Just a question for the people who have changed their trans fluid. What kind did you use? Just would like to know what everyone is running.

Auto or Manual transmission?

For auto, you can pretty much use any ATF rated for the car. In the past i've used Mobil1 Synthetic ATF and it did fine.

For Manual, most people do well with Redline MT90, GM Synchromesh, RoyalPurple 75W90, Motul 75w90, and others.

^^ what he said. But let it be known that synchromesh is pretty much just a fancy ATF that gm manual trannies are made to work with. Some people report awesomeness with it, others not so much. The Redline MT90 is good stuff. Royal Purple's synthetic oil isn't a true synthetic so I won't be using them anymore for my engine or gear oil. Mobil1 is also no longer a true synthetic with the reformulation. Redline is still a full synthetic though. I bought some from the Jegs web site, I think summit might carry it too though?

I will be running Redline MT-90 very soon...if I ever get the parts to finish my turbo build.

I use Amsoil's synthetic gear lube 75w-90 API GL-4 in my manual trans. Great stuff.

Cite your source, or this is BS - mobil 1 has never been anything other than a full synthetic.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd never use amsoil - it's hugely over-hyped and overpriced and I hate the spammy websites that sell the stuff.

Mobil1 FTW every time!

Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance-PAO based. Available in a variety of viscosity ranges. Keep in mind that current discussions about these oils indicate that mobil may have switched from a Group IV (PAO) to a Group III hydrocracked base stock meaning that Mobil 1 will no longer fit our definition of a true synthetic oil. If this proves to be the case, Mobil 1 will be removed from our list so keep this possibility in mind when selecting an oil.

I'll try to see who his source is for that info. I for one won't let Mobil anything (petrol, gear oil, motor oil) touch my vehicle because of their abhorrent environmental policies.

Hmmm - all I see there is lots of speculation and little scientific evidence, to be honest. The only people who know for sure what's going on is the manufacturer.

In any case, I think it boils down to exactly how "synthetic" is defined. It seems that mobil 1 can still claim to be fully synthetic by the accepted definition, but calling it 100% PAO is inaccurate.

But really, it's still (IMO) the most sensible choice based on price, performance and availability and who really cares if it's 60, 80 or 100% Group IV anyway?

good luck getting any manufacturer to actually let us know what's going on. With ExxonMobil's atrocious track record of environmental policies, shady tactics, and propaganda (read: paying scientists to say global warming is a total hoax), I don't trust them to lubricate my crank/rods/cams/etc. I have Royal Purple in my car (for EVERYTHING) right now even though I now know that they use hydrocracked basestock, but you won't see me buying that anymore either. I'll just use up the 3 bottles I have left (which will force me to buy another full bottle just to get a full oil change from it) and then I'm done. I bought a case of it and then read about their basestock and not being a true synthetic (though legally still a synthetic.. I don't care if it's legally synthetic or not, do you really think I trust the Gov't to tell me about my oil?) so I've been changing my oil every 3k miles or less (twice in a row I changed at 1k but that was because of my turbo install and break in process).

PAO = expensive, there seems to be no way around that. My main reason for using synthetic oil, above all, was to reduce my personal reliance on petroleum (yes, I would drive an electric car given the choice, as much as I love me an internal combustion engine), so hydrocracked oil does nothing for me. Even if Mobil1 with it's new SuperHydrocrackedBullsh*t (I'm sure they'll coin some "performance" term for it) performs better than say Redline (a true synthetic), I'll still use Redline and pay 8-9 dollars a quart for it.

This is all getting way off topic though. The original poster just wanted to know what people use. XxaltezzaxX, do yourself a favor and pick up some quarts of Redline MT90. You can get it at store.summitracing.com (at least I think you can) and they do free ground shipping. I haven't used Redline MT90 for the past few transmission flush/refill cycles, but then again I've been changing my gear oil every 3k miles for the past few times as well (for various reasons I've changed my gear oil maybe 6 times since October). I'm going to be ordering up a bunch of Redline MT90 and Redline motor oil so my car can be uber awesome and synthetically lubricated when I get it back from the body shop.

Thanks for all the replies, just wanted to know what everyone was running and their opinion on which gear oil they use. I won't be changing mine until May or June but all the info posted is a great help.

good question. Does store.summitracing.com ship to canada in a way that won't rape you on customs feeds (read: no UPS)?

Hey....

Thanks for the links....

I found one dealer pretty close to my place, but he has to order it in. THAT S**T AIN'T CHEAP! Does $16/quart sound right!?!?!?!?!? And I need 3 right?
Am I getting ripped off?

More like 8-9 a quart (in USD) sounds more like it.

Kansei, I think you have your units mixed up. If I recall correctly, it needs slightly less than 3 quarts. Regardless, it should be in the manual.

The price seems about right too. But really, what's $45 over 60,000* km or so.

* you could probably go longer with the synthetic if you wanted.

sorry, meant 8-9 dollars (USD) per quart. I know it doesn't need that many quarts, I've been changing my gear oil every 2k miles for the past few changes haha.
