ok, my buddies are ripping on me pretty good ever since I got my MP5. They keep telling me I bought a POS ford. Agreed, theres nothing worse than a Ford, but how much of Mazda does Ford actually own and what influnece? Is there any "ford" in the MP5? I know they team up on trucks (Ranger/B3000 and B4000) but their cars are completely seperate right?!!! Cuz I've driven a ford, and the MP5 is no d@mn ford...it handles far too well to be a ford...not to mention the fit and finish...100000x better than a ford...

first, not all fords are crap, i had a 91 escort that was very reliable, though i admit it didnt like going over 60mph.
ford owns a third of mazda, which under japanese laws gives them controlling stake in the company.
there is part sharing and the like for sure, but i dont think that ford got into mazda to mess with mazdas, i think its more like they got into mazda to tap into their ideas and have a japanese presence, and make $off the japanese reliability.

the motor from the p5 is a probe motor, but so far as i know thats the only ford in the p5. my dealer sticker said the p5 is 98% japanese. so my guess is the other 2% is ford. ford is mostly the money backing mazda. they also own jaguar, volvo, land rover, and aston martin. tell your friends that bit of info, and they should be off your back. if they think those bands are crap fords too, they know nothing about cars and you shouldnt take offense to anything they say.

Technically the motor in the Probe is a Mazda motor, IIRC. Same thing with the motor in the early '90s Escort. Mazda BP 1.8L. Basically the crappy ford cars were made tolerable by adding good Mazda motors.

Don't take this the wrong way but your friends are stupid :p. I helped my friend look for a new car recently, and she eventually decided on a protege. Anyway, she found this really nice P5 and she went and had a look, the idiot salesman asks her why she wants a mazda so bad and she tells him that she likes the car (styling, interior, etc.), she hasn't heard anything bad about it and that it's also japanese. Well as soon as the the salesman hears this he launches into a tyrade about how she doesn't know anything because mazda=ford and it's all built in america anyway, and how he's tired of everyone thinking mazda is japanese.

if you bought a protege of any kind, iirc, you lucked out - it's nearly all japanese from the design to the body to the mechanical. again, if i'm not mistaken, they were all made in japan and shipped to elsewhere in the world. if you buy a standard 3 or 6 however... hahaha, you're 90+% ford - and made in north america. the speed3 and speed6 though are still mostly japanese and made in japan.

Please don't tell me that my msp has a ford motor in it. I was hoping that the 2% was like the rotors or something, that would explain all the rust on the them and the serious warping.

:( don't call the Protege engine a ford, it makes Hiroshima and Matsuda himself cry!
edit: also the 6 is build in the U.S., but not the 3.
Hofu and Hiroshima plants ftw!

well since someone said the motor is a japanese motor and the probe had the same japanese motor in it (iirc), im guessing the 2% is probably part of the interior pieces. like the door trimming and stuff like that. but ive also heard that bmw had a hand in engineering the undercarriage and suspension on the p5.
ford bought all these companies b/c in order to make it in their business, you have to own something. they have the rights to the companies, thats it.
kinda like if you have the rights to a beatle's song. you own the song, but you didnt write it or perform it.

Yeah, the inside of my door clearly states Assembled and Manufactured in Japan...so the 2% is wiring harnesses and US market only stuff.....I've had plenty of Mazdas, when it was a B3000, I was proud it was 1/2 Ford, when it's a 626, I'm proud it's all Mazda....

Just know that the Protege is all Mazda and the F-series engine (as good and bad as it is :) ) is Mazda designed. Otherwise, why would Ford have had two different 2.0L engines between the one in the Focus and the FS-DE?

Ford owns 33% of Mazda all financial. Sure they do share some things but almost all of the P5 is Mazda. Sure the some of the harness is Ford but THE ENGINE IS ALL MAZDA, NOT OUT OF A PROBE. The European Focus uses the Mazda 2.0L engine. I hate that there are so many people that say Mazda and Ford are the same.

the only time id want to own a ford (or any domestic) is if i drove a truck, cuz the japanese dont know whats up with trucks lol
but i hate domestics, so i dont see that ever being a problem.
i think the only truck that the japanese have gotten decent is the titan 5.6 v8, that thing is pretty beast ill admit

i dont know wether u guys have them over there, but in england we have a ford focus st170, its kinda like an middle ground performance car, 170bhp, good handerling etc. well apparently they de tuned my car 323 sport, so it wouldnt be in competition with the st170. pretty gay i think. doesnt matter though cos the duratec engine in them cant be tuned much, where as ours have the potential for anything :)

I just wanted to correct some of this info. the mazda 6, b series trucks, and tributes are built in america. the mazda 3 and the rest of the lineup are built over in japan.
So if you buy a mazda 3, its built in japan.
mazda 6? built in N. America.
speed vehicles? All Japan.

didnt the 6 take over the taurus platform?
just the platform though, i wanna clear that up before i start getting flamed for calling the 6 a taurus.

yeah you're gonna get flamed for that for sure..
I think the 6 (non-speed) is made on the same production line as the rustang though haha

i dont think so, cuz the mustang is made at a rear wheel drive plant, and the 6 is fwd. i dunno, you could be right. im wrong a lot.
id rather the 6 come from the taurus line cuz at least ford had the decency to discontinue the taurus.

It's funny that people say the 3rd gen pros are Fords. Besides the label on the drivers door area that says 97% made in Japan, the first letter of the vin gives it away. "J"= Japan, "1"= US.

hey look on the bright side, the engine is sturdy as hell. I've been through four sets of pistons and the block has never cracked or warped or any of that good stuff. I got it machined and it is still as good as new, i used to get crap from my buddies and the muscle heads til i smoked them like a freshly rolled blunt! by the way what do they drive if i might ask?

Toyota only offered the TRD Supercharger. No turbo.
Anyhow, I can't believe someone thought the 6 was on the Ford Taurus platform......(omg)
The new Fusion, MKZ and whatever Mercury variant are built on the 6 platform though.

Mazda6 chassis was all new for the 6. Ford refers to this chassis as the CD3. The platform is shared by the Fusion/Millan/MKZ with minor tweeking, and with the Edge/MKX/CX-7/CX-9 with some serious re-engineering.
See the wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CD3_platform
The FS-DE 2.0L engine is of Mazda design. It was found in the Ford Probe, as well as other cars beginning in 1993.

ah, some clearification is nice.
if the fsde was found in the probe in 93, what did mazda have that it was in?
and was 93 the first year for the fsde?

The MX-6.. the Probe was a Mazda platform
http://www.dragtimes.com/images/3787-1995-Mazda-MX6.jpg
and if I'm not mistaken, it was on a derivative of the 93-97 Mazda 626 platform, which the BJ protege is a derivative of.
I have a 626 sitting in my garage with an FSDE in it. Sometime in the future, I'm thinking of pulling the motor and checking if the gearbox innards will swap with mine (longer final ratio). If first gear is longer, I'd like to pull that one, too.
Maybe the reason people think the Protege is a Ford is this:
http://img.drive.com.au/drive_images/Editorial/2005/02/09/9laser_leadimage.jpg
Which of course, is bull. The reason I bought a Laser is because I was reassured by the fact that there was actually a Mazda underneath.
