*** Not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm still new here***
So, Driving down the road and the speedometer went from 70 jumped up to 80 dropped down to 60 then back up to about 72-73 km/hr.
While that was happening, the e-brake light and the abs lights popped on.
After fluttering around 72-73km/hr, the speedometer dropped down to 0. It stayed there for about 1 second and then jumped back up to 70.
I should mention that the rev's stayed the same and I wasn't pulling any "funny stuff".
When the speedometer returned to 70, the abs light and e-brake light turned off. This happened 4 times on the way to work within a 10 minute period. I was just happy to get to work. On the way home, it didn't happen at all.
Weird.

Any suggestions?

50,000Km on the car and we just picked it up from the dealer (used) 21/2 weeks ago.

Could there have been an UFO in the area, maybe? lol

Just kidding! sorry, that is weird, couldn't tell you what that is, sounds like stock computer issues? hope it went away and doesn't happen again, i guess. Hard to fix a problem that isn't there when you want it to be.

Try talking to the dealer you bought the car from, if they did any repair work to it they'll know what it may be. I'd guess the connector for the speed sensor.

See, I orginally thought it might be an abs sensor as well, but that doesn't explain the speedo acting weird.

It's gonna go back to the dealer today, they will fix it and I'm not paying for it. They don't know about that part yet. I'll post here when they tell me what is wrong with it.
thanks for the suggestion everyone.

yes it does. speed is read by the wheel sensor on the msp. we do not have a speedo gear.

Charging voltage doing weird stuff? Proteges have a vehicle speed sensor on the back of the trans for vehicle speed. Used to be mechanical back in the day. Now electrical.

so, I took the car to the dealer and demanded that they look at it. The tech took it for a drive, cleaned the abs sensors (spit and polish job) at the wheels and delcared the car fixed. I took it not even 12 blocks and the same damn thing happened again. Only one time. I phoned the dealer back right away and they fed me a line about how they are reluctant to start putting parts into a car that is not throwing any hard codes at them. When the tech took the car for his test run, nothing out of the norm happened. today, I had lots of running around to do and the speedo didn't act up untill shortly after the dealer declared the car fixed. Although they did admit that they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Strange things are a happenin' with the speed.

This same thing started happening to me after I took the car into mazda for a service about 2 weeks ago. The abs and ebrake lights randomly come on and stay on for a while and then go off. Only have 20800ish miles on the car. Did you ever get yours figured out?

take the battery out of a friends car and try using it for a few days. Maybe you battery is fawkd and is not charging properly, or is not outputting power properly or you have a lose connection in your electrical system. First place to start is to check the connections on the alternator when you are bored and have 5 mins and a flashlight. Then check and recheck the grounds in the engine bay.Pull off the terminals and clean them. Make sure connections and you battery tie piece are all tight and not moving around. If you battery bobs around and grounds the positive on something like your hood or chasis I dont think it will have positve results. If you pull off the terminals a bit on the battery while the car is running, or the battery is almost out of power you will see similar results that you have decribed which makes me think it is either a grounding, storing or recharging electrical problem.
