This was mine before I sold it to be able to pay for the P5. Its a 2001 Kawaski ZR-7S. I am still pissed about selling it........I plan on getting a new bike this summer. It was a good comuter bike, not so much sport, but comfy enough for the longer rides.

Its a dirt bike that is street legal.....not an enduro but close. alot more zip in them than the enduro type.

Pros: you can change out to dirt tires. They are lighter than a regular street bike. they cost less in insurance than a street bike.

Cons: they dont look as nice. they dont go as fast.

I am not lookin for speed on a bike......I got mine^^ up to around 130mph and that was scary enough not to do that again. Just the tought of goin down goin that speed is too scary.

I miss having a bike. I'd like to get either an enduro (the BMW one is pretty sweet) or a nice Buehl or Triumph. One of my friends at work, she and her hubby race their GSX-Rs down in Florida and Alabama - she keeps sending me motorcycle trader links to used GSX-Rs. :p

Keep the bike pics coming! :)

I've got four bikes currently, I'll see if I can scan the pics I have (none recent, all on film). For the record, they are:

1984 Honda VF750F Interceptor
1985 Honda VF500F Interceptor (former racebike)
1985 Yamaha RZ500
1987 Honda 1000 Hurricane

Yeah, I like Hondas (just like I like Mazdas for cars).

is there alot of maintenence for these bikes?
these are what i do, theyre not have to's as with anything, others will disagree

Tires last on average 3000-5000 miles.
Average $100 for front $170 for rear (what I buy, Pirelli Diablo Corsa)
Changing the oil every 3000
Adjust tension in chain as needed (full on and off throttle needs more attention)
Lubricate chain say every 500 miles (I use chain wax)
Gas mileage ranges from 30 to 50+
Some need valves adjusted more then others
Some carbs need synced more then others
Maintenance depends on how much you change intake/exhaust, programming, ect.
Bikes air/fuel needs adjusted more then cars when changing exhaust and intakes
Depends on how rough you are with them as well. If you like doing wheelies and slamming the front down, you’ll go threw fork seals.
You’ll want to keep a good track record for the maintenance performed
Keep things oiled and lubed as needed
Doing over XXX mph on the bike and in the car are 2 different things.
Bad tire maintenance means a bad day in the car or real bad day on the bike
Just things off the top of my head

I've never owned or driven a motorcycle but I've always been interested in them...Especially from a performance stand point...What sort of bikes are the "top dawgs" these days...The only ones I'm familiar with are the Hayabusa, GSXR and Ninja...I'd like to know the strong points of each of these bikes (Hayabusa, GSXR and Ninja etc)..

If anyone would like to post a brief description...I'd appreciate it...Thanks!

PS...Keep posting those (pics)guys...

Big boy top dawgs:
Kawasaki ZX-14
GSXR1300 (Hayabusa)

Liter bike bad boys:
ZX-10
GSXR 1000
CBR 1000rr
Yamaha R1

In the middle long time bad-ass track weapon/stunt bike
GSXR 750

Middlewieghts:
Yamaha R6
Kawasaki ZX6
Honda CBR 600rr
GSXR 600rr
Triumph 675

All the above will get you to speed very quickly. Some quicker (alot quicker) than others. I reccomend a used beater bike no more than 600cc (EX500, Suzuki makes a 500 as well) for your first bike. Mistakes happen and plastic is very expensive. Somebody fill in the gaps if I left any top machines out.

Your list is pretty complete as far as the popular models go. You could also delve into the European bikes (Ducati, Aprilia, MV Augusta) but they are expensive and not as popular.

As for beginner bikes I agree, you can add the Suzuki SV650 and new Kawi 650 twin (don't remember the exact designation off-hand). There are also some good older models (like my 500 Interceptor) that won't intimidate a newb but will still have enough fun factor once they are experienced. Of course you can always modify (I have a CBR600F2 complete front and rear wheel on mine now) to improve upon things.

Cool...Thanks for the info guys (2thumbs)

I'l take your advice about the newb bikes if I ever get one...I've got a couple more questions...

What are the main differences in performance and feel between the Kawasaki ZX-14 & Hayabusa?

Also...I've got the same question but for Euro Vs Japanese...Do people go euro mostly for the exclusivity/image factor?

I love the look of the Hayabusa and some of the Ducatis :D

Someone may correct me if I am wrong, but as they are considered 'sport bikes' there are some differences.

The ZX-14 and Hayabusa are the largest, but they are in a different class then the 1,000's, 750's and 600's (Yamaha, GSXR and Kawasaki). They are going to be longer and handle differently (not as well).

The best handling bikes are going to be the R's, GSXr's and the Kawasaki. Also keep in mind that most people will never get the full benifit out of anyone of those bike on the street, especially the hayabusa, 1000's and even the 750 to an extent.

Euro bikes are a whole different thing. They will cost you more. Usually deisgned a little different (ducati for instance uses a hydralic clutch instead of a cable clutch), but they do have a distinct look.

I also agree that the best way to go is a used 600cc or smaller. Plastic is expensive (trust me I just rebuilt my GSXR) and you will drop it at some point, even if its just in the driveway.

Like everthing else it all comes down to personal preference. I like the gsxr becuase it is a little larger than the Yamaha's but my best friends hates them and loves the R's. Definitly go used and get used to riding then look for the bike you want.

just my 2 cents.....

So how did you like the supermoto? I love the way they look! I have been looking at a 04 Kawasaki Z1000 myself latley. I just love the Street Fighter look. The Z1000 stock has approximately 125hp.......thats almost, if not as much as my p5!!

chiefmg
01-05-2007, 01:30 PM
I would term bikes like the ZX-14, Hayabusa, Honda CBR1100XX as GT (Gran Touring) bikes. They have probably 8/10s of the curvy road performance of the pure sportbikes, but are more comfortable due to seating position (especially for any passengers). Of course their straight line speed is good as well (can you say squashed eyeballs?).

Antoine, if you are in the land of Nippon I would recommend looking into the excellent 400 cc bikes they have there. A lot would depend upon your size, but they are small and light so unintimidating for a person starting out. You could also go with a 250. I have always wanted one of Honda's VF400Fs (like a mini-RC30).

For those who want to get into bikes but are unsure, I highly recommend taking a MSF Beginner Biker course. Usually held at a local college, they can provide a bike and helmet if you don't have one. I have taken their advanced course twice and it is great. In some states if you have a completion certificate you can get your license without taking the state test. They will give you the proper knowledge to get started in a low-key environment.

I actually owned 2 KTM Dukes. I had one and traded it on a Ducati 900sp. After about 2 years I was bored with the Ducati and found another Duke. I loved both of those things. I had Keihin flatslide carbs and full Big Gun exhaust on both of them and they were crazy fast. 0-100mph they were much faster than my Ducati and most of the 600cc sportbikes. The flatslide carbs made the throttle very touchy so it was harder to ride wheelies and such, but mountain carving doesn't give you much of a chance to do that anyway. It takes a few rides to get used to the high seating position, but once you learn how far over you can actually lean one on sticky tires the high seat makes a lot of sense. I lowsided the one in the picture into a ditch in the mountains at about 50mph and it never even stopped running...just jumped back on it and took off again.

I would definately recomend a class like this. I took a class locally, it cost $300 for 18 hours of instruction and driving training. You use thier bike, they provide the helmet and they take you to the state driving test. It was pretty easy, that way I could get my license without buying/borrowing a bike.

In NC you don't have to take the riding test if you've done the MSF course. Insurance companies usually cut discounts as well.

how much fun would it be to have a conv. plus a bike.......man I would do it!!

I second that motion. . .my best friend owns a '98 Kawi ZX6R and a '66 Mustang convertible.

While I do have the convertible (MX-5), always dreamed of owning a Kawi.

Always been a Team Green fan. . .ever since the GPZ series in the '80s.

Sigh. . .maybe one day. . .

In the meantime, please keep posting all those awesome bike pics! Gives me something to dream about. :)

Nice bikes fella's!!

I had dirtbikes when I was younger...Started with a TTR-125, then went to a YZ-85. From there, I went to a real bike in a YZ-125. After having that for a few years, I sold it in spring of '06 so I could pay off my new baby....2006 Yamaha YZF-R6!!

She's only got a few things done to her...I spent all the money I had on her, nothing left for many mods...

Mods so far include; Integrated tail light, fender eliminator, frame sliders, flushmount blinkers, and Pazzo shorty levers...Next on the list is a trailer so I can get to some track days. After that is Akrapovic exhaust...

Here's some pics...The first is of my YZ-125, others are of my R6. First R6 pic is before mods......

YAMAHA FOR LIFE!

Yeah I really like the looks of the Buell.....but the cost was too high and the hp was lacking....really like the hole exhaust underneath the bike. Also the fact that the oil and gas is located in the frame is pretty sweet.

I am trying to get a good deal on a 04 Zk right now: $5500. For the price, 120 or so hp is pretty nice.

Honestly, i don't know how people ride those bikes for long distances (the repli-racers). I got my bike because I plan to go long distances. I'm planning to ride to FL this spring/summer; for example, and there's no way I could/would do that on something like a 636, R6, or RR. Eeeeephhh dat y0!

About the Buell not having enough HP. 90 something HP at the crank is fine for me, that's like 75 at the wheel or something like that, plus I'm also making about 50 or 56 lb/ft of torque doesn't sound like much but on a 400lb bike its a lot ;). Anyway, I'm still faster than 80 or 90% of the cars on the road.

That was no fusia. That crap was Barbie Doll Pink. And, it had to go!! Rims were powdercoated pink, striping all over it was pink. I was laughed at when I bought it, but, i took it straight into the garage and got to work. Noone is laughing now. Noone can beleive it is 16 years old! Everyone thinks it's at least a 2000. I just smile and tell them it's a 91 and watch thier jaw drop.

Oh, and, some of the mods on it.
I swapped out the stock headlight for an 8000K HID system, and pulled the rear turnsignals and brakelight for a full LED integrated system.

Supermotards are hands down the most fun bike I've ever ridden or owned. I worked for dealerships representing almost every major manufacturer including KTM and Ducati (Kawasaki being the one dealer I never worked for) so I've ridden just about every style bike from the last 10 years. Hands down the KTM Duke was the most fun bike I have ever ridden and mine was a 1997 model. The newer ones are even better. They aren't very comfortable for long rides, but they can put an immediate smile on your face with just the twist of the wrist or pull on the bars.

Once I get more time and money would love to do some more third world adventure touring on vacation... but maybe I've personally reached the point where the thrill of bikes in the everyday world is not worth it. The possibility of dying or paralysis, and the inconvenience but absolute necessity (unless you're just nuts) to wear full gear....

I'd rather have a fast Miata I can drive to work on a Monday morning and not have to wear all that gear. Which is in the works...

I like naked bikes, and especially, I like older, classic styling on bikes. Think old Norton, Guzzi, Triumph's Bonneville, and so on. Not a big fan of cruisers, myself, mainly because of the way they ride, and how disconnected I feel when I do ride them. *shrugs*

I should snap a shot of my whole garage with all four bikes in it. It's pretty crazy looking! In all, we have:

I've been riding for almost 23 years. 14 years street. I started out riding motorcross (twin rear shocks and bench seats thank you!) Stock header pipes on the S1 with a V&H slip on. I eventually went with a KT Components full header. Talk about loud!

First off, I am not anti-european as far as motorcycles go. I've had a few from Italy, Germany, Austria, and Great Britain. I'd think really hard about staying away from Aprilia and even Ducati unless you plan to only ride a few 1000 miles a year. Aprilias are very hard to get parts for. They are even harder to find dealers to service them if you have a warranty claim. If you have a local Aprilia dealer, check to make sure they are going to stay an Aprilia dealer. Aprilia's market share has been taking hits every year.

Ducatis to me are topshelf parts, soulful engines, beautiful in appearance but steaming piles. I have 4 friends that have purchased new ducatis in the last 2 years. (a 749, monster 620, 800 supersort, and a Multistrada) each bike has been back to the dealer several times. Electrical, mechanical...you name it. I've ridden riding buddies on the back of my bike to get them home more times than I care to. I hate Ducati because it makes me give dudes rides on my bike. (ghey)

Actually, Aprilia is getting much better about that since they've been taken over or partnered or whatever they are with piaggio. Their parts network is only getting better. I think their future is really really bright.

I hope you're right. I like Aprilia. I was reading market share growth for 2005/2006 and projected for 2007 and they tanked for 05 and 06. 07's projected -18%. We lost both Aprilia dealers in my area.

Yeah, the Duc is definately a hottie.

We have it in the basement with the R6...I'm pretty sure the R6 tries to rape the Duc everynight... who wouldn't?

And let me tell ya...if that thing isn't a head turner in itself... you should see the "almost-accidents" when she (yes, she) is riding that thing.

Nothing sexier than a hot chick on a hot bike. haha..

Anywho- Elise's boyfriend's, bestfriend's, dad (jesus) has a body shop.. so she got it repainted...then just regular crap that the other chick didn't do.. the brakes were so bad the calipers' pistions were stuck...throttle would stick...

From those who bikes and know the values its almost just worth coughing up the extra few grand and getting one that is brand new. Im looking at getting a new r6. MY local dealer has a 06 for 8200 plus crate and setup and it has a $350 exhaust already on it. Total would be about 8700 without taxes. They also have some used r6's in stock. an 02 r6 with approximately 16k goes for $6200. Looking at how good they hold value its kind of stupid to spend 6200 for a used bike with 16k on the clock. Whats your opinion's everyone who had bought new or even used for that matter.

My only issue is that it is hard to find a used thats a decent price and decent low miles. You've only ridden for a season and you are looking at(almost) brand new R6's?! (boom06) I would say take whatever you have now to a track, and get in some real riding time, then look at an R6 after that. Unless you already have. Don't be like all the squids and just buy a great track bike to ride around town because you feel cool. (stoned) The R6 is a beautiful machine though. Safe riding!

I have raced motocross for about 4 years and thats about all the fun for me. I do however enjoy a nice machine that performs well like most people here. I wouldn't be getting the r6 just to say i ride a r6. i am not sure what i am going to do yet. just getting some ideas because i would like to upgrade to something newer with less miles and a little more agile. I have road a road bike before but this one i have now was my 1st one. Good advice all. i don't really want to get new but in a way it just makes sense.

I would tend to suggest waiting more than a season to buy a brand new bike.

Just because you have the experience of one season under your belt doesn't mean anything...

A season doesn't really define a large chunk of time when you live in WI...maybe a couple months.

You're gonna do what you wanna do-- I just don't suggest it.

Hey now...I just don't want to see anything bad happen to you or a beautiful new bike.

A lot of time when people "upgrade" they think it's going to be smooth sailing...and forget that-like cars- every one handles differently.

I've seen people who have ridden for years, try out a buddies bike and loop it, low side it, or any other horrible thing that can happen when you borrow someone else's bike.

Just remember, if you do go R6... the throttle is more sensitive/responsive.

Just ride a new bike like it's your first time.

Don't wanna' hear about you on the evening news ;)

I'd like to solicite opinions from y'all.

I'm planning to purchase a new bike, soonish. Before I get to the bikes, I know they couldn't be further apart in terms of mission, but whatever.

I'm considering a 2006 FJR1300 or a 06-07 SV650 (i know). Anyway, the bike will primarily be used for commuting to and from work. I do plan on pretty much making it my primary mode of transportation. I also plan to start doing more touring/traveling. I also want the bike to be fun - obviously. Anyway, if anyone has their .02 to input, I'll appreciate it.

SwampAss
03-27-2007, 10:02 AM
I had an 05 FJR and an 00 SV650. Both are awesome, but for totally different reasons.

For traveling and touring, you won't beat the FJR. For slicing up twisty backroads and bang for the buck, you won't beat the SV. If you want something that kinda halves the distance between the two, look into the FZ1. Sounds like it might be the best of both worlds and a fair compromise between the two. I have ridden both the first and 2nd gen bikes. AWESOME rides.

SwampAss
03-27-2007, 10:50 AM
anything can be ridden on 12-14 hour trips for some people, just as some people would get sore on a Goldwing after a 2 hour ride.

It's more about conditioning and preperation for a trip than it is the bike. As long as you aren't riding a supermoto or something along those lines, you'll be fine regardless. I've done almost 800 miles in a day and wasn't all too bad. I've had some days where 300 miles totally kicked my ass.

Yea...and those V4 motors will run forever. I've seen the older VFRs well into the 70,000-80,000 mile range with no mechanical problems. Most of them don't get that high due to crashes and such. I used to work for a Honda dealer and I never saw a VFR come in for anything other than oil changes and tires.

SLA...you might want to resize that pic...It's a bit large!

Woah...Funky engine and placement...is that a 2cylinder mounted "horizontally"..? What kind of engine/tranny is that?

it's a twin set up in a similar fashion to a moto guzzi. With the caveat that this one is water cooled. It's a 5 speed. It's a V twin. Just sideways

So, i'm interested in getting a bike. For mhy first one, I want something slow so I don't kill myself. I'm thinking of a 250cc and used. I don't want to feel bad if I drop it.

But before I can get a bike, I have to pay off one of my credit cards...unless I can find one for $100 or less.

Just got it today. Sorry for the phone pic, I haven't had a chance to get any good ones yet.

Oooo. Sexy :)

I'm definately an advocate for starting on 250'sor 500's.... not only are the great learning bikes, but they have a good resale because many others are looking for starter bikes!

Orrrr if you find a beat up 600 (with just cosmetic damage) sometimes that works too. Just make sure the engine is good enough that you're not gonna die trying to ride the thing.

Good luck! Hope you get one soon!!

wow, that nightster looks REALLY uncomfortable with the forward foot pegs and clip ons. It sure does look cool tho :)

SwampAss

them forward controls ain't forward! THe sporty has always been a standard bike to me anyway. The softie and other models are cruisers. Cept for the FLHR..that's a tourer

Here is a vid of the nightster. About 4 1/2 minutes. Stock, no mufflers, slip-on mufflers, and a small clip of my roommate riding with the clip-ons. I have since adjusted them and the riding position is not so far forward

And the controls are mid-controls, not forwards. The riding postion really is not that bad. I can easily commute one hour, ready for more.

I suggest droppin the price a little, to what you bought it for...

It sits kinda high IMO..

But hell, it's always good to make some money off it

LEXi73

ya i am not really concerned on getting full asking price...its just the time of the year to sell.

I figure if i ask that i will get about what i paid or a little under...and then i'm happy and the buyer feels like he is getting a better deal because i moved on the price a bit.

The bites are coming in decent so we will see how it goes...i'm not in a huge rush to get it gone because until then i can still ride it every now and then :)

Scanned copy of an old pic of my 500 Interceptor when I was racing. I don't have any others of my bikes with me, I'll try to take some when I get home in a couple of months.
