View Full Version : Pissed - can't get engine cover off - dealer cross-threaded bolt

I got my MS3 CAI and went out to install it. OK the first step: take off the engine cover. Hum this should be the easiest step right?
Wrong. One of the 10mm bolts was cross-threaded by the dealer last time I had her in to fix the P2006 CEL (they replaced the runner).
I didn't notice it at first and started to put a bit of muscle into it and it would not budge - at all. After I inspected it, it is visually inserted at an angle and there is about 3/16" of free space between the top of the bolt and the engine cover. I was going to try and get it out but then realized it might snap off and then the dealer would blame me.
Now I'm PISSED, http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_mad.gif http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_mad.gif remember my last rant where the dealer put 20 miles on the car? The easiest bolt on the whole car and a certified tech can't get it right. So I'm supposed to trust these clowns to work on the engine? I'm going into the dealer tomorrow and talk to the manager of the entire dealership. I called him and he was out so I left a voice mail and he knows I'm pissed. I'm going to tell him if this is the kind of service they do, then I'm taking my car else where.
I'm also going to explain the 20 miles they put on my car last time.
What would you guys do if this happened to you?

I hope everything works out for you.

Definitely go to the manager and ask wtf his clown mechanics are doing.
For sure ask about the 20miles, a bit much for a test drive.
Maybe they needed a car to take a customer home?! j/k Don't want to get you even more going!!
Hope you sort things out with your dealer, keep us up-to-date.

I'd like for them to say that! So I crossthreaded the bolt attempting to REMOVE it? Humm, I'd have a bit of fun with that one. (rant)(rant)(rant) I'll let you know what went down at the stealership today.
Yea, it sucks, I finally get my CAI, now I can't install it. Instead I gotta go waste my time and gas, cuz some a-wipe "certified technician" screwed my car up. I'm pissed and in a bad mood.
I have purchased 3 cars from this dealer so I would hope they will make me happy.

Agreed. Get a blow job from somebody that works there first then have them repair the threads. The thread repair should take 15 minutes wether they re-tap or use a heli-coil, not sure how long a BJ would take.
Sloppy work to cross thread one of those fasteners though.

UPDATE - Dealer didn't return phone calls yesterday. Called service and they said they had no openings, MAYBE they could squeeze me in on Monday. I asked for the service manager - he already left. I told them to tell him I was pissed and would be in Saturday AM to talk to him in person. Today I pulled up to the service garage at the dealer and pulled my car in after they opened the door. I think they were expecting me cuz the service manager came out immediately and asked me what the problem was. I opened the hood and calmly pointed out why I was pissed. He was pretty cool about it and asked what he could do to make me happy. I said repair the problem so I can't tell it ever was a problem and install my CAI for free. He said no problem!!! http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_biggrin.gif They gave me a new CX-7 loaner and said they might not have it done till Monday. I'm ok with that. Hopefully the clown tech who was responsible catches hell from the service manager. I don't think they would have been so accomodating if I would have went in there yelling and screaming. So keep your cool at the dealer and just present the facts!

The Happy ending - is not so happy.
Well I got my Speed3 back today. Recall from previous posts that the dealer agreed to fix the bolt he cross-threaded and install my Mazda CAI for free to restore confidence. The car runs great. Got her home and opened up the hood: UNREAL, I know for sure there was no dent as I took everything out when I got it and it was perfect. Humm are the Mazda techs gorillas? Now what?

Humm, well I thought I was getting a good deal getting them to install the CAI, how hard is it to screw that up? Apparently it's not that hard if you're a monkey with a set of tools. (huh) What is so crazy about this whole situation is they knew I was PISSED about incompetent workmanship from the last visit (crossthreaded bolt), so you would think they would go out of their way to make this install PERFECT.

Gotta believe it was an accident, but their review of the finished work is dismal at best. I'm gonna see how much free stuff I can get out of them for my aggrivation and utter waste of time and gas pissing around with all this crappy workmanship.
CBE at dealer cost ? Installed free ?
Gift card X hours of free service ?

man, i think they owe you plenty now, 20 miles probably joy riding in your car, screwed up and EASY bolt to put in, and now they mess up your intake!!!! I would get them to replace the intake, and then stop going to that dealership all together, find a different one. They obviously can't do the simplest jobs, imagine if they needed to REALLY work on your car!!!

I wonder if it was done on purpose? Just curious. I'm not too sure how that dealer works or pays it's mechanics. But I think... I think... usually if the mechanic says they fixed something... and they don't. They don't get paid to work on it again. I think thats how some dealers are. But that's just what I heard from a Toyota dealer mechanic here. So if the service manager told the guy (who F'd up your car the first time) to install the CAI for free... maybe he got pissed since he wasn't getting paid for the job. I dunno. Just speculation on my part. But sucks to see that shit happen..... I'd find a new dealer! Even if it's a long drive!!

OK, here's an update:
Called the dealer this morning, spoke with service manager.
Here's the conversation:
Me: You are not gonna believe what's up with my car now.
Dealer: I know what you are gonna say, your CAI has a dent in it.
My tech noticed that after he had it installed, he called me over to verify it.
Me: Is this the same tech that cross-threaded my bolt?
Dealer:No, this is my best tech, hand-picked by me.
Me: I had the CAI in my hands after I unpacked it and was admiring it and it was definitely not dented.
Dealer:Well my tech did not do it, I trust him at his word.
Me: If the CAI was dented when you started on it, why didn't I get a call and why didn't you inform me of this yesterday when I picked up the car?
Dealer: Tech didn't see it until the job was finished.
Me: Well I think he dropped a wrench on it or something and didn't want to accept responsibility for it.
Dealer: (Gets mad now - raises voice) What will it take to make you happy?
Me: I want the piece that is dented replaced.
Dealer: That will cost me over $300
Me: No the dealer cost is $240, and I will install the new part myself.
Dealer: Do you know the part number ?
Me: I look up the part number and give it to him.
Dealer: I will call you when the part comes in.
Me: OK fine, I will be looking forward to your call.
End of conversation. I won't be letting those clowns touch any of my cars again. Sad thing is they have done everything fine for over 2 years. There best tech left a few months ago and so did some of the other cool people they had in their service dept. I bet they were just hoping I won't even notice the dent - what a bunch of losers.

Dent that looks like it has a fuking hole in it! I dont think a dropped wrench would do that. I bet the dude who F'd up your bolt, got his ass chewed, saw your car in the shop. He then went over and took a ball peen hammer and gave your intake a little whack, when nobody was around. The tech installing probably came back saw the dent and was like WTF.

Sounds like you should call Mazda of North America. I had a similar experience where the dealer would not work on my auto tranny on my AccordV6 when it wad obviously slipping. All they would do was change the tranny fluid. This happened over the course of six months. One call to Honda NA and the dealer was calling me asking why I called them and what would it take to get "Outstanding" service. Got a new tranny installed within a week and they put me on loaner.
Sometimes you have to bypass the chain of command to get sh!t done.

Depends how old the girls were!! hehe..
Anyways... Good to hear that they will replace the part. Sucks that it happened. Kinda reminds me of restaurants. You complain about the food being too cold, or not not fully cooked or whatever... Then they take it out back... spit in it.. (or other nasty things...) Then hand it back to you with that I'm soo sorry face.. hehe... (pukey)

I think your last post is prob the best. get it replaced DIY and never go there again. p.s. check the bolt before you get the part replaced and see if they really indeed "fix" it.
Why do I keep seeing dealer threads like this? maby we should start a "good dealer in your area" thread so we know which place to go to? Nah... fuck it that would be too easy.
