In order to disingage my clutch, i have to kick it all the way to the floor. its becoming a real pain in the ass cause i'm used to a shorter clutch and i keep grinding gears (its like nails on a chalk board!). is there any way i can shorten the clutch? thanks

got it used w/ about 73500 miles on it. i used to drive a p.o.s. '91 s10 and when it came to replacing the clutch, a clutch was a clutch. are there better brand clutches or performance clutches? wut should i look for? how much should it cost me?
thanks

The install guide that came with my Exedy clutch instructed me to adjust it so that the engagement point was as close to the floor as possible. They said that close to the floor is what most people are used to and like.

I dunno... I don't mind it too much.

The shop manual seems to agree with that. However, if the clutch is not the problem grinding gears may indicate a need to change fluid or a fried synchronizing cones or both.

If you determine you need a new clutch then I would suggest OEM unless you plan to increase power.

another thing thats startin to bug me is that i have to use a good deal of force to get it into first gear. i can kick the clutch down as far as it goes and i'll still have to push really hard to get it in.

You can adjust the throw...if you look at the diagram posted by NVP5White, near the top of the clutch arm there is a rod going from the arm to the fire wall. With a 10mm open end wrench you can lengthen/shorten that rod & change when the clutch engages. Be carefull!!! the adjustment nut is on tight & I gave myself a nasty cut when it popped sudenly loose on me!
This adjustment was posted on the Mazda 6 part of the forums but I can't find it now....

I'd like to get rid of that "free play," as indicated in the diagram. All my pedals have it, and it sounds/feels junky when driving.

That's what this adjustment can do...if you look under the dash where all the clutch stuff is, you will see that the rod goes into a plunger that activates the hydraulics of the clutch mechanics-by changing the lenghth of the rod you change the pedal height & how quickly the clutch is engaged.

The free play allows you to have your foot on the pedal without worrying about disengaging the clutch.

Wasn't like that on my Miata--everything was nice and tight.

Yeah, I think the freeplay is more a function of the mechanism. I think they when cheap on the Protege's.

oh and btw, if you plan on doin this, you'll need a 9mm and a 12mm wrench.
