My apex midpipe just broke. Both of the hangars snapped off right next to where they connect to the midpipe. It makes a hell of a noise now. It rattles against the cross brace underneath it i guess. Really freaked me out before i knew what it was. I dunno if i'll be able to fix it, and even if i do it'll prolly break again..... i never thought about it before, but i realize now that the flex section is AFTER the hangars..... that makes no sense. Argh. I don't have any money to buy a replacement. I'm gonna put the stock midpipe back on after the engine cools down i guess. Although it would be fun to run open s-pipe..........

i always thought the apex midpipe was not a well made piece.... and stories like this confirm it. the flex section is too far from the J-pipe. and it doesn't have that transmission mounting bracket on the J-pipe either. i'm sure you can just weld the hangers back on.

yeah i hope so. My dad has an MGB meet/get together thing later this week at a guys shop. He mostly works on british cars but he will probably be equiped to fix it and if he's not i'm sure he knows who would do a good job with it. But yeah its a real crap design, but i had never really thought about that till now.

I'll try and get it fixed, and it'll probably last me for a while and maybe sometime next fall i can sell it and pick up a vibrant or something.

If you bought if from Apex I know that they will honor fixing it, well at least they used to. But if you bought if off another forum member like most of us do then you'll have to track down a buddy with a welder. I know when I bought 1 of the 3 off of here I had one that the pipe seperatred from the flange that goes to the factory s-pipe. I just took it to a local muffler shop and they hooked it up for me for free.

Best of luck with it and this is the first time I've heard of the hangers breaking though.

no shit?? i didn't remember that. Where exactly did yours break?? Both of mine broke right where they were connected to the midpipe. Not like the welds broke, but the metal rods themselves were snapped. Theres still a small section (about maybe an inch or so) left on the midpipe where the actual welds for both sides were at.

Oh and TheJohnny, unfortunately i did buy it used.

Mine broke at the flex pipe. I replaced that POS flex pipe with another one which was longer and better quality. Considering the cost of the pipe itself and the new flex hose section, I really wish that I would of had an exhaust shop fabricate a custom pipe.

That's unfortunate for that to happen to you. I was looking at a j-pipe back ApexR1 exhaust because of the way it looks (I like the under-axle look), but this definitely cans all plans of getting that exhaust.

just get a shop to fab up new ones, cant be that hard. all you need is something in the hangers and then weld it to the midpipe

Yeah I figured it was probably used, I never bought a new one either. It really shouldn't cost much to have it welded up, most shops will probably charge you $20 for what will take them probably 5 minutes.
