/f hoods... could be part of it as it is rated for 155mph...

Well you don't see the CF, but on many crazy performance cars it's there. Mainstream midsize sedans here come with Aluminum hood and trunk lids, they're as light as the CF ones (or damn close). Mazda just did it as a cost savings, any other reason is BS.

It only weighs 39 lbs, I just took it off and weighed it. That's not very much.
