Is the any support? Other than clutch, is there anything that can be done to strengthen the transmission? Maybe a direct replacement?

www.protegegarage.com sells an upgraded 3rd and 5th gear, as well as strengthened differentials.

Search on here for "GTX gear" and you'll find some stuff too.

hope that helps. As for a direct replacement transmission, I don't think so.

you could also cryo treat certain parts of the drive train for added strength

Is 3rd, 5th, and the Lsd the main weak spots? i thouhjt the complete tranny was a POS in general?

Those gears tend to be the ones people wreck from pushing too much power it seems. Aside from weak shifter forks and such it doesn't seem like a bad tranny to me.

Anyone thought it might be a good idea to have a trans with the stronger gears and a welded LSD for sale? Hello vendors? How much would that be worth, anyone?

Agreed, how can one create the INSANE hp/trq we are capable of and not have full aftermarket trans support.

So what mods do you have that you are so concerned about the trans? The diff is a given, set aside some $$ for that and a cluth and go from there. The gearset can be replaced later when that is an issue. I'm sure more than one person has been pissed when it broke with a credit card in hand and ready to order a full built trans and nothing is available. That's what happened to me, I ordered the Quaife, mounts and a clutch.

Just registered (though I have browsed the forums before) to ask almost exactly this question, though mine is a little more pressing. Last saturday, my tranny went to hell at 112k miles (don't ask), and my car was towed to my mechanic, who i trust implicitly. After days of trying what he could, he found that a new transmission was the only option. He's having trouble finding one, though, and I'm wondering (knowing how the tranny isn't great in MSP's) if there is any option for a complete transmission that's an upgrade from stock. Please at least tell me that there's a place to go for a new tranny that isn't mazda itself.

you can get tansmissions from a few different places but as of now the only real upgrades are the 3rd and 5th gears (strengthened) and a welded LSD or a quife LSD. If you need that new transmission i may be able to help out shoot me an email or PM

PS find out if it is just the LSD because if you weren't making huge power than your gears and forks are most likely ok and the LSD is probably just fine(finished), and those are not as expensive as a part!

Yeah what exactly did you do to your trans that you NEED a new one, did the LSD bust or did you mess up the gears? See if you can find out what happened and fix it as there really isn't a replacement trans available for us. Just the regular Pro trans and thats nopt an LSD trans.

My mechanic is going to take the transmission out for the third time, today, and see if he can find the exact problem. I have a feeling it's the LSD but who knows. What happened was that I clutched in to go around a turn, slowly let the clutch out as usual, then nothing, then some grinding. I immediately pulled over and put it into first, tried feathering it a bit to get it going. It lurched forward a little bit, then ground some more, then nothing again, as though I were in neutral. So yeah, guess I'll find out exactly what it is within the next day or two.
