I am due for an oil change on my 2002 P5 and am wondering if it is worth switching to synthetic. I live in NS so it can get cold here in the winter and am wondering if it will make any difference in gas mileage, etc...

I am sure there is a thread just on this topic somewhere but I thought I would just throw it out there...

so...what do you guys think?

yeah just go synthetic, just to be safe, its not that much more, maybe a few dollars.

I use Mobil 1 and I have noticed an increase in fuel economy since the switch.

ok...so can anyone reccommend a certain brand or type. I mean, I just have my P5 for normal driving..no racing or anything like that. But I am in an area with for seasons.

Any suggestions?

so when you go in for the oil change... do you give them the bottle of synthetic oil so they dont use thier own???

... go in for oil change? blasphemy!

but yeah.. I don't see why they'd refuse. They'll probably charge you less since you're supplying the oil. I'd recommend ordering some Mazda 626 V6 filters (higher capacity than Protege filters).. OEM quality for the win :)

ok...so what weight of oil should I get for the P5?

Like I said, I am very new to all stuff involving cars, so I don;t want to screw anything up. Someone said use MOBIL 1 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE, and what weight do I get?

Thanks!

5w30 or 10w30 is what the manual calls for. 5w30 has more additives, and can keep it's viscosity at a lower temperature than 10w30. That being said, 10w30 is fine down to like some ridiculously low temp (like -40C) and 5w30 to like.. -45C. Check your Owner's Manual, that's where I saw the graphs showing which weight to use at which temperatures. I use 10w30 all year round without issue, and my car sees lots of cold.
