Well I have a problem. The engine has started to rattle in my 03 ms protege.. Had a compression test done and Mazda told me I was losing compression in cylinders 1 and 3. They recommend a new engine.. My warranty is up by the way.. Its a real faint rattle but its there. Ive had 5 diff mechanics look at it and most had no idea what it was but told me to get a new engine. So i have and am waiting for it. But what if the rattle doesnt go away?? What could it be?? No one has torn the engine down to see for themselves but have all recommended a new engine.. The mods I have on is a custom front mount and short ram intake. No boost controler. boosting at 4-6 psi...

rattle like shaking marbles in a can?

More like one marble in a can.. Let me further explain. It doesnt rattle all the time, just around 2500rpm and up to probably 4000rpm. Thats it. Never before or after.

what gas octane do you put in it?
Jeydm

93 octane. One guy said it might be spark knock or pre detonation and to add octane booster... Tried it and nothing.. I just hope its not top end problems...??

A rod bearing wouldn't likely stop making noise over a certain rpm, either. Got me stumped. You can check the compression yourself. Testers aren't expensive. Might want to verify what the dealer said.

What about a loose wrist pin??? If it were, would i still have to get a new engine?? Cylinder wall fucked???
