Hi,

I posted this info on imazda and clubprotege.com and got no useful help. This site is my last resort. I bought a 1.5L Protege auto almost 2 weeks ago. The engine was misfiring and torque convertor wouldn't engage/disengage like it suppose to.

Codes are
P0335
P0300
P0302
P0304
P1000
P1170
P0740

I changed the leaky valve cover gasket, injectors, coil, oil and the sensor behind the distributor cap. Ran a can of sea foam through the engine. It is now running much better and firing all its cylinders! Cleared the codes 5 days ago and except for the P1000 that can't be cleared, no codes came back yet.

For the transmission, it was slightly over filled by maybe 1/4 qt and the color of the ATF was clear-brownish. I'm guess the ATF and filter was never changed. I dropped the pan, changed the filter, cleaned the pan, reassmebled everything and fill it with maybe 2.5qt of fresh walmart ATF. It didn't seems change the way the torque convertor behave.

Most of the time, from a dead stop to about 5mph, the car will slip out of the torque convertor in D. If I contiune to give it gas, the engine will rev to about 4000rpm and the torque convertor will slowly engage and the car will move forward slowly and then the car speed will catch up. No completely slipping out of torque convertor problem on 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear. Though, if I hold steady speed, the engine rev sometimes will varible by serveral hundred RPM. It seems to me the torque convertor is engaging/disengage randomly.

Though, transmission upshift and downshift perfectly fine.

So, this is how I am driving the car currently. I select to 1 from a dead stop, get the car moving above 10mph, then I let go the gas and put it in D and let it shift and hit the gas again. I don't put it back to 1 until I am at a complete stop.

If I torque brake in D, the torque converter will disengage and allow the engine to rev to like 3000rpm, I didn't take to to any higher rev. If I torque brake in 1, I can only rev to about 1800rpm.

So, my question is, what are the most likely cause for the torque convertor to engauge/disengage at random? I already read about P0740, http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=22488&stc=1&d=1171411132, don't have the tools to do line pressure test and I am willing to go to junkyard and buy a control valve to try out.

Thanks for your help.
