View Full Version : Spark plug install .. ??
So. For those of you that have changed out the spark plugs on your MSP .. How'd it go?
I'm gonna change to NGK spark plugs either Wednesday or Thursday, and I just wanted to check in advance to see if there's any quirks or weirdness in the install that I should plan for ahead of time. With our cars .. you never know! ;)

theyre just typical plugs...take the cover off, unplug the coils, take em out put the new ones in with the correct gapping. You'll have no prob!

Very easy job. You'll need an extension to reach down there. Make sure your spark plug socket has the rubber plug in it so the sparkplug will stay in place as you thread it in. Put some anti-sieze on the threads also. Might want to clean off the area around the boot before you pull them off if there is any debris around the area. I'm on my second set of NGK PZFR6F-11 stock number 3271. DO NOT GAP THESE PLUGS.

Torque wrench is optional; 11-16 ft/lbs (might want to aim for the lower side if you put on anti-seize)
Thanks for the tips so far! :D
One other question that didn't occur to me till just now .. What size sockets are used? And with the NGK plugs, are they in metric or US? I just wonder if I'm gonna need a set of both metric and US sockets for when I dive in.

It's a 5/8 spark plug socket
It's a 5/8 spark plug socket
Is that for the NGK plug? Or for the stock plug?
Or are both the stock plug and the NGK plug the same socket size?

all plugs are 5/8
for this car.. for my roommate's volvo it's a bigger size. Actually our plugs are metric IIRC, but the u.s. equivalent size is so close that it's fine?
But yeah rush.. it's mega easy, but very deep.. I use a 6" + 3" for extensions usually.
What NGKs are you getting? I am running the v-power copper ZFR6F-11, but I may need to move to the 7 heat range in the summer who knows.

.. I can't remember WTF I got. I know, I'm pathetic. But they're over at my parents' house, since that's where they're gonna be installed. So I can't look at the box to refresh my memory.
I'm old, haha.
Anyhoo, installing bright and early tomorrow morning -- hopefully before the snow starts. :)

if it has a white tip on the plug, then thats normal combustion. other then that, your burning something that shouldn't be burned lol.

use a bit of anti-seize on the threads. also, i find that the spark plugs sometime stick to the boots of the wires. so spread some di-electric grease on the inside of the boot and even a little bit on the end (where it plugs into the boot). this will ensure that next time you won't have to struggle to get those plugs out.

Stock plug is an NGK as well. Don't forget to change your PCV valve if you have not already. The one for the 01 Milennia SC fits better in the grommet and its actually made for a boosted application. Purolator part PV 1047.

This is a simple job but boy have I seen people mess this one up. I've been called at all hrs of the day and night as people always seem to lose track of the wires. This car is almost idiot proff but still replace them one at a time, it'll help keep stuff out of the cylinders too.

What does a PCV valve do?
