View Full Version : What are good Rods

Since pretty much every post I've checked on here has said that the stock rods suck, I was wondering what would be the best rods to go with? I would like to up the PSI on my stock turbo to about 8-10. Also are there any other internals that I should really replace besides the rods?

There are a bunch of companies who make stronger/forged rods for the fsde, Pauter, Oliver, etc. most of which would be more than strong enough for those goals. Check out some of the vendor sites.
Might as well go ahead and do pistons otherwise you will have to get the stock ones modified by a machine shop so that the wrist pins will work. If you are going to do all that, then you should go ahead and have the machine work done on the block at the same time, while it is out. I would not suggest just slapping rods and stock bore pistons in without sending the block out to a reputable machinist and at least having everything cleaned up really well.
Also, check into getting some type of EMS. You need to compensate fuel for increased boost. To tell you the truth 8-10 psi can be run on the stock motor (at your own risk, of course) and with supporting mods and fuel control it can be done somewhat safely (still at your own risk, lol).
By the way welcome to the forums

the easiest way would be to get a piston/con rod combo. Then pull the head and remove the upper and lower oil pan. Take off rod bolts and push the con rod and piston up through the head, reinstall new pistons and rods with new rings and bearings. Make sure you weight out each piston and rod and match them together to get each assembly as close as possible in weight. Reinstall with a new headgasket. Of course that is not the "proper" way to rebuild a motor (someone who went to school for this stuff is probobly laughing at this procedure) but it works fine from what i have seen done by some of my friends first hand. No issues after years of abuse.

Jeff's suggestion is valid. Depending on ring tolerances it can work fine. Has for many of my friends just like Jeff's. The best route is to remove the block, have it cleaned, honed and install new pistons and rods; in short, a proper build.
8-10psi is fine on the stock motor with good tuning though. Pauter, Oliver and K1 Technologies make good rods.

anything that is not the stock FS rod is probably better. Of course this is an assumption and I have no techincal data to back it up though.
I bought a built motor from my friend and it has forged crower rods and cp pistons which have been proven time and time again.

I was thinking the same thing. Of course it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a built motor, because in the long run you must likely are going to want to run more boost.
