2002 Dodge Razor RWD Concept

American motor industry insiders have today confirmed that Dodge is working on a rear-wheel-driven two-seater sports car to rival Mazda's MX-5. Only this week Autocar reported rumours that the company was keen on the idea of a compact two-seater; we've now learned that the car has already been shown to select motor industy media in the US, and is a dead cert for the Geneva motor show in March.

According to Autocar's sources, the new Dodge is "a carbon copy of the Mazda MX-5," and does indeed draw a few cues from the Dodge Razor concept of 2002. It will perfectly fit Dodge’s position as a performance brand in both the US and Europe, and will be a competitor for both the Mazda MX-5 and GM's award-winning Pontiac Solstice.

“The small sports car market is an ideal fit for Dodge," Chrysler Group design chief Trevor Creed told Autocar. "It’s a market relatively untapped by the big players, and I would think there are opportunities there - just watch this space.”

Chrysler CEO Tom La Sorda also thinks a small Dodge sports car is a good idea, although he’s concerned about formulating the right business case. “It’s something we should certainly look at,” said La Sorda, “but it has limited volume and there are other new segments where maybe the business case is better.”

Chrysler has had recent bad experience of the sports coupe market with the Crossfire; “It's tough,” said La Sorda. “I think the way for a small sports car to succeed is to set your volumes low, the lifecycles short and to make money. Then, if the volume and the lifecycle goes up, you make a lot more money.”

The Solstice (from what I hear) is actually a good performing car. But I don't think anything can touch the Miata. Too much history and performs well.

As far as looks, they are leaning more towards the Solstice look. The front ends look alike. I think the Solstice is actually a nice looking car..

...I want one.

this thing is ugly.

I actually like the Sky better than the solstice.

take that back...

Skys are nice though... although if the fit/finish is the same as the solstice, then no thanks. we had a used one @ the dealership. the guage bezel rattled, everything creaked, the cupholders broke and the top was a mess to put up or down... not to mention it leaks and theres no trunk space. I did like the seats though... very comfy seating positions..

Sky's have AWESOME body lines. Love the look of that car so much but due to it carrying the Saturn name around I wouldn't think about even driving it. They also haven't really advertised it (as far as I have seen). I've seen one Sky driving around and about 10 or so Solstices.

I will not take back me wanting a Solstice. If I don't stay true to Mazda's I will forever stay true to Roadsters. :)

The great thing about the MX-5 and Miatas in general is their lightweight and great agility. That's what sold me on the MX-5 over the Solstice after test driving both, it just feels every bit of the 400lbs lighter that it is through the curves and off the line.

I dunno, oranges are pretty good. At least its easier to make juice in the morning with oranges than with apples :p

I like that its a hard top. I always wanted Mazda to make a fixed top two seater compact sports coup. I'm bald as an egg and with the top down i would burn to a crisp. Plus it creates better rigidity and I like being "in" a car.

No thanks.

Auto makers have been trying to catch up with the Miata since the beginning. I doubt Dodge has anything to add to the mix other than more weight and more power which != a carbon copy of the miata.

i say "bring it on!!" if doge can keep in light and cheap, i don't think it will matter as much how much power its pushing. when they were showing the razor, they were talking $16,000-ish. if they can make it a roadster, and keep a similar price point, they should sell like hot-cakes.
