Guys even thou i didn't read through the whole thread, it seems to me that people on the VW forum is putting us down(nothing new). We have to stand up to these guys and put our foot down and tell them who is right. They may be right about some things but not all. Lets throw one back at them for fun.

heh. yea i hear ya. i'm not gonna lie, it's a very nice car. i can't believe i'm driving it most of the time. it's one of those cars that no matter what speed you're driving at, it's extremely enjoyable. i was parked infront of a 7-11 last night for like 20 minutes and it was still fun. the complete silence at all speeds and the ease of mind, knowing that there's a very small chance that something might go wrong, is probably the best thing about it. the cops don't even look my way half the time now. and i aint gonna complain about girls looking over and smiling. and this is just a 3 series, i can't imagine what the higher models are like. it's definitely a beautiful machine. okay, i'm done bragging now.

Not all vw/audi guys are douches.. but all vwvortex guys sure are. They think their cars are so ultra european, the perfect car evAR, but meanwhile vdub gets horrible reliability scores.. overpriced crap if you ask me.
If I had 22k, I'd definitely get the MS3 over the GTI. The MS3 @ 22k would kick the ass of a GTI@22k.. plaid seats anymore? (doh)
that being said I wouldn't buy either car because I'm not at all sold on FWD.

VWhat? Seriously though, VWs aren't all that bad, they're just overpriced IMO. When I sat in the GTI at the Chi. auto show last year, I was impressed. But when I priced one out, I started thinking WTF? Since when did VW think ppl would start paying for the name? I have yet to race anyone and I honestly don't think anyone around me knows what the wild child can really do. But I'm now past the 600 mile mark on the odo so let the games begin!!!

Why? It's not like you are going to really achieve any sort of gain with the hood closed and some weak fans on.

What? If anything it's an advantage..Heat rising into open air as opposed to a hood..Those numbers are about par for the course compared to everyone else's dyno numbers. Especially since Automobile Magazine is a bunch of chuckleheads.

but no air flowing into the TMIC.. at all.
Hambino

Uh..what? The hood is open. The only air that would be coming from anywhere would be from the ambient fans. If anything, the hood closed would restrict air to the TMIC given the fact there is no way for air to even get there without momentum.
Kansei
02-06-2007, 12:43 AM
any air blowing at the front of the car.. with the hood closed, would be routed to the TMIC. With the hood open, 0 will get to the TMIC. yeah it might make a minimal difference but why not make the dyno test optimal?
Kansei
02-06-2007, 12:45 AM
case in point: when a wrx without a FMIC gets dynoed by anyone who knows what they're doing, they put a fan right over the TMIC to simulate the real airflow it would get at speed..
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_JQd1JG6AFE
dyno testing a MS3 with the hood open is 99% like removing it's intercooler entirely.. I sure as hell wouldn't dyno my car with the intercooler removed, no way.
Hambino
02-06-2007, 12:55 AM
Chris you are reaching. Simulating air flow at what speed? They are just randomly putting a fan on it for the principle. Does it make a difference, maybe, but if anything, thats an unfair advantage. Bottomline, to accurately simulate airflow at real speed, it takes a LOT more than that.
And for the record, I've never seen anyone from XX-tuning or any other dyno operator stuff a fan on top of a TMIC. Just your regular front located dual fan set-up.
Like I said earlier, the difference between the small airflow it would get from an ambient fan with the hood closed is probably equates to having the hood open and allowing the TMIC to vent to open air. We're arguing a moot point here.

I drove both and obviously I went with the better of the two cars... Otherwise, I'd look like one of the jackasses on their forum... VW is a fad, some yeas its good, others it sucks... Look at Mazda, putting out serious cars all the time (RX7, Miataspeed, RX8, Mazdaspeed6, Mazdaspeed3). All in all, you can't compare the snobby look of a VW to the look of a monster of a car like a MS3...
How can they even compare the two cars performance wise? The GTI is being compared to cars like the Civic SI and Tiburon, whereas our car is being compared to the big dogs like the WRX and even the EVO and STI...
I say fuck them and their nicht Deutsch sprecken azel's (my German is rusty).

I traded my Very reliable VW after 7 years of service. I had a few issues , MAF, Dash cluster, and last feb VW had to replace the motor (timing chain broke) . I loved the car. it was truely a mistake to get rid of the car. It had a new motor clutch and never gave me trouble, but i got bored with the car.
My wife and i went gave the new VW a good chance. She drove both the MS3 and a new 4 door GTI (6 speed and DSG). We both agreed the DSG is to boring to drive and the 6 speed car wasn't much different. Also for a simliar packaged VW ,was going to have to pay 1500.00 more for the car over an MS3.
I even have a good buddy at the dealership and was going to cut me a good deal, but in the end i told him, and the sales manager, that the New GTI was boring. My wife doesn't care about cars but when she makes a comment that the MS3 was more fun to drive and seem to handle better for her, her comment has some weight. I had made up my mind that the MS3 was the car for me, but i let her tell me what she thought of the 2 cars. we drove them the same day back to back.
I like VW. i blessed to not have alot of eletrical issues and as hard as i was on the car i was surprised it lasted as long as it did.
in the end people will say what ever they believe is correct regardless of hard data.

No bashing in any way? They plainly just come out and say crap like "yeah but it's a mazda" or "yeah, but can you live with yourself owning a mazda", negative comparisons tying Mazda and Hyundai together, etc.
I sat in a nicely loaded (29k dollar) GTI (before the MS3 came out, last summer) and yeah.. I like the interior, but it's too plain for me. It's just a vast expanse of soft-touch black. Plus, the soft-touch stuff brings back horrible memories of the 95-97ish gen Passat door handles with crap flaking off. The 3's interior is much more modern, stylish, and elegant, a real standout in an economy car class (remember, the 3 starts at like 12k dollars, much less than the basest of base-model rabbits). The materials of the GTI felt nice, but they felt nice in the 3 too.
Yeah I'm a Mazda guy, but I'm not very biased because I don't like the Mazda3 (specifically the hatchback.. love the sedan), and I do like the GTI (hate the jetta though.. exterior styling in the rear is awful). The MS3 outclasses the GTI in terms of performance quite easily. Funny that it does it for less money too. The MZR 2.3 is a proven strong engine, even in the non direct injection form found in the Mazda5,6,3. People have made ricidulous power on stock engine internals, and the MS3 has forged rods and I believe forged pistons too. Plus, the DISI system gives them better detonation resistance. The shortcomings I see of the 3 are that it's hefty (3300 pounds.. crap my P5 is 2716 pounds, the 3 is a fatty) and probably less nimble than the GTI (assuming the GTI isn't hefty as well, I haven't driven one). The other concern is putting all that power through the front wheels, how was that a good idea? This all saddens me because I think Mazda strayed too far from Kansei Engineering and just tried to grab at the "boy-racer" SRT-4 kiddies.
In the end, they are both great cars. The GTI has questionable reliability, but cleaner, more subtle/mature styling. The MS3 will likely be rock-solid reliable like the 3 it shares 90+% of it's parts with, but strays too far from Mazda's typical agility and balanced driving dynamics. If you're a euro nut, the 3's interior is likely too loud for you.
Honestly I would probably choose the GTI, but I can't stand the plaid seats and I hate leather.. so I'd bail on both choices and probably just get a Mazdaspeed6 or something haha.

Chris actually the 3 starts at 14390 and the rabbit at 14990 :p, but anyhow....
this whole thread is pretty rediculous. back up to 10 years ago, and myself and a couple hundred people had a pretty great time talking everyday about the vw brand, and even had forum-wide meets in texas and other states that we all attended and had a blast. at some point the "scene" over there exploded, the name was sold to larger media enterprises, and the whole forum is entirely overexposed now. the same thing could happen on a forum like this. the amount of douchbaggery over there IS phenomenal, but I've seen PLENTY here too. we really can't be making fun of their members "tire-stretching" threads- that represents only certain member's styles. Would you want the vortex members to start a thread bashing Mazda Forum's underbody neon threads? It's the same thing. Why worry about what others talk about in their own group? It seems like a waste of time and energy/worry.

OK I see the genius in you buddy...Just relax man, don't get all bent out of shape because you interpreted the whole thread completely WRONG...VWvortex.com are making remarks about a car that they don't have, I felt I should hear what you guys have to say in relate to what they assume...Instead of VW commenting on why people SHOULDN'T get the MS3 over the GTI, it ought to be why people SHOULD get the MS3 over the GTI...I know other forums have a different perception toward other things because of biases reason, but comparing a car by its flawlessness vs. imperfection is not the way to determine what car to purchase.

Funny but I do feel that way too. I love the heck out of my P5 (part of the reason I did not trade it in), the size and feel of the car. After buying the MS3 I could not, and still can't get over how big it feels. I parked the P5 (lowered on H&R springs 1.3") next to a lowered 3 ( don't recall his drop) and the P5 has a lower overall height. That 3 is about an inch or so lower than my MS3.
Daily driver will be my P5 for a long time. I do like the MS3 though but it would be cooler in a sedan. You guys getting this at Mazda??

(iagree) vw's are slower than madzdaspeed3 stock....vw's are nice cars and they have extremely high potential and ive seen many that are very fuckn fast and would walk all over my ms3...never been in one or driven one so i cant say the inside is ugly...im not a big fan of the new body style but it all comes down to the persons interest and what he or she likes....
