In just a few days, Saturn will publicly unveil the 2008 Saturn Astra, the rebadged Opel that will be imported from Europe to replace the bizarre-looking Ion. In other markets, the Astra is available in a variety of body styles ranging from a four-door notchback sedan to a slick, sporty hardtop coupe/convertible. This is the part where we eat crow for predictingAside from the obvious Saturn grille and markings, there's no visual difference between the Saturn version and its Opel twin. This is a good thing, because Astra's looks were never an issue. The 3-door XR with its optional 18" rims is particularly appealing to our eyes, though the practical 5-door shod in 17s is no slouch either (and will surely be a tempting morsel for buyers who have kids, dogs, carpool, etc.).

Inside, the full Euro interior is carried over, which makes for some interesting differences in that the GM corporate radio we're accustomed to seeing is replaced with the Opel unit. From the looks of things, the same tabbed display setup is carried over, only with a larger screen that's mounted high on the dash separate from the radio itself. The instrument cluster is attractive and well-organized, dominated by a large speedo and tach. The 3-spoke steering wheel is unique to Astra. The enclosed presskit photo shows the interior done in all grey, which truthfully makes it look really bland. We'd probably choose a lighter color if we were doing the buying.

In terms of amenities, there are many to choose from, including a two-panel sunroof for the 5-door, heated cloth or leather seats, 6 or 7-speaker audio systems, and wheel-mounted radio controls on the XR cars. A full complement of six airbags comes standard, too. We're looking very forward to getting up close and personal with the Astra at Chicago, and we'll bring you firsthand touch 'n feel impressions from the show floor as soon as the cars make their big debut.

We'll say this right now, though: the Ion won't be missed one bit.

PRESS RELEASE:

ALL-NEW 2008 SATURN ASTRA BRINGS AWARD-WINNING EUROPEAN SMALL CAR TO NORTH AMERICA

CHICAGO – Saturn announced the addition of the all-new 2008 Astra to its lineup, bringing a decidedly European flavor to the North American compact car market. It is packed with a wide range of standard equipment and safety features, and delivers sporty performance with very good fuel economy.
The Saturn Astra will be offered in three-door and five-door models, each underpinned by a taught, European-bred suspension that delivers a sharp, responsive driving experience. Power comes from a 1.8L Ecotec four-cylinder engine that is both energetic and economical, delivering 140 horsepower (104 kW) and good fuel economy.

"In Europe, the Astra's combination of style, performance, safety technology and fuel efficiency have made it a hit with owners and auto critics alike," said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn general manager. "Now, Saturn is bringing the newly restyled Astra to North America and marrying it with our celebrated customer experience."

The Astra will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. It is the fifth product in a complete revamp of Saturn's product lineup. In fact, when the Astra hits showrooms, the "oldest" vehicle in Saturn's portfolio will be the Sky roadster, which debuted in March 2006. Other new models include the all-new Aura sedan, the redesigned Vue compact crossover – including the Vue Green Line hybrid – and the Outlook crossover.

"It's not a stretch to say Saturn is all-new," said Lajdziak. "The Astra rounds out our portfolio with a smart-driving, well-equipped small car that shares the European designs evident in all our new vehicles."

Product highlights

Saturn offers two trim levels (XE and XR) for five-door models, and a single trim (XR) in the three-door configuration, which was created with more enthusiastic drivers in mind.
The standard powertrain combination in all models is the 1.8L Ecotec DOHC four-cylinder engine, which is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The Ecotec engine is enhanced with variable valve timing to optimize power output and fuel efficiency. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on all models.
The Astra offers technologies to provide an agile, yet comfortable, driving experience. StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control is standard on all three-door Astras, and available on five-door models. This system works in concert with the standard four-wheel, antilock disc brakes to help the driver maintain control during adverse road conditions or during sudden emergency driving situations.

An electro-hydraulic, rack-and-pinion steering system is standard on all models. It provides the solid, linear feel of a hydraulic power steering system, but improves fuel efficiency by operating the power steering pump only when necessary. The system has two available configurations: the standard 15:1 ratio on five-door models and a 14:1 Sport ratio (standard on the three-door; optional on five-doors).
Five-door Astras come with standard 16-inch wheels, but can be upgraded to 17-inch aluminum wheels. Three-door models come standard with 17-inch aluminum wheels, which can be upgraded to 18-inch aluminum wheels and performance tires.

Design details

The Astra has a clean, contemporary design that is infused with Saturn's signature styling cues, including a bold, bright grille bar with prominent Saturn logo. Both the three-door and five-door models are distinguished from their European relatives with unique front and rear fascias that conform to North American bumper standards.
Rear-end styling also features a bright trim bar, with large, wraparound taillamps and clear lenses. The center high-mounted stop lamp uses LED technology for fast and crisp illumination.
Proportions on both body styles suggest an enthusiastic driving experience, with the wheels pushed to the corners and subtle fender flares wrapped tightly around the tires for a tailored stance.
Interior design and features
Bold design, refinement and precise execution are the hallmarks of the Saturn Astra's interior, which envelops passengers in a contemporary environment that maximizes space and comfort. Details include a continuation of the exterior's center hood crease on to the center of the instrument panel, as well as a V-shaped center stack motif that also complements the design language of the exterior.
All models convey the Astra's sporting character through firm, well-supported seats and a thick, three-spoke steering wheel with rake and telescopic adjustments. Ahead of the steering wheel is a rounded cockpit binnacle that houses a large, three-dimensional gauge cluster – including large speedometer and tachometer dials. The sporty Astra three-door receives specific seats with more aggressive bolsters and lumbar support.

Additional interior highlights include:
• Illuminated glove box with damped door actuation
• A large, two-panel sunroof: the largest in its class (available on five-door only)
• Available heated seats in cloth or leather surfaces
• Auxiliary 12-volt power outlet
• Easy-to-remove rear cargo cover
• Power door locks (with central locking feature) and power windows with express down feature
• Standard six-speaker AM/FM/CD radio and available seven-speaker sound system; multi-disc and MP3-capable radios available
• Steering-wheel mounted audio controls (on XR models)
Astra's bold proportions, including a long, 103-inch (2,614 mm) wheelbase and 80-inch (2,033 mm) width, provide exceptional roominess and generous storage capacity. The 60/40-split folding rear seat also folds flat with the touch of a single, high-mounted lever. When the rear seat is folded, the five-door Astra offers 44.8 cubic feet (1,270 L) of storage space.
Occupant protection features
The 2008 Saturn Astra features a comprehensive list of safety systems to help protect occupants in the event of a crash. Highlights include:
• Rigid body structure with safety cage
• Six standard air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags; roof rail head curtain air bags and thorax/pelvic air bags (front-seat passengers)
• Active head restraints
• Collapsible pedals
• Front safety belt pretensioners and load limiters
• OnStar with one year of Safe & Sound service

Body structure: The unitized body structure is designed with a safety cage around the passenger compartment, and features optimized front and rear crush zones that absorb energy and help maintain the structural integrity of the passenger compartment. High-strength steel is used strategically throughout the body structure.

Air bags: All Astra models feature dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted thorax/pelvic air bags to help protect front occupants and head curtain air bags for front- and rear-seat occupants. Also standard is an automatic passenger sensing system for the front passenger seat; it suppresses the activation of the passenger-side frontal air bag if it detects a child or smaller-stature person in that seating position.
Active head restraints and collapsible pedals: Standard active head restraints instantly move forward if a rear-end crash is detected, reducing the risk of neck injuries. Similarly, the collapsible foot pedals move during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries.
Safety belt pretensioners and load limiters: When a crash is detected, the safety belt pretensioners immediately reduce the slack in the front safety belts, helping limit the movement of passengers. The load limiters permit a small amount of movement in the front safety belts, thereby reducing peak chest loads in a more severe crash.

OnStar: Astra comes with the latest-generation OnStar system, including available Turn-by-Turn Navigation. The system also includes advanced automatic crash notification (AACN). With AACN, an OnStar advisor is immediately contacted by the vehicle when a crash occurs; the advisor can determine the appropriate emergency help required and assist in sending it to the scene of the crash. Astra buyers will receive one year of Safe & Sound Service provided by Saturn.<!-- google_ad_section_end --> that GM would send over the notchback, because instead, they've chosen to send a pair of hatchbacks ( 3- and 5-door) to launch the model here in the States. The cars will target formidable competitors like the Mazda3 and VW Rabbit.

Saturn's new trim-level nomenclature is employed, with base XE and topline XR versions for the 5-door. The 3-door will be an XR-only vehicle. All Astras receive a 140-horsepower 1.8L Ecotec four-cylinder underhood, which is mated to a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy numbers aren't available yet, but should come out as the vehicle gets closer to production.

turns out that the Astra isn't the only thing GM's Saturn division has up its sleeve for this week's big Windy City show. Visitors to McCormick Place will also get their first eyefuls of the 2008 Vue's performance and hybrid variants.

The '08 Vue Red Line (above) gets a "performance-inspired" new look that's bound to have people talking (that may not necessarily be a good thing). The Red Line's front end is dominated by an enormous air opening below the front bumper, which is bookended by big secondary cutouts that house projector-beam foglights. The center cutout is so large, you'd expect to see an intercooler hiding behind it. Don't look for any forced induction here, though. The Vue Red line has the same powertrain as the Vue XR: GM's 250-horsepower 3.6L VVT V6 matched with a six-speed automatic with a manual-shift mode. Buyers can order it with either FWD or AWD.

The rear end of the Vue Red Line is differentiated from its siblings by a black bumper insert that houses chromed rectangular exhaust outlets. The car sits on a lowered sports suspension and rolls along on 18" five-spoke wheels. An exclusive interior color and requisite Red Line trim elements round out the changes. The Red Line will go on sale sometime in Q3 2007.
Also making its debut at Chicago is the 2008 Vue Green Line hybrid, which is powered by the same Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) light hybrid system used in the outgoing 2007 Vue Green Line. (You can read our full review of the '07 Green Line (http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/01/28/in-the-autobloggreen-garage-2007-saturn-vue-green-line/) over at AutoblogGreen.) The system combines a 170-horsepower 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder with an electric motor/generator that's powered by a 36V battery. The motor provides added boost on acceleration under certain conditions, and primary fuel savings are achieved via a stop/start system that kills the engine when idling. The onboard generator powers the car's accessories when the engine is shut off, and the battery is recharged by the gas engine (under optimal conditions) and through regenerative braking. Visually, the Green Line is set apart by unique wheels, Green Line and Hybrid badging, and a deleted roof rack.

The Green Line goes on sale in Q4 2007. A stingier 2 Mode hybrid version is slated to arrive in Q3 2008.

AutoblogGreen will provide full 2008 Vue Green Line coverage from Chicago later this week

PRESS RELEASE:
SATURN DEBUTS 2008 VUE RED LINE AND GREEN LINE HYBRID
Specialized Models Provide Bold Looks, Performance Tuning, Fuel Savings and Value

CHICAGO – Saturn announced two new variants of the completely redesigned 2008 Vue crossover utility at the Chicago Auto Show: the performance-tuned Red Line and the affordable, fuel-saving Green Line hybrid.

The Red Line builds on the new Vue's bold styling with an aggressive front-end design, including a large, lower air opening and projector beam fog lamps. The rear of the vehicle features a special fascia, spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. A lowered suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and Red Line badges complete the performance-inspired appearance.

From a performance perspective, the Red Line comes with standard tap up/tap down transmission control and sport-tuned ride and handling. It is powered by a dual overhead cam 3.6L V-6 VVT engine that delivers 250 horsepower (186 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. (329 Nm) of torque at 4,400 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Vue Red Line will be available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Interior modifications include a Red Line-only Ebony interior, including black leather sport seats with suede fabric inserts. The vehicle also features Red Line-logo instrument cluster graphics and embroidered floor mats.

Green Line hybrid

The 2008 Vue Green Line hybrid will continue to provide consumers with an affordable hybrid that also provides uncompromised utility.

The hybrid system on the Vue Green Line combines sophisticated controls with an electric motor/generator mated to a 2.4L four-cylinder engine and a modified four-speed automatic transmission. The system saves fuel by providing an electric power assist during acceleration; shutting off the engine at idle; early fuel cut-off during deceleration and capturing electrical energy through regenerative braking. Fuel economy figures for the 2008 Vue will be announced later.

The 2008 Vue was first shown last November at the Greater Los Angeles International Auto Show, as an uplevel XR model. At the show, Saturn also announced it will offer a version of the Vue Green Line with GM's new two-mode hybrid system, in the third quarter of 2008 . This system will provide a 45-percent improvement in fuel economy compared to its non-hybrid counterpart.

Additionally, General Motors committed to producing a plug-in version of the Vue Green Line that will double the fuel economy performance of any SUV currently on the market. No date has been set for the introduction of the plug-in hybrid, but it is a top priority for the company.

The Vue XR (and base-level XE) will arrive at Saturn retailers this spring. The Vue Red Line will arrive in the third quarter of 2007 and the Vue Green Line hybrid will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2007.

All-new Vue

All 2008 Vue models feature the Saturn's new design cues and European-inspired performance characteristics. Standard equipment highlights include:

MacPherson strut independent front suspension with stabilizer bar
Independent multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar
Double-isolated engine cradle \
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS
GM StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing system
Traction control
Hydraulically assisted power steering on V-6 models
Dual-stage frontal air bags, front-seat side thorax air bags and head curtain air bags covering front and rear rows
Front-row safety belt pretensioners
Collapsible pedals
Active head restraints
OnStar with one year Safe & Sound serviceThe 2008 Vue Saturn joins the Sky roadster, Aura sedan and the Outlook crossover utility in the revitalized Saturn portfolio. Saturn also introduced the 2008 Astra small car at the Chicago show.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship

What is it?
2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship

What's special about it?
Listen, we know Ron Fellows. We've worked with Ron Fellows. Well, we've at least talked to him on several occasions. He's a nice man and a Canadian. And he is a damn fine racecar driver.

Fellows has been instrumental in the success that the Corvette has had in sports-car racing since the team had its first win with the C5-R in 2000, and he has been the lead driver for the team as it's won six consecutive manufacturer titles in the American Le Mans series.

But it's hard to say what Ron Fellows has to do with a special-edition Arctic White Z06 with his name on it.

The Fellows edition comes with front fender graphics that Chevy says are reminiscent of the graphics from the C5-R racecar (which itself is yellow). The red and silver stripes bear Fellows' autograph along with callouts for the championship years when he was at the wheel. Proud Canadian that Fellows is, a red maple leaf is incorporated into the graphics. The Fellows edition also gets a full width racing spoiler, a windshield banner and chrome wheels.

The interior is very red.

Some 399 examples of the Fellows Corvette will be built, and sales begin this spring.

2007 Chevrolet Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica Convertible

What is it?
2007 Chevrolet Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica Convertible

What's special about it?
The editor in chief of a Corvette magazine once told us that his greatest fear was getting stuck in an elevator with one of the readers of his magazine. So fanatically devoted were his readers to their beloved Vette that they actually frightened him.

It is for exactly this kind of Vette guy that Chevy has created the 2007 Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica. Corvette collectors love their special editions and the Corvette's turn pacing this year's Indy 500 provides a good excuse for Chevy to go gin one up.

There is nothing new mechanically about the pace car. It will be a convertible, of course, since the actual pace car is a convertible. It will use the same 400-horsepower LS2 V8 as the standard Corvette and will be available with the familiar six-speed manual and six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmissions. It will come with the Z51 performance package, which includes a stiffer suspension tune and cross-drilled brake rotors.

Some 500 Indy replicas will be built, and they will go on sale this spring. As Chevrolet tells us, they will carry "gold-ribbon graphics that flow outward from the front fender vents" and "Indianapolis 500" door logos over Atomic Orange paint. There are Indianapolis 500 badges on the fenders and embroidered Indianapolis 500 logos on the black seats. The deal is rounded out by split-spoke wheels, a Z06 rear spoiler and orange interior pieces and engine covers.

It seems almost incidental that a Corvette will actually pace the Indianapolis 500 on May 27, 2007. This will be the ninth year (and the fourth consecutive year) that a Corvette has paced the race. The last pace-car replica of a Corvette came in 1998, and it was purple with bright yellow wheels and seats. People lined up to buy it, which should tell you everything you need to know about the depth of enthusiasm for commemorative-edition Corvettes.

Totally agree. That Astra is actually pretty nice, but I still don't know how I'd feel about owning a Saturn. New lineup is a step in the right direction for sure.

Hopefully the production quality has risen. My brother owned a Saturn back in the day... Horribly unreliable.

Ummm, heck no! The G8 looks like a beefy, RWD, 6.0L V8 powered, slick interiored American sport sedan! Its about time. To compare it with an 04 civic is the be Automotively BLIND! If anything it looks a little bit like an americanized Acura TL TypeS (except is RWD as opposed to the TL being FWD look at the pics then get back to me! Its a Holden badge job, but a good one!

Scion xD and xB info

In a move that can only be deemed as stupid, lazy or incredibly devious, Car & Driver published images and information on Scion's redesigned xB and all-new xD more than a day and a half before the car's are scheduled to be debuted here in Chicago. The info went live last night but wasn't discovered until an industrious member of the ScionLife forum messed with the URL and found it.

First up is the new xB, which has grown in size thanks to leaving the platform it shared with the now defunct xA. Gone is the toaster-esque styling as well, replaced with a design that's still a box, though one with fender flares, a little more character in the front end and a thick C/D-pillar. It's also reported that the interior has been upgraded along with losing the not-loved center-mounted gauge pod. The xB will also share its powerplant with the tC now, which means a 2.4L four-cylinder generating 158 hp and 162 ft-lbs. of torque will be on tap to send power through a five-speed manual or four-seed automatic.

The xD is the new kid in the Scion camp, replacing the less well-received xA. It rides on the same platform as the Yaris, but is powered by the 128-hp, 1.8L four-cylinder found in the Corolla and Matrix. The xD will feature the same transmission choices as the new xB and send power to the front wheels only. The xD's styling shares the same thick C/D-pillar seen on the new xB, which appears to be a new Scion trademark styling cue. We'll leave judgment of the car's overall design to you, but will just say that it looks like a cross between a Camry and a JDM-market Mazda Verisa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Verisa).

2008 Toyota Highlander

Built on the same platform as the Camry sedan, the original Toyota Highlander SUV was doomed to dullness from the beginning, wedged squarely between the homely wagon and the dreaded minivan.

Apparently this hasn't bothered Toyota, as the fully redesigned 2008 Highlander pursues the same look of mainstream American suburbia as before. It looks like a RAV4 with meaner headlights and a bigger roof rack.

It's still a sport-ute designed for families who don't want a minivan, yet many of the Highlander's features are straight out of the minivan playbook.

Take the second-row captain's chairs with a removable center section. This "Center Stow" seat turns the second row into a three-passenger bench seat. When you don't need it, you can fold it flat into the floor, leaving an aisle for access to the third-row seats. You know, like a minivan.

Safety is also one of this Highlander's calling cards. All models will come standard with seven airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver and side curtain airbags for all three rows. Traction control, antilock brakes and stability control are also part of the package.

The 2008 Toyota Highlander is slightly bigger than before, 3 inches wider and with a wheelbase stretched by 3 inches.

Only one engine will be offered: a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 270 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. Hooked to a five-speed automatic transmission, Toyota says the new V6 will deliver nearly the same fuel economy as its predecessor. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive remains an option.

A 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid will join the lineup two months after the standard model's debut in July. Net output for the all-wheel-drive gas-electric drivetrain will be 270 hp. Despite 500 pounds of additional weight, the Highlander Hybrid will achieve the same 31 mpg city and 27 highway as it did before.

Standard Highlanders will come in three trim levels. Although Toyota claims all Highlanders will be well-equipped, most of the minivanlike options will remain on the options list. Notable features include a power liftgate, keyless ignition, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and three-row climate control.

With the introduction of the 2007 Kia Rondo at the Los Angeles auto show last fall, Kia now has its own entry in the booming market for compact sport-utilities. The Kia Rondo SX is a concept vehicle intended to persuade us that the mini-ute has more than just family values in mind.

Built on the Kia Optima sedan platform, the Rondo is a spacious little item, even though it looks like a bar of soap that has been next to the sink for a little too long. The SX concept vehicle tries to add some visual interest to the package with more aggressive front and rear fascias, a more dramatic grille and some functional details.

Unlike most concept cars, the SX's trim pieces are available as production pieces as part of the Rondo's optional accessory body kit, including the deep front spoiler, fender flares and rocker sill extensions.

The SX rides on 18-inch cast-alloy wheels that carry 235/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires. There's more power going to the ground thanks to a cold-air intake and free-flowing cat-back exhaust system, which together increase the 2.7-liter V6's output some 10 horsepower to 192 hp. Meanwhile the brakes have been upgraded with cross-drilled rotors.

The Rondo SX also has a bit more visual interest inside, where the people live. Upgraded materials relieve the sameness of the stock furnishings for the Rondo. The driver gets to hold a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrasting red stitching, as well as sit in a seat upholstered in gray leather with red leather trim and dark gray suedelike inserts.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the return of its motorsports-inspired R32 at the Chicago Auto Show. First introduced in 2004 to an enthusiastic reception, the R32 delivers the ultimate in Volkswagen sports performance with dynamic handling and refined road manners.

The R32’s power comes from a 3.2 L naturally aspirated 15-degree narrow angle V6 engine. With 250 horsepower and 236 ft. lbs. of torque, the R32 is all muscle. The standard 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system transfers at least 75 percent of available torque to the rear wheels. Volkswagen’s acclaimed DSG® transmission allows for seamless gear changes and accelerates from 0-60 in approximately 6.4 seconds.

With a fully independent multi-link rear suspension that sits wider and lower than its GTI sibling, the R32 flaunts its authority both inside and out. Twin chrome exhausts, 18-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights, a uniquely shaped front grille and R32 badging distinguish this car from anything else on the road. A rear roof spoiler and deep front spoiler, coupled with body-colored bumpers, side bump strips, door handles and door mirrors, add to the streamlined, sporty look.

The R32 boasts a long list of safety features, including Electronic Stabilization Program that reacts to critical driving situations in milliseconds by controlling the speed of individual wheels; and a confidence-inspiring Anti-Lock Braking System that helps to prevent wheels from locking under heavy braking. Brake Assist boosts brake pressure in emergency braking situations and the state-of-the-art Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle's brakes based on road and driving conditions.

</SPAN><TABLE cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=0 width=600 align=bottom border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=arttext>http://www.thecarlounge.com/news/uploads/r32side.jpg</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Inside, the R32 takes it cues from racing with aluminum-look foot pedals and deep front sports seats. Features such as automatic climate control (Climatronic™), ten-speaker premium CD stereo system, rain sensing wipers, automatic dimming interior rear-view mirror, heatable front seats and heated washer nozzles, anti-theft alarm, cruise control and trip computer are standard luxuries that complement this performance-driven champ.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. anticipates significant consumer demand for its sporty new R32 performance model, debuting today at the Chicago Auto Show. The new R32 is a reprise of the 2004 edition, which sold out its entire United States allocation of 5,000 shortly after its market debut.

The new edition, limited to a quantity of 5,000, is expected to appeal to previous and current R32 enthusiasts, owners of the sporty GTI who are looking for “something more” and to the larger automotive enthusiast community. To satisfy those customers with the strongest R32 ownership aspirations, Volkswagen has established an order reservation process. Current GTI and R32 owners will be notified of the opening of an R32 micro-site on www.vw.com, concurrent with today’s introduction. An R32 prospect will complete a purchase interest form, thereby generating an R32 Certificate. The first 850 people who present an R32 Certificate along with a deposit to an authorized Volkswagen dealer, will be able to secure one of the first R32 vehicles to be delivered in August 2007.

<TABLE cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=0 width=600 align=bottom border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=arttext>http://www.thecarlounge.com/news/uploads/r32rear.jpg</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The R32 features an exclusive combination of high performance components, such as a narrow-angle 3.2L V6 producing 250 horsepower mated to a six speed dual clutch DSG transmission, with steering wheel mounted shift controls. It features a full compliment of comfort, convenience and performance features, as well as unique R32 interior and exterior design cues.

ok I take that back about the new scions.. the new xB does look pretty cool from a lot of angles, I still don't care for the interior though. Amazing what a drop and a nice wheel/tire package will do for the look of a car.

The proportions are so much nicer on the new xB, and it's over a foot longer so it actually has some utility now. cool!

The Dodge Viper's V10 might sound like a garbage truck at idle, but who cares when it delivers 600 horsepower with emissions certification and a warranty? Still, for some, that's just not enough power, and so the Mopar guys have come through with some parts to take the new McLaren-engineered 8.4L up to 650 HP. We're going to take a closer look at some of these components.

Extracting more power from a 2-valve pushrod engine that already makes nearly 75 HP/L is no easy feat. So how did the Mopar boys pull off this daunting task?

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/viper-8.4l-v10-(450)-3.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-dodge-viper-v10-8-4l/155142/)

One of the most striking features of the stand-mounted engine is the set of massive tubular headers.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/viper-8.4l-v10-(450)-4.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-dodge-viper-v10-8-4l/155143/)

The five individual equal-length primary tubes meet at a set of intermediate collectors, with air flow from the front three and rear two cylinders combining into larger-diameter secondaries before joining into the huge collectors. This is commonly refered to a a "tri-Y" design, and generally favors broad powerband instead of maximum peak horsepower.

A pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies, each with its own actuator, control airflow into the intake plenum. They look just about big enough to swallow a Cornish game hen. To achieve the hp increase over the stock engine, the incoming airflow is routed through a Mopar cold-air induction tract.

The intake manifold is said to be a "prototype" version of the production item, with a highly-polished upper half, and black powdercoat applied to the lower. From the outside, we can't see any obvious differences compared to the production item, but we wouldn't be surprised if the internal surfaces were massaged somewhat.

Black crinkle-finish valve covers and carbon-fiber fuel injector rail covers do nothing to improve power output, but they sure look menacing.

Also note that the massive oil pan ties into the bellhousing for maximum rigidity.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/viper-8.4l-v10-(450)-8.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-dodge-viper-v10-8-4l/155147/)

Note that the indirect (port) injector is now located in the cylinder head (unlike the older versions of the Viper V10 that placed the injector in the intake manifold). The exact reasons for doing this are unknown, but the change was obviously aimed at improving charge distribution across the rev range.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Those scions are possibly the ugliest cars toyota has yet to produce.. Did anyone else notice the phallic shifter in the xA replacement?

Continental auto safety - Active Passive Integration

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/apia_car_text_en.jpg

Modern cars are incorporating a variety of safety systems designed to help drivers avoid accidents and then, if an accident is unavoidable, to minimize the risk of injury. Until now, most of these have operated largely independently of each other, but Continental Automotive Systems (and its competitors) is trying to change that. At the Chicago Auto Show, Conti had a BMW 3-series equipped with its experimental Active Passive Integration Approach (APIA). APIA ties together the various safety systems to try and achieve a result greater than the sum of the parts.

Continental combined the radar inputs from the adaptive cruise control system and added a laser speed detector, the hydraulic control unit for the stability control, and then tied it all together with the air bag, seat belt tensioning, seat controls and window controls. The system detects the speed of the vehicle ahead and determines how fast you're closing in. The system has various stages of operation depending on how quickly you approach the vehicle in front of you. There's more about how the system works after the jump along with a video from Continental.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/img_1314.jpg

When the system detects that you're closing on the vehicle ahead too quickly, it initially provides feedback through the accelerator pedal by pushing back against the drivers foot. it also lightly pretensions the seatbelt. As the vehicle continues to close, the stability control hydraulics prefill the brake calipers with fluid, bringing the pads in closer to the brake rotor for quicker emergency response. It also closes the windows and sunroof to prevent passengers from being ejected. Next, the seat cushion is tilted up to prevent the front passengers from submarining under the seatbelts and the belts are tightened further. The airbag system is also prepared for deployment. Finally, the brake assist system engages to help apply the brakes more aggressively and slow the vehicle, and seat belts are pulled tight to minimize any injuries. Altogether, APIA uses every available safety system to maximize its overall effectiveness. Many mid to high-end vehicles already have almost all the necessary subsystems in place to provide this and it will mainly take some more control software to implement the solution.

Chicago Auto Show: 2008 VW GTI Cup

http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/image/2007/Q1/282007163424.jpg

Upping its sporting quotient, VW announced that it will sponsor a GTI Cup racing series in North America in 2008. And it announced that its sporty R32 model, of which only 5,000 will be produced, will be allocated through an order reservation process.
The Cup Series, which will be sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, will use stock GTI models with their 200-bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged fours mated to dual shift gate manuals that feature clutchless sequential shifting. Meanwhile, reservations for orders of the 250-bhp R32 will be taken through a proprietary website that current GTI and R32 owners will be given access to. The first 850 prospects who obtain certificates through the site will be allowed to place deposits on the R32 with authorized VW dealers. Deliveries of the R32 are expected to begin in August.
