I'm a new owner of a Protege Speed and would like to know how the hesitation will effect the car. The car has a boost controller. Can Mazda fix it and is it free or does it have to be under warranty? How much will it cost if Mazda does not cover it? Will fixing effect the car?
Thanks, Lyndon

Welcome to the club. The search button is your friend, you'll find many threads on this. If you go to the dealer, take off the boost controller to avoid any warranty problems.

A mazda dealer won't fix it under factory warrenty if you have a boost controller. The dealer where you bought it from might fix it if you have a warrenty with them.

Thanks, Lyndon Explain what you mean by hesitation? I am guess you are reffering to what we all know as "fuel cut". You say it has a boost controller. If the weather where you are is cold... I am betting you are hitting fuel cut if you are boosting over 8 psi. If it is fuel cut, just turn your boost down a bit to about 6 or 7 psi and you should not get it, depending on how cold it is outside.

pyr0... uh... hello its a TSB for goodness sake!
the first MSP ECUs were programmed poorly.

the first MSP ECUs were programmed poorly. Yes I know this but that doesn't mean he is not talking about fuel cut, especially with a boost controller onboard... the guy is new.

I need to figure out if my MSP ecu is the newer flash or not. It feels like it bogs down between 2800 and 5300 rpms sometimes (not all the time).. it's like the turbo is spooling and I can hear the rush of air but.. it honestly feels slower than being out of boost even when it's floored sometimes.
And there's no way a dealership can help me .. not only is my car far from being under warranty still (79k miles) but it's not even an MSP! I just bought the ECU from ProtegeGarage because I basically have a modded MSP turbo setup (7-8psi).

I'm using a eBay manual one built by a guy who owns Lower Shores Performance. My turbo lag went away and I'm running right at 10 psi but I have heard other people with diferrent controllers having issues like this also. Just a thought.

Thats what happens with mine when it's cold out and i'm boosting at about 10. For some reason I cant turn the boost down. I tried three different boost controllers and it still boosts at 10. Im thinking maybe my wastegate?(dunno)

The boost controller that I am using is a PROCOMP guage boost controller and at 7psi and the car has 50K on it. The car hesitates and stumbles under acceleration when I step on the gas all the way. How much would it cost and would I still be able to have a boost controller on it or anything else without causing problems if I do fix it?
Thanks, Lyndon

I'm running a Turbosmart.. I could borrow my roommate's JoeP inline since he hasn't had time to install it yet.
It isn't a consistent problem though. When I drove to campus at 2 today it was hesistating, but driving back after class it wasn't. Then driving to campus for 6 it still wasn't hesistating.

Yes, I get it all the time. It drives me nuts and I have all supporting mods to fix this and boost safely. I just can't understand why the basterd hits fuel cut. I'm taking my Unichip in next monday and I'm hoping it can be tuned to correct for this.

I've noticed that it has ALOT to do with how cold it is outside. Where abouts do you live?? I notice that when's it's mild outside, my car pulls like a motha without "fuel cut". When it's cold outside, my car becomes a total bastered, it even wants to stall when I let off the gas to stop.

I'm in Rochester NY.. so like 3 hours from Toronto. I understand how the cold could have something to do with it, but at 2pm it did it and then it didn't at 3:45.. the temperature hadn't changed much if at all.

The hesitation only happens when the car is at full throttel. Do you guys know how much it cost to fix? Is it the ECU? Do you guys also have probels with the stock kenwood stereo?

If your car is under warranty it's free to fix. It's the ECU, and they'll fix it. Out of warranty I don't know how much it costs.

If its out of warrenty just buy the DSM AFC. Plug and play fix for cheap that will allow for tuning in the future.

I haven't heard back confirming that the DSM AFC will work around the problem. I wouldn't think it would.. even if I tuned around it with a custom map, it isn't a consistent problem :(
