Ok, if you want a brand name quality manifold made, join the list.
GT Spec is considering making a manifold for the MSP and FSDE.
Post your interest so they will want to get this made.
This will also help them with setting the MSRP.
Edit: GT Spec is no longer considering, but Steed Speed has one in R&D

this is of course dependant on it being a stock replacement sort of deal..... keeping the turbo in the stock place and all that.

Just keep adding names. Pricing will be fair market value not like the previous ones. I will be helping with the R&D if and once we get to that stage. You will know it is a great product. I only help bring quality parts to the table.

Is (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123654384&page=7&highlight=turbo+manifold) it for a direct swap like MAM manifold or will it need custom downpipe work?

I am on both lists, so price, function and fitment are important. I know GT Spec makes good suspesion components, but are there any exhaust examples to check out for other makes. The other list is for Thunder, commonly known for their exhaust work. I am not trying to say GT won't knock our socks off, just trying to get a little more info. Thanks, Scott.
EDIT: I did go back and look at their site. Their manifolds are actually very attractive. I think they will do well if they stay in that mid $500 range like their Evo mani.

GTSPEC is not new to the exhaust/performance market. We have been making turbo manifolds for some time now but we are currently doing market research to provide a turbo manifold for the mazdaspeed protege.
Check out our website (www.GTSPEC.com) for pictures of the turbo manifold and headers we produce. Currently we have applications for WRX/STI, Evolution, 350z/G35 and SR20DET. Below is a link to the performance part of our website.

Well come on buddy let's get these things goin. The MSP's have long been awaiting manifolds for the masses as long as the price isnt ridiculous.

very nice. Also the prices are more than fair as well, although the MSP one would no doubt be slightly more expensive than the one for say the SR20DET, it could still come in less than $1000.
So go ahead, give in to peer pressure, everyone else is doin it! well, not really...be the first kid on the block then.

yea i was lookin at those, they look awesome.
everytime a company does research we dont get a mani. so just jump into it blindly so we get one :)
I couldn't have said it any better myself...my manifold is about to give anytime now, and I don't want to buy another stock mani. and gamble that i'll have the money to replace it again in another 30k

As of right now they are developing for:

2.2L MX 6 W/ TURBO 1988-92
2.2L 626 W/ TURBO 1988-92

Hi,
I spoke with Noah about developing a manifold for your guys. As stated earlier in the thread, we're working on a manifold for the Mazda F2 engine and have done basic research on the FE engine. We have a BP at the shop which might also become a test bed.
Note that our R&D is mainly done in Montreal, Quebec (HiVolume Distribution headquarter). The manifolds are designed and manufactured in Alberta (near Calgary). Typically fitment and tests are done in Montreal, but can also be done in Alberta if required.
With this said, we're looking into having protegegarage.com offer our current products (BOVs, etc.)
Our BOV won an award at the last SEMA Las Vegas show. Stayed tuned in the coming weeks for our 2007 style.
In the meantime, the 2006 design:

Cool, is this the one that fits in between two silicone connectors?
hivolume.com
04-18-2007, 08:24 AM
Actually, this is the 2006 model of the BOV. It no longer uses silicone connectors. A built-in set of o-rings and the set screws hold it in place, no welding. The 2007 design is slightly more compact.
These units are nice as they're in-line with the pipe, so it's perfect for tight fitments. Also, VERY discreet if painted black or the same color as your pipe. Blends right in!
welcome to the boards Jean!

Hi Guys,
I am Leen Steed, owner of Steed Speed Performance. I have been working on a design to replace the Mazdaspeed Callaway cast manifold as I'm told there is some interest in a more substantial unit. I have a lot of projects on the go and am currently building manifolds for the Horsepower Freaks 750hp M3 kit so time is tight right now.
Before I put too much time into this Mazda project I really need to know if there is any real demand for it! My manifolds are cut from steel billet on CNC machines and are quite the work of art.

Good to hear...but why not do a replacement manifold to upgrade our small turbo to a T3 based unit...there are people here with the need to upgrade the turbo instead of the manifold...JMO.

I can't speak for everyone but I'd definitly pay for a manifold that would bolt up to all the stock hardware and showed hp gains as well. The manifolds on your website look nice man. Do you have any other info on the style of manifold you'd be making for the MSP (log, tubular, equal length, etc...)?
As for demand consider this, there is only one other company (that I know of) currently selling manifolds for the MSP. The list for the first batch GB was filled up in no time and there are still alot of people needing a replacement. They pretty much have the market all to themselves at this point. If an MSP owner has a broken EM then the only choices are buying a ridiculously expensive new mani from Mazda or waiting for another batch of manifolds to be made. Our stock manifolds don't seem to stand the test of time very well so eventually that's a decision everyone might have to make.

I'd be really interested in a EM that would be a straight replacement to the OE.
Mine has just cracked after 50 000km and I believe it is because the Em is under tension from holding the turbo and exhaust. Btw my exhaust bracket just before the cats has broken, so it doesn't help.
If someone can come up with a EM that has somekind of a bracket that ties to the engine block to help disperse the load and allow the EM to withstand stress for a long time, he's got my order.
I'm in Montreal and do autoslalom on regular basis. All the guys that run MSPs in the club need a tuff EM too.

Ditto. Your price point is right on if you can build a quality product that has quality results. I already shelled out 750 bucks for a MAM Manifold (that obviously never showed up) but all I need to see is a quality product that delivers and you've got at least one buyer. (yes)

Dude , i heard what happened w/ MAM. Don't wanna bring that story back but from those who used the TUBULAR EM , Pirana came first in my mind, compare it to an work of art. The product speaks for it self as for the Beau thats diff. story which is not my intend to bring in here.
Personaly i'd compare any new upcoming EM to the MAM's tubular EM.
IF it is comparable or better than i'd say i got a good deal other wise i'll keep looking for a used tubular or new EM from someone else.

i agree, the mam bullhorn is my fav and waited a long time to get my hands on one. The high quality, performance, and of course the look is unsurpassed. It amazes me that there is still a push for aftermarket parts for the msp, but hey I'm all for it. ;)

Some spec's would give us head's up on what we can do w/ the many.
What options will it have ex: t2 or t3 flange, stock turbo location or relocated position , down pipe matching w/ stock/vibrant exhaust or any other j-pipe combo etc???
HOW MUCH IS THIS GONNA GO FOR ??????????
Looking forward to this prototype (glare)

Is there going to be an option for a T3 flange?
http://www.reference3d.com/msp/manifolds 013.jpg
here are the runners :) there is talk about having a flange option but nothing concrete.
info from Leen Steed
"Manifold will be in 3 sections. One section will have the runners away from
the head and that will tie to a 2 piece sandwich which has the sections
going down to the flange. The runners are going to be bigger at the head
than the stock inlets which will allow for a bit of port matching or porting
oversize if desired. (yeah! stock port/header match is disgusting!!).
This way even if you don't port the step will be on the outside where it
can't slow down the gasses.
The runners are also tapering outwards away from the head which acts like an
expansion chamber at the point where the runners turn towards the flange
assisting flow around the corner.
You can never be sure what will happen to performance till you try it but I
am expecting a slight gain over stock and more for modified cars + it won't
crack!"

Looks interesting. Very different from everything else I've seen.
Radius is .9 inch but the volume increases substantially at that point which makes for a very large "bowl" for the expanded exhaust to maneuver through.
The Bently Bi turbo used this principle to make a tight 90 degree elbow which flowed almost as well as a straight pipe.

I will probably get one of you guys to do dyno testing for me. Hard to know what result will be but my billet manifold used by Horsepower Freaks on their M3 kit gave identical performance to their tubular prototype manifolds. I just finished an intake manifold which was dyno tested in California by my customer. I shortened the runners by half compared to stock and all the "experts" said it would suffer in the bottom end. In practise it gained 15 to 25 hp from idle to 4000! Nobody was more surprised than me as I was aiming for top end power. My days of trying to predict results are over LOL!. Figure I'll make a manifold and someone can test it and that will be all we need to know.

Dosn't the Mazda speed protege have 225hp stock?
The intake was a replacement for the upper plenum on the 22R Toyota as found in Celicas and 4runners etc. They are a popular turbocharging candidate as the motor is very strong with big rods and forged crank.
Think I'll have to swap my 1.8T Golf for a MS protege so I can do some R&D on intakes eh! Dosn't anyone make an intake already?
I'll probably have the Header CAD file done today so I'll post some pics for all to see.
Has anyone tried one of those tube headers shown on this topic? Looks pretty good! Don't know if he has the factory fittings on there though.
Here is some food for thought! Take a look at the Hahn Racecraft site and look at their "Log" style manifolds. They have run 9 seconds with that manifold on a Neon! Makes you think dosn't it?

Nope, unfortunately we're blessed with 170 hp of unforged stockness. It doesn't take too much to get up around 200 whp but the problems start there, no need to go into that here though. I like the design - very different from anything offered before. I can't wait to see some pre-production models or something.
Oh yeah, side note. That intake you're talking about - would that work on the 22RE engine? I got a '86 pickup as my other vehicle and I'll probably start working on that one soon. I was looking into a lot of LC Engineering stuff but I didn't know many other people offered aftermarket parts - gotta website?

Not yet but I believe CS is working on one. The stock IM from the 626 is a popular swap around here and there are decent gains using that over the stock MSP IM. A well designed IM for the MSP would probably make more power, but who knows until it's tried. Not alot of aftermarket support here so new stuff is always welcome.

I ordered material today. Once I have a prototype I'll need a victim/tester to see how it fits + evaluate performance for me. Id put a pic on here but have no idea how to do that LOL!
Welcome to Mazda Forums! (hi)
Although it's fine to post about an upcoming product and gauge interest...Please note that you will need to obtain Authorized Vendor status BEFORE conducting business in this community. Please refrain from posting any form of contact or sales information until you have become an Authorized Vendor.
To apply, please send me a PM (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=18).
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. I look forward to your PM.

I am just finishing the drawing (head flange) which should be done today. Material for prototype will be here Thursday and I'll get started cutting metal over the weekend. There is a local guy who might be able to test fit for me which would be easiest and quick. After that a production run of 10 will take about a month to complete and get ceramic coated.

access to those bottom studs is going to be a bitch... other than that, it looks good
steedspeed

Do you think I should slot the manifold for those lower inner studs?
I don't have a Protege so have been working from just a stock manifold for the design.
As far as I can tell from the CAD file it shouldn't be too bad.

The flange as drawn here is 5/8 thick which will be thinned down around the stud locations making for easy access with a wrench.

What do you mean by good? Performance? Strength?
From my experience I think it will perform much better than stock so you should gain a few HP + torque + faster spool/earlier boost.
Strength is second to none.
I'm not quite done with the looks side of it yet as I can't decide to keep it smooth or add a bit of design to it for looks. I might just engrave with my company name and leave it at that unless you guys would like something custom/personalised?
Speed3.5
09-22-2007, 07:04 PM
Well not only me and the rest of MSP owners but including you , performance strength and hp gain result is what is after this project.
i like what you got in mind in that " engraving something on it"
no pressure on the design/concept either, just waiting to see how much hp gain is gonna yell.
This would definetly provide better performance than stock as well don't get me wrong on that part either.
Keep up with you're work, seems you're taking GT SPEC by surprize on many design imo.
That's good as competing market + choices = lower prices :D

This thing looks badass... quality looks unlike anything out for the MSP right now. You've got my order if you ever produce them.
So whats up with the Banana?? Are we going to see a comeback or what??
Ryoga28

I didn't know GT SPEC was even interested in making a manifold for the msp. Last I heard from them, they were more interested in STI and EVO due to the market.

I just talked to ION about their manifolds and even with equal length runners they didn't see any power increase over stock except they made boost earlier. They have some cool stuff but it just goes to show that a fancy tubular manifold isn't the be all and end all. (theirs was made with inconel too FFS!). If you go to the turbo magazine website they had a project Protege on which they had good success with the ION stuff. Their products are simply replacing every pipe with a bigger one so easy to duplicate results.
I might see if they want to evaluate my manifold so we can get some numbers.

So whats up with the Banana?? Are we going to see a comeback or what??
Still a possibility. I might trade it in on something if it pisses me off too much. Needs a bunch of work in my opinion. If she comes back she needs to be broken down and inspected first before i'll trust her again to be safe. I've still got a shit ton of parts to go on it, but I just don't have the time to mess with it right now. So we'll see... if someone wants a project, they just need to let me know! (thumb)
Cheers man!

Ok so Leen Steed is just about done with the Mazdaspeed direct replacement proto manifold - As a feeler who is interested in picking one up? Leen is not an approved vender so, if enough people are interested, he will need someone who is to set up a a group buy. If the admins are ok with it I will start a GI thread once Leen has pics of the finished manifold.

I'm very interested but it will all depend on the price, the gains and when/how long it is available. I wont have money till around Christmas so if this is a one time thing that has to be paid before/around that time then I guess I wont be able to get one. I do need a new mani one way or the other though and it is between this one and another one that isn't finished yet from a certain company down south that is banned from this forum.

I like to see the price and gains like someone else said earlier, but Im trying or in the processes of making a mani just like one that a company use to sell before whatever the hell happen to them. I wasnt around yet for all that BS.....
i've asked Leen to get us a price point - he will not know the gains unless someone on the boards is willing to dino the manifold. i'm in the middle of a build so i cant help out in that area. i have asked however for a flow test comparison between the stock mani and his.
the reason for this list is to find out if there are still people interested in this product. at one point everyone needed a manifold which is why Leen offered to help the Protege community. i can say with certainty that it will be insanely high quality. im currently working to make his inline BOV work with a MAF sensor. the quality of that product is amazing. this is why i have asked him to design a replacement mani. it may not be tubular but it will last and be unique!
my guess is there will be a limited run of 5-10 manifolds. if interest continues i'm sure he would do another run.

Thank you for the suggestion. I watched that mani from the beginning of the GI thread and just didn't like how it turned out. Great price but then again it looks cheaper than what I want. So it will either be this one or the other forums mani which is going to be listed closer to $900 but with the forum member discount be available for a lil bit more than this one. But the other one has been in the works for almost a year and still isn't finished (they do things slower down south you know) so at this point I'm leaning towards this Steed Speed one. Not to mention from what I've seen so far this mani in my opinion is going to be the best looking one so as I said before I'm very interested and will add myself to the list.

just curious - who is making the other mani? if it is slsecret then my assumption is that a thieving someone is helping them design it. these are assumptions of course but even the very idea that they might be trying to sell a certain someones' product, which is all ready owed to many, is plain shit. i got screwed on the MAM manifold like a lot of others. that is another reason why i sought out Lean and asked him to make one. i know Lean is straight up and has a passion for what he does. he can also deliver a product which you think wouldn't be that hard given that people do it every day.
i don’t know much about the other mani but if the situation is at all a bit shady, stay clear.

I believe GhostOne is referring to Cullen over at SU. He has been trying to source a company to make a manifold for the MSP for over a year now. He successfully found a company to make one, but it was pure ass. He then found a different company to a better manifold, but the process has been extremely slow. That manifold has probably been "in progess" for the last 6 months....
ah - so I stirred up all those old emotions for nothing - more power to him. it would be nice to have a few options. yashart_mp3, you still working on a protege? thought you were unloading all your parts? speaking of which is the head all paid for? i'm about due for one (shady)

I am right there with you buddy. I went through the whole MAM manifold fiasco as well. Like you said, if there is one thing I learned from that experience, is if it seems a little fishy, stay clear!
Concerning the car, I'm actually going to keep it. I decided it would be wiser to continue saving for a home, rather than buy that lexus I had my eye on (and still do :)) I've been doing small mods (smic, intake, midpipe, etc); pretty much making the stock turbo system as efficient as possible, without increasing boost, and keeping the car reliable.
The head actually still isn't paid off... Damian has been going through some rough times, so I'm patiently waiting/holding for him. He has one more payment to make, and then its all his. If anything changes, you'll be the first to know!

What am I looking at here? Is it a mold or jig? IDK, sorry
*Nevermind, I watched the other videos now.
Looks like it weighs as much as an Anchor.
Is this many a direct replace for MSPs or has this not been established?
Why would I want this instead of a Hiboost cast iron?
I don't have any of the concerns about turbo placement since my P5 will be a full custom FI setup
steedspeed

This is just a replacement for the stock cast manifold but I can make one for a bigger turbo if there is interest.

It will finish at 12 lbs so no it isn't an "anchor" If you check out the Horsepower Freaks website and look at the internal photographs of their M3 BMW manifold you will see that I hollow out the insides to lighten the manifolds.
Right now I just want to test fit it so I am getting it to the point where I can tack weld the parts together just for that purpose. If all is well I will take it apart and finish the machining and get it welded together permanently.

I can do other flanges to order but I'll need a little help with working out the flange position. If someone can get some pics of a T3 held up to the stock manifold that would assist me in getting started. I imagine it would need to be bolted at an angle for clearance so if I can see roughly how it needs to be I can work out a drawing.

So would I! Hard to find someone who will run back to back dyno pulls though. The runner design is intended to reflect the exhaust pulses directly into the turbo from each cylinder to gain the fastest possible rise in boost. If my thinking is correct you should gain some bottom end as well as free flow at the higher revs. I'll post some more video later so you can see all the components + the lightening I have done on the insides.
