Has anyone out there used the Transmission Upgrade from protegegarage.com? I looked at the price and what comes in the package and it seems reasonable...what do ya'll think?

I jsut bought those parts and more from the dealer. It was way cheaper for me, but we Canadians get Mazda parts REAL cheap. It's a good deal, but I would also add the revised 3/4 synchros, the upgraded 1/2 shift fork, MSP clutch fork, clutch release fork pin, and the FC throwout bearing. I just did all those for a little less than the PG kit, but liek I said, we get parts MAD cheap up here. Ken's kit is a good deal for americans.

Maxx Mazda

Forgot to add, you might also want the upgraded 4th gears, not included in the kit.

The other upgraded parts that u got (synchros, 4th gear etc.) where did you get those parts from? I guess if I'm gonna get the kit for stronger 3rd and 5th gear plus the LSD, I might as well strengthen ALL of the gears, right?

All from the dealer my friend. Like I said... But for soem reason you americans pay like twice what we do for parts. Fo everything I listed above (including revised LSD) It cost me just over $700 CAD.

CantCMe

Did you purchase the extra parts because you wanted to make sure u wouldn't run into problems down the road or did u feel it was needed to handle any extra power? And what's the difference between the regular 1/2 shift fork and the upgraded one?

I'd like to start ordering parts from your Mazda dealer! There is no dealer here in Ontario with prices like that, even with our local dealers that sponsor TOprotege (up to 17% off parts) the LSD alone is more then what you paid for everything.

The revised 1/2 fork is beefier. I bought all the parts because I was already in the transmission, and wanted the best I could get.

So do you feel the difference in the changes that you made? Was is all worth it to you? Do you think eventually you'll have to replace the clutch? I know I'm asking alot of questions but I'm trying to get all the input I can before I open the tranny up. Thanks for all of your help.

Yeah, might as well replace that, too. I've had cars in the past that lived it's entire life on the factory clutch. But hopefully (before the car dies) I'll have my 200 whp so the factory clutch will have to go.

LOL...Habit. I do it at work all day. For some reason my co-workers think I'm mad all the time when I send them messages(shrug) ...but they react faster so that's great!!

Eventually I want to slap a turbo on the car so I don't want tranny problems afterwards. But for now I just want it to work the way it supposed to, and since I gotta go crack it open, might at well go all out. How much boost did u run to get to 200whp?

oh yeah, I meant just mazdaspeed acc, I saw it this morn at my dealership, they have a poster with an rx-8 with mazdaspeed intakes, etc.., but I thought maybe since it's an old-er model that they weren't selling the lsd, at the dealer anyways.

And before I forget, the dealership just called me about my tranny...they claim it would be at least $2300 (!!!) to fix the trans...and they haven't even opened it up! Are they nuts? I think they love wasting people's time and stealing people's money...they said the problem (pops out of 3rd) warrants them to open the transmission and "take a look inside". DUH!?!?!! Maybe they thought they could fix it through osmosis or something. I'll be picking my car up shortly...and getting it fixed somewhere else!!

LSD problems is it snapped. Same as everyother MSP. It has 80k miles on it.
New Parts
LSD(revised), clutch, timing belt, front and rear motor mounts, two new tires, H&R Springs less than a year, steering rack, suspension bushings. 3k-4k on maintenance that whoever buys it won't have to worry about.

Hood needs some loving, was going to do that before the LSD bill raped me.

I'm thinking 10k for it but everything is negotiable.

I plan on the syhchros, forks, etc. at some point. I have the PG tranny kit installed right now. I might think about the GTX 4th gear as well. We'll see because I'm starting to think about going past my original self-imposed 12 psi max boost restriction......Confound these 2002 transmissions!!!

Well, the biggest difference to me is the LSD. No more one wheel burnouts, just torque steer. LOL. As far as the gears go, I have been told that it will change your gear ratio a tad but I don't think it did.

I took my car to an Aamco transmission shop to get it fixed, and they say it would be better (and cheaper) to just swap the tranny. He claims he can order a JDM spec transmission and I was wondering if anybody knows whether they come with LSD's or not?(uhm) He also claims they're stronger and the gearing is a little different.

Hahahahahaha... Sorry dude, didn't mean to laugh.

JDM trannys are exactly the same. Even if he did get one, you wouldn't know the difference in his eyes. He'd probably just do a tranny service on your original trans and say he swapped it. Aamco steals.

Ya man, there really is no such thing as a "JDM" trans. They'e the exact same as what's already in your car. Possibly with more miles. I smell bullshit from them. Just be careful. Check the build date o nthe tranny too, and see if it's newer than yours. If it is, it'll have the revised synchros and 1-2 shift fork.

I went to pick up my car...there's NO way I'm gonna get them to do the work. Before I get somebody to just junk the old tranny I would like to know what's broke inside of it. It seems like nobody wants to actually open it up to see what's broke...I wanna know just to know. I'm gonna try some other spots in my area. Aamco just wants to get paid and get rid of the old tranny. It might be something simple but I want to decide if the old one gets fixed before it's thrown out. The saga continues...

So is it the shift forks and the synchronizerse that mainly keep the transmission in gear? I'm sure it's more to it than that, but I'm wondering if these are two of the main parts I need to be looking at to replace. If it's gonna only be a couple of parts or it's gonna be about $500-$700 to fix that then I don't really need a new tranny right?
