it is a piggyback that does come with a better than stock map, and is tuneable. it's expensive, Used I have seen for 500..new like 900.
actually ken has em new for 650:

The Unichip is a computer that electronically resides between your car’s ECU and engine, releasing 100 percent of an engine’s untapped power. Sold worldwide for more than a decade, the Unichip is a tested and proven engine performance product used on the street, racetrack, and in off-road applications.
A Unichip installation consists of a Unichip computer module, a Plug-n-Play (PnP) wiring harness, and a performance map dyno-tuned for a specific vehicle & its components. The Unichip is a solid-state computer measuring the size and weight of a MP3 player, using multiple high-speed processors to control engine tuning & performance.

lots of people run this without forged internals...just be wary that there have been good and bad experiences with this. the safest route is always forged with the fs engine...they just were'nt built to take much more than stock. Any kind of tuning brings up the forged solution but it's really up to you...a better map always helps also.

i've been running it since October 2005. no problems, it works great. Some of the MOCC (california club) guys have driven my car and commented on how smooth the power delivery was.
the people who seem to have forged internals are the ones that didn't have any EMS before (with boost turned up), blew their engine, and replaced the insides with forged goodies. but to answer your question, no, you don't need forged internals to run it.
there are tons of threads on the Unichip with alot more info. try searching for it.

The only problem I see with the unichip is you have to take it to a tuner.

No but you would get better results with it, I ran with all my mods and a stock ECU for a long time and I've got a lot of mods. I had CAI, CS S and J pipes, 3" test pipe and a 3" cat back, 8-10psi no problems (10psi not recomended for people without money).

hmm better wait till the waarranty runs out in dec 2008. im still putting on hard pipes, a bov(single set up) and the maf relocation this spring.... but im leaving the boost stock as i dont have TIME to swap or get an engine swapped..
my car will officlally become my not so daily driver on wednesday.. the new job i have will give me a fully tooled up service truck and i have to park it in my driveway everynight.. so basically i go to work with it and don,t use the MSP anymore.. that cars gonna roll 10000 milles a year from now on..(headbang)

Your tune is the most important part of your engine management...no matter if it is a Haltech, Unichip, MPi or AEM...if your tune sucks, your rods will go. hehehe. I have been running the Unichip tuned by JDM Sam for over a year at 10psi and pushing as much hp as some of the forged rod/piston guys...in this case my tune has given my power and reliability.
