In an effort to try to help people looking to upgrade/change the wheels of their Mazda5 (NOT Protege5) I have compiled a small gallery of pics.
I've done my best to get the specs on the wheel & tire combos...but I do not guarantee their accuracy (ughdance) as these pics and information were found on a site dedicated to our Japanese counterpart the Premacy...and since my Japanese is nonexistant I am at the mercy of google's translator.
Here is the link, there is alot of information on there if you can decypher it.
http://minkara.carview.co.jp/society/newpremacy/

Specs are in the pictures...click the pics to expand.

Enjoy!

*I will update as I find more images & specs*

Please keep this thread on topic...no questions about what body kit or what springs or whatever is in any particular pic.
If you have any questions, PM me and I'll see what I can find out.

I agree awesome post!!! :D :D :D

This gives me some great ideas for new wheels now...I've been looking for some nice pics of the 5 to see what works with it...

No problem guys (and gals) Glad I could be of assistance.

I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to wheel brands...but I'm pretty sure Rays makes Volk wheels and probably a few other brands.
Also, Stitch is a brand of wheel, but AFAIK they're Japan only...and I'm under the impression that they are knockoffs or copies FWIW.

Tirerack has a pretty cool web site that lets you pick your make model AND color vehicle. The page then displays a picture of your vehicle with stock wheels and rims. As you select different rims, it updates the picture so you can see what it will look like.

The tirerack.com site is cool to get a general idea, but the pic isn't close enough or detailed enough.

Saint...awesome thread. Thanks for the time and effort.

Can we get this stickied, and make it an ongoing thing to post up pics whenever someone gets aftermarket wheels?

Looks like we have our first member (that I know of) rollin on 'dubs'
feolin had some 20X8.5 +38 (?) U2 model 35 on his Mazda5 for a little while.

He says that they rubbed just a weee bit on the back and that it was rim to fender contact. But he did say that the poke (rim past fender) was not very much. So I'm thinking that with some careful planning and the proper suspension mods (coilovers or air + camber), people...the daring ones...will be able to run a halfway decent VIP (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123652196&highlight=wheel) fitment.

Way too cool!! I'm getting my new Sportmax 006 High gloss black 18" rims next week (after waiting about 6 weeks), with Hankook UHP 225ZR40/18 rubber. Already 'invested' around $5k into AV entertainment, now looking at some performance upgrades, but don't know where to start, or who to trust. If I can get around another 50-80hp gain, that would be sufficient, especially lower end torque. Thinking of a cold air intake, and exhaust/suspension mods to start. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

My guess would be AUTOEXE.

But my guess is highly influenced by the big red AUTOEXE sticker on the rear window.

I have the Fujita CAI on my Mazda5 and don't really find there is much improvement performance-wise. For 50-80hp gains you will certainly need more than CAI and exhaust work. The only way to get that kind of hp increase is to install a turbo or supercharger on the engine. Some of the guys on the Mazda3 section of this forum have done turbo upgrades, so there's good info there to learn from.

Good to know, and I figured it would involve one of the two. I asked the dealer how much, and if they could install a turbo w/intercooler in my 5, and even though they've never did one, said it was possible.....$1500 for the turbo, another $2500 for the intercooler and plumbing/parts, plus labour, which at $95/hr, would involve about 4 to 8 hrs or more. I don't think so!! I emailed a couple of places in California, who told me they would have to fabricate the brackets/other parts for a supercharger. I still have 60k left on my powertrain warranty and don't want to take a chance on voiding it. there must be some other way of squeezing some hp out of this thing. I don't mind paying the money as long as it's done right. I'd be happy with 200hp.

Are you running stock 17 x 6.5 Mazda5 rims? So, just to be sure (before I order the tires) and summarize, you're running Stock 17 Mazda5 rims and you're running with 225/45 R17 tires without any rubbing, bulging, scraping, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks and more power to mazda forum

18" RX-8 are 18x8 with a 50mm offset... they will stick out in the front just a bit... if you plan to go with them.. you could use a 3mm spacer for the rear to bring it flush with the fender...

mh01919
01-30-2008, 11:21 AM
I was also thinking of the RX-8 18"s. Sorry for belaboring the point, but... mounting as they are will result in the fronts sticking out a bit as in your photos and the rears set into the wheel well by 3mm? This wouldn't be too noticiable without the spacers right? Any other pics?

Has anyone mounted the '08 MX5 wheels on a Mazda5?

Do you have time to do after-market parts research? I'm sure there should be some awesome stuff around for your "Premacy"

Oh, and any issues driving on the other side of the road with a left side steering wheel? Dang, I'm seriously off-topic, luv your ride!...

On weekends I have time to go down to the local dealer and check out the JDM parts available..................When it's time for me to go back Ill be on a shopping spree for my 5 and MS3 :D

rmbmazda, don't the rims stick out past the fenders? rx-8's offset are 50 and they pop out just a bit in the front. can you post pictures from the front or back to show the flushness with the fender. if 18x8 et45 fit.. i'm going to get a different set of rims. thanks in advance.

225 45 18, I didn't really have any choice with the tires because I bought used rx8 rims and the tires came with them. So did you get your rims yet?

808mz5
04-24-2008, 02:20 PM
rnb... I got my rims a couple of months ago and was debating on getting another set. We have a new addition to the family coming now.. tires have dropped low on the priority list. Most likely will get tires once the stock toyos go to crap or if I can hit a big sale at work.

How does the ride compare between the 2 sets of rims you had? The VIP rims were on 225/40's and now you are on 225/45's. Can you notice a difference?

rmbmazda
04-24-2008, 03:07 PM
Well, the reason why i actually got rid of those rims and tires is because i could not take out the vibration when im driving, i had them balance twice plus got hub rings and still no luck. So i dont know if it was the rims or the 235/40 tires, but anyway now with the rx8 rims being alot lighter with the 225/45 tires, it was definitely the right choice.

Wow those rims are beautiful, it looks perfect having a white exterior. 18x8? or 18x7.5?

Hi there really nice fitment guide! It has helped me find the right combo for my 5. I just wanted to add my 2 cents incase I may be able to add to the fitment guide. I ended up going with 18x7.5" RSL Ricochet (off ebay-cheap price $250 rims, $350 tires (m/b and rings) and shipping to Hawaii $900 total. I went with 225/40s, but 215 or 205 would be the better fit cus i have slight rub in rt. rear. Offset wasn't ideal at +42mm but looks nice and wouldn't be a problem if the tires were more narrow. Here are the pics. I hope u can enjoy and add to the guide. P.S. the front wheels don't really stick out beyond the fenders, it is "flush".

Well, I swiped a curb at about 5mph and I blew out one of my Yokohama’s. Only had 600 miles on it too.

Question: Does Yokohama or Mazda offer a road hazard warranty on new vehicles? I’d be more than happy to prorate the wear towards a new tire since, well, there is no wear.

If not, has anybody downsized for everyday tires? I’d like something with more profile, not less. Tirerack lists 205/55-16 for winter tires - can I use this for everyday driving? Wouldn’t this make the ride more “car-like”?

If I end up having to buy a new tire and don’t downsize, I’ll probably end up buying another Yokohama. The other three are still in “like-new” condition so buying one more would give me plenty of time to figure out what I’m going to do with the wheels / tires, if anything.

On a side note, I’ve never had a tire rip at such a low speed. Are these lower profiles extra sensitive or something? When I say I was going 5 mph, I really was going that slow - I was turning into a parking lot with another car coming out.

Edit: A replacement Yokohama Avid S34 (the OEM tire) runs $165 at Discount Tire, plus $18 for tax, fees, stems, old tire disposal, etc ($183 out the door), though I would then gain lifetime tire rotation for all four tires.

I am still interested in downsizing, though now it's looking like that would not be for two or three years at the earliest. Upgrading the audio system is more of a priority to me (new head unit, speakers, and I'm looking at an Alpine flip down DVD player).

I have no idea, it's not mine. I found it on a japanese website that's very similar to cardomain. He posted the specs and I posted them here. It's a really nice setup, but I'm sure the ride is quite a bit more harsh than stock because it sits pretty low and it's on 19s with 35 series tires.

Not a good combination if you're not willing to sacrifice ride quality. That might be the setup I go with on my MS3, but I don't know for sure yet. Here's more pics of it.

You have good eyes :D:D:D.The only thing i will do for sure this summer is window tint. And for the body kit, that's only for your eyes :D. not feeling that car at all. weird sized fog lights that shouldn't be there to begin with. Those flares under the side skirts look out of place. No idea why he wouldn't remove the side guards.
I like the drop, front lip looks good, but then again, he could have just bought a body kit instead of buying different bumper and still adding front lip. I am personally not a big fan of the rear lip and/or that huge spoiler.
Tail and front lights look good, I actually like it a lot and been thinking of tinting my tails for a long time now. Black roof looks good though :)

No offense to anybody here, just my personal honest opinion.

well, if that is just another style of bumper, which by the I could find even after doing some research, then you'd think it would have OEM fog lights.

I think the fogs look good. The outer shape fits the bumper good, but the inner shape is questionable. Flares are iffy, I guess he's just trying to break up the lines or just trying something completely different. I still like them, but wouldn't do it on mine.

As for the bumper, he didn't buy it, that's stock. It's the base model bumper and personally I think it looks horrible. It doesn't come with OEM fogs either. The aftermarket lip made it look a little better, but I still like the 08-09 bumpers so much more. Overall, he's done a lot and I like it. Here's a couple of pics of what it looked like before he added the lip, sides, and rear.

In the original post there is a pic of a Red 5 running RX-7 rims (16x8-50mm offset) with 205-55-16. Does anyone know if I can just throw these on as is, or is there a special setup? I know I have to switch the TPMS.

Thinking about doing this on our 5. Just put a brand new set of Kumho Ecsta ASX and up-sized them to try and get a smoother ride, but the wife still complains they are still not smooth enough...she is the primary driver of our 5.

I tried putting a custom laser cut 6mm aluminum spacer on my rear wheels but decided not to push through with it. I already got after market wheels on it, ADR sokudo10 17x8 +48 and has only about a little over 1/2 inch of usable thread that goes to the wheel nuts. using the spacers will definitely reduce the remaining usable threads.

Maybe if I change the studs to longer ones...

Since the notion of not being sure is killing me...I ordered one wheel(no tire) to try it on and see what my clearance is and if I see that it wont work I'll return the wheel and pay the restocking fee and I'll be at peace with myself and I wont have paid the $1500 to get them to regret it...I'm ok with losing up to $100 to be sure instead of $1500 and selling the wheels I like and know dont rub and have plenty of clearance. They just look small to me...I had 22" on my Rodeo...I guess that would probably be my problem. Here is the wheel I'm looking at.

I did the same thing with Tirerack and ordered one Moda R6 19x8 +45 back in 2006 to test fit it on my Mazda6. I knew it would stick out a bit, but it was more than I wanted. I would've had to roll and pull the fenders. So I test fitted it, didn't like the outcome, sent it back, paid restocking fee, received my refund all in a period of two weeks.

I don't remember how much the wheel or restocking fee was, they just took the fee out of the refund they owed me and charged it back to my card. I was happy with that. I'm glad I didn't do it because I traded in the car for a Mazda5, and that fitment definitely wouldn't have gone on the 5.

I actually looked into getting that particular wheel for the 5. It's a nice looking wheel. A classic. I just don't like the screws at the tips of the spokes.

I understand what you mean when taking someone else word about something without trying it yourself, I've been there plenty of times. I might have never done that fitment before, but I've done enough research and looking at other peoples trial and error to know it won't fit. 20x8 with that offset is pushing it, but 8.5 is a definite no go without them sticking way out or seriously modding the fenders. I don't claim to know it all, but I'm pretty sure about this one.

Good luck and please post pics of your experience so that the forum can benefit by using them for reference. Thanks.

That really is a nice looking wheel. It doesn't look too bad without the tire, but once you install the tire and lower the jack that'll be when you'll have clearance issues. The back of the wheel looks like it almost touching the strut, but it's really hard to tell at that angle.

Just as I thought, it does stick out a bit and the rear will sit flush, if not a little past flush. Which means you'll definitely have to roll your fenders. Lowering might be out of the question, unless you give it some negative camber.

Thanks for the update.

Thats the thing..it is lowered...If it wasnt....I would get them..the tire I was going to get is the smallest width wise so it would stretch like the 18's now so I have more of an angle when it comes up into the fender well...I have one more thing to check before I send it back....I want to see how much the RX-8 18's stick out when the car is jacked up..I know the camber is off when you lower it (even more so than stock) There is like maybe 1/2 inch clearance from strut to wheel ...maybe a little less.

Trdkamuri51o

go for it.. or have the backspacing professionally shaved for better fitment.. im sure u can pull 2-3mm off...

They were 20 x 8.5 with a 45mm offset .....I actually didnt try it....the front said enough for me. They were for an RX-8...I just thought since I had RX-8 wheels...why wouldn't aftermarket wheels fit also. I actually sent the wheel back today. well my question was related to the rear mostly reason is im rolling the fenders on the new 5 already (i know had it 1 day and im already starting) and was checking how close it was in the rear... mm measurements work great...

ur pushing the envelop from the looks of things with an 8 up front.. but it looked like u still had a few mm space between your strut and rim.... just curious.. i didnt see a clear shot of how close it was for my own reference..

Um do you realize you're going wider with a higher profile? Seeing how OE is 205/50 with the 17" I'd go 215/45 or 225/45.

I have an '06 M5 and currently have MS6 rims on it running 225/40/18's. They need to be retired - and I'm looking at getting a slightly taller sidewall. My local tireshop has a special on a set of 225/55/18's - do you think those would fit without rubbing? The tech at the shop thinks they'll fit, but he didn't seem too certain. I think the tallest I've seen people on here with are 225/45/18's - any input would be great! Thanks guys....

This ain't just a question of rubbing or not this is "dangerous".You will have problem with your ABS system, very slow start, loss of traction and of course rubbing. You can't put a 225/55 on 18" on a 5. And why in the name of god would you like your 5 to look like a tractor ?

Even 225/45 is pushing it. I'd go 225/40 for the 18s.

Last summer i was on 225/45 without any drop and on big bumps it was rubbin in the back.

Hey SGT, if you dont mind me asking. What offset and width are your wheels? I got a set of the 20's that I tried on my 5 ( in this thread )but I got them in 19's instead because the offset was 3mm higher than the 20's and I thought I might be able to stretch a 215/35 tire over it for clearance purposes...I'd like to go with the tire you have but the rim pokes slightly past the fender and I'm thinking if I dont get an angle on the tire its going to hit the fender......any help would be great...I sent Tillyspeed a PM asking about his but he never got back to me....but I havent seen him on lately....Then I noticed you where running 19's too.

Kid5, no problem, happy to help....

I'll try to keep this as short as possible, if still confused PM me.

1. My after market rim and tire guy said this:

a) 225/35 R 19 is the MAX he'd go with for Three reasons:

b) Yes the Rim WILL "the rim pokes slightly past the fender" past or AKA stick out from the fender, this is NOT A PROBLEM, because of the way the suspension works on the 5, tire goes "into" the fender at an angle.

c) You CAN go 235/30 R 20, but that is such an expensive Rims and Tires, BOTH special order here in Okinawa, it'd take a $3,000 purchase up to (are you sitting down?) $6,500.00 deal, ONE FREAKING INCH??? (shocked) Well I guess the 20" crowd is the "shizzle Nizzle" arou nd here and rule of thum, SUPPLY AND DEMAND, a few years ago, I did 17" AND when you needed to buy new tires in 3-4 years, (If lucky to go that long) it's going to cost ya $1,800 JUST FOR THE TIRES! (upbum)

2. "What offset and width are your wheels?" -20 I think, I did not check, I just said to him, "make em fit" and he did all the math, if you PM me, I can ask him next time down there at the store. If you got to a REAL tire dealer, that is part of the 1,000's of dolers you are spending, LET THEM DO THE MATH and BAKC IT UP!

3. "19's instead because the offset was 3mm higher than the 20's and I thought I might be able to stretch a 215/35 tire over it for clearance purposes..."

Not a problem, I run 225/35 R19's not a problem.

Hope that helps, but really I leave the MATH to the pros, that is what they get paid for. :)

Peace!(rei)

Well actually what I needed to know was just the width of the wheel and the offset. The wheels I got are 19 x 8.5 with a 48mm offset...the 20's I tried on were 20 x 8.5 with a 45mm offset. The 20's stuck out slightly more than the 19's do. I understand the geometry of the suspension when it goes into the wheel well but do you with your set up get any rubbing...I'd love to go 225/35 because that would make my speedometer perfect (maybe slightly faster than what the speedometer reads) I know that the 215/35 will work with no rubbing but the speedometer will be slightly off.

Again, not sure, I could go look, but I did not do the math at all. (shrug)

I attribute that to the 20" Wheel is just plain larger and therefore will appear to be closer to the fender i.e. sticking out.

I understand the geometry of the suspension when it goes into the wheel well

Good, some people don't take that into account, especially when they want to lower the car/van later. (rtfm)

but do you with your set up get any rubbing...

No, None, nothing. AND I even put on lowering springs and still ZERO, NONE, Nada rubbing, so what you've described I think will work no problem.

Do you have the rims and tires? If so, go to a local shop and ask them to put the tires on one rim and try it out, or take what you do have to them and ask if they will help you FIT it so it works.

So you plan to lower your Mazda 5 at some point? If so, go with the 19" wheels and 225/35 tread.

I'd love to go 225/35 because that would make my speedometer perfect (maybe slightly faster than what the speedometer reads)

Bingo! Here in Japan we have this F'd up thing called JCI/Inspection, it has 10,343 vehicle specific things people CAN and CAN'T do to their cars/van/truck and one BIG ONE is, the TIRE SIZE (Diameter or circumference) must be within + or - 3 MM of the stock tire! So what you just described is what I run... 3MM larger than stock tire.

I know that the 215/35 will work with no rubbing but the speedometer will be slightly off.

Not even noticeable in my opinion.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Peace!(rei)

My 5 is lowered with Megan Racing Springs... 1.8" drop. Thanks for your input...I have the wheels no tires...I got them that way cuz I promised my GF that I would buy her engagement ring before I bought another set of wheels but Tire Rack was having a closeout on the 19's and if I didnt act fast they would be gone and lo and behold I ordered them on 9/30 and got them on 10/2 and they werent even available anymore on 10/5 when I checked so I lucked out. So have to worry about engagement ring and then tires....I just want to make sure they are the right ones when I do go to order them. Thanks Again!

So Kid how is the ride on those megan springs?

Honestly, every car or truck I'ver ever had I've lowered and this has to be the best handling lowered vehicle I've had. The ride is great one of the things I hated about my other lowered vehicles was the bouncing or hard hitting over slight bumps in the road and I dont get that with the Megan Racing Springs...I strongly recommend them.(breakn)

Thanks. How would you compare this with the ride of the stock springs? Is it stiffer than the stockers? I have MS3 springs on right now, ride is great but thinking of going down a bit lower than what it offers (1in)

If you buy anything from tire rack, check the screws for the center caps. I lost two screws on the first day of driving. I took them all out and applied locktite.

BTW, I updated my stereo system thread too :D

Thanks! I didn't want to put too much more rotating mass on the car tho. And even tho these are lightweight wheels, each new rim with tires weigh 1lb more than the stock wheels and tires with 25k mi on them. I thought I was gonna be saving weight... Also, I didn't want to give up too much sidewall.
As for the drop, I would love to drop this, but a very mild drop. Like an inch. Most drops seem too dramatic. The roads here are terrible, And I have to park in a big tore up gravel parking lot everyday at work. Even the stock 5 would scrape in certain areas.
Sometimes I steal my Jeep from my wife to drive to work (drive2)

All very good points, I was just pokeing fun at ya on the size, each guy/gal knows best what they need. Also I agree, DON'T drop /lower your ride if there is ANY chance of scrape OR bad roads, etc. (usa)

Can 2004 Mazda 6 OEM rims fit on 5? Got this from my friend. Mazda 6 rims: 16 x 7 - 55 offset - with 205/55/r16 tires. would their be an effect with the weight of the wheels? do I need to use spacer for this rims? thanks. see attached photo. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/5043/62669336.th.jpg

thanks, Do you know the backspacing size for the OEM mazda5 rims? coz the mazda 6 rims I showd I think it has 6"-6.4" with 55mm offset. I'm just thinking if this wheels will make some strut rubbing. thanks in advance.
