black is normal or turbo cars---CARBON build up, keep it under 100 mph clark :)

most turbo vehicles run richer than a standard NA car. There will be some carbon deposits on the exhaust tips because of this. Best thing todo is to just wipe it down every so often.

as far as the mileage... I could try to answer for you, but mileage has TOO many variables. Also keep in mind that winter blend gasoline will net you slightly less MPG. also if the vehicle is not broken in you will have lower than normal mileage.

Any good cleaning agent suggestion for the exhaust..?

i use chrome cleaners to wipe the edge of the exhaust tips....

Be careful - some of the chrome cleaners are too abrasive. Go to a performance car shop that sells aftermarket wheels, etc and ask for some good chrome cleaner. Some of the best products I've used are available in what they call "impregnated cotton." It's very effective and doesn't scratch the chrome.

Also, you could wax the tip (with standard carnuba wax) to prevent most of the black soot from sticking and also help with cleaning the next time. Im not sure though how long that wax would last. It works on wheels so it might work in this scenario.

the build up is getting pretty gross tho, and has ruined any towel/sponge etc that i have tried using. O well, they r just gonna stay black i guess. I have never seen anything like it tho in terms of exhaust residue these pipes r gross

yeah just use paper towels on it. My p5 had tons of carbon build-up there even before I turboed it.. it's normal for our cars for whatever reason.

Does Direct Injection have anything to do with it?. May be not, if u notice new Acura RLs, the plastic around the exhaust tip on a white RL is all black because of that stuff.

Who knows...my Dodge Ram Hemi has it too.

running pig rich has everything to do with it

The direct injection is more efficient, but the system as a whole is setup to run rich to allow a nice safe area for the car to run in all conditions. As mentioned before its just pig rich.

All of us who have the turbo engine will really testing their decision in a few years. I honestly wonder how long the cat will last with the rich condition. I know on my SVO the tune was a little too rich and well in a matter of months the cat turned into a solid brick. Caused all kinds of issues, one of which was loss of boost pressure.
