Carroll Shelby's very own 800-horsepower 1966 Shelby "Super Snake" Cobra has sold for $5.5 million at auction, a record for an American car.

A pair of bidders in a packed house to its feet Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction drove the price up. Shelby, who is now 84, tricked out the car with twin superchargers on a 427 cubic inch V8, and drove it for years.

“It’s a special car. It would do just over three seconds to 60, 40 years ago,” Shelby told the crowd.

There was also a second identical car, built for comedian Bill Cosby, which was destroyed in an accident while being driven by another owner. Barrett-Jackson said the $5.5 million selling price for the Cobra, while not an absolute world record, was a record price for American cars.

Car collector Ron Pratt was the winning bidder. He had previously paid $4.32 million for the Futureliner, one of the 12 futuristic auto show buses used by General Motors during the 1940s and 1950s.
