Hello fellow mazda drivers.
I need advise on picking oil and oil filter for my 03 protégé 2.0L.
I was thinking on going with Red Line synthetic oil 5-30, but the dealer told me to not to go with them because with the size of my engine I will never need it, and that I will be paying a lot for the name, instead I should go with mobile 1 synthetic oil. With mobile one I will feel a little more power, but nothing crazy. But I want to take extremely good care of my car inside out, just like all of you so that’s why I need a very good line of oil in my Proto. Also I want a K&N oil filter but again he said I have no use for that kind of filter for my car, instead I should use a mazda filter. Now my question is. If you were me what would you do in my situation? Go for the more expensive stuff or
Manufacture stuff?
Cheers

Mobile 1 synthetic and the Mazda filter should be just fine. There is little to no reason to try anything else as long as you change your oil and filter at the regular intervals. If it comes down to needing an aftermarket filter don't get a Fram filter. They suck. When you are at the dealer remember to get a new crush washer for the drain plug.

Mobile 1 synthetic is good, but was synthetic always ran in this car and how many miles are on it if not? The k&n oil filters work great, but he probably told you to use the Mazda filter because I was told by Mazda that their filters dont allow the oil to drain out after the car is shut off. This makes sure when you go to crank up your car next time that you have pleanty of oil where you need it and dont have to wait to get it moving. I dont know how true this is or if its even that big of a deal but I would stick with the Mazda filter as long as there not over priced.
If I were you I would probably run the Mobile 1 with the K&N, but thats just me. Lets get some more opinions in here...

First let me thank you guys for responding. I have around 87,000 KM. now i did have Mobile 1 in before but the I took my car to a quike oil change company (Mr. lube) and they had no idea what to do, so even since that I’ve been going to the dealer and what ever oil they use is what I’ve been using for the past 4 months. But is there any danger to the engine when it comes to changing oil from 10-30 to 5-30? And OEM filters to aftermarket?
What kind of oil and Filters are all you using?

Its not a good idea to switch from full synthetic back to regular oil, and if you have been using regular oil for quite some time its not such a good idea to switch to synthetic because its a thinner oil and you may find some leaks you didnt know you had before. If you had synthetic in there before you need to stick with that. I am currently using Pensoil 10w30 with the oem filter. I have had the regular oil in there too long to switch over so im just sticking with that.

i use Mobil1 10w-30 (warmer climate) and Mazda OEM filters. nothing wrong with it. where are you located? if you climate reaches freezing temps regularly, then get the 5W-30. If you live in a warmer climate, 10W-30 will work fine. you won't notice much of a difference anyways.

I use Mobil-1 and the OEM Filter.
I switched from Regular Oil to full synthetic at 100,000kms. No problems so far...and I would doubt there would be any problems.
In my opinion, brand of oil won't really matter. Just keep up with the oil change intervals and it should be fine...
and NO you won't get 'increased' power. I haven't 'dyno'ed it perse but its a common misconception. BUT GET THIS! The journeyman at the shop I work at told me he saw a thing where this guy replaces all of his fluids with synthetic (like Powersteering and shit) and he got an increase of a few whp. So who knows... but I wouldn't bank on it.

I think that i might just stay with the same oil and filter that i have from the dealer. i have no problem with the way things are running. but i would still like to try changing things up in a later time.

You cant go to long with regular oil and then switch to full synethetic.
you can always get a Purelator filter (model number I believe is PL14622......I use this filter....will check the model number in a few).....its listed for Mazda 626 and it fits on the protege as well....the only difference is that its a bit longer that regular oil filters that are listed for our cars.
as far as the oil....yea stick with whatever you have in your motor already....unless you just picked up your BRAND new pimpmobile from the dealer.......When I bought my car it had regular oil in it....1st oil change and all the consecutive ones up until this day I use Mobil 1 full synthetic.....one time 3 oil changes ago I switched to Castrol Syntec and I was burning it for some reason....and then I went back to Mobil again.
