My ac/power steering belt has been squeaky. I looked at it and the belt had slipped over one tooth on the power steering pump. My mazda mechanic buddy came over and put it back on correctly for me. He was asking around at work and another tech told him that my power steering pump's bearings are probably going out causing a slight wobble. Anyone else had this problem with their MSP. It's not covered cuz my title is branded cuz of my mods. Eventhough this problem is completely unrelated. Are there aftermarket PS pumps available? Who else dealt with this issue? Thanks in advance, Joe m.

the ps pump must be the same as on any P5 or protege with an fd-de..

go to a scrap yard, they shouldn't be too pricey.

I can get a brand new factory one from the dealer for 215 which is usually 319 dollars from my friend who works there. We are gonna take the belt off tonight and try to see if the PS pump is wiggling at all.

I've seen this happen from time to time on other Proteges. I don't think it has anything to do with the bearings. Just keep an eye on it every time you are under the hood. All you need to fix it is a 14mm wrench.

You may also want to change your PS fluid every 30-50k miles. I checked mine recently @ 50k and it was literally darkdarkdarkdark purple. I saved the left over to eventually post pics on here. I might do that later when I have some more free time.

Yeah, fixing it is easy. I did that in two minutes. I'm just concerned that it slipped at all and want to know the cause. I took the belt off and the PS pump pulley had a little play and that seems a little unnecessary and cause for concern.

I've never seen one with noticable play in it, but I've never really paid much attention to it either. Most bearing will make a ton of racket before they fail so I don't pay them much attention until then. I'll check into that play. I have two Proteges in the driveway this week. I'll see what they feel like.,

it has happened to me once or twice....beraing sound normal...idon't think is a bearing problem more than a disalignement of the pulleys

For some reason, I noticed my ps pump was kind of unbolted and tilted about a week ago. I could feel a slight lack of steering feel when I would turn from left to right and back. The LONG support bolt had backed out somehow about 1". Would that cause a ps pump to go bad? I haven't noticed anything unusual since torqeing it back down

i dont think so, unless the tensioner bolt was really tight, nothing else culd hurt the bearing

Fuck it. I'm going to wait til it's totally f'ed til I replace it. I'm gonna order my EBC instead. Car has been perfect for nearly a week. Knock on wood.
