I've got a nice bonus check coming next week, and I plan on spendin about a grand on parts.
My current mods are;
Drop in K&N
Turbohoses SMIC
EBC Brakes
EBC Pads
Autometer Boost Gauge
Greddy TT
Enkie 18 x 7 EVO5's w/ Toyo Proxes
I was thinking about going ahead and purchaing EMS since I'm gonna have to get it in the long run anyways.
That, or maybe exhaust, hard pipes, AEM WB, motor mounts, vac lines. Not all of them, couldn't do that with a grand.
For a grand..Hmmm.
I would get the dsm-afc for now until you really need a standalone.
either a custom 3'' tb exhaust or a 3'' dp.

I'd get the hiboost.com FMIC kit for the MSP.. its 900 bucks and from what i've read it provides mad HP! for the price. That or a turbo back exhaust.. but you'd get more from the FMIC .. not to mention it would look sick seeing that huge bad boy in the grill. :)

Will the dsm-afc and exhuast make a big diff?
yes, the dsm afc will smooth things out. The exhaust will make a diff. The least amount of backpressure is the best.
I would first, if it were me. I would worry about the exhaust work first. Dp, exhaust. Then Fmic/smic, then afc to help incorporate all the mods.

Well I can get the Vibrant S- back, and the dsm-afc for about what I want to spend. Allready got the smic.
Now how about the install?
I looked at airflow logistics and couldn't find any pics of the install. I'm not one to go splicing into and electrical system unless I know exactly what I'm doing.

I've read somewhere on these forms a dude had a turbo back exhaust with hiboost FMIC and was pushing something like 200whp.. i think he had a boost controler as well.. but still not bad for 3 basic bolt on mods.

Yes, EMS and exhaust are some of the best mods for the car.

Best bang for your buck/safety for your buck. Those are good supporting mods to have esp when upping the boost.

Exhaust should be the next thing you get. Also if you launch the car hard at all I would suggest motor mounts. Even if you only get the front.

Hey dude.. i believe you got your vertic... Exhaust, FMIC, EMS. I'd create a poll and advise everyone to to start on that and make a list of what mods you can get for about 1k. And just to help ya out some more.... i'm sure the guys wouldn't mind. we could post a link to that product so you can see the amount/site ect...
i would probably go with exhuast and or EMS along with your SMIC before upgrading to a FMIC....

You've got basically all the mods I want, really just minus EMS. How's yours running?
Knox Joe
01-03-2007, 01:14 PM
Okie dokie, a little update.
I bought the Perrin exhaust system, and some Espelir springs. What else do
I need?
I can't find where to buy the "MIL Eliminator" I keep reading about. Anyone know where? Are there any other options?
Second, what type of EMS should I go with?
I have heard mixed reviews on Unichip, and I don't like that there is no one in my state to tune it. So it's pretty much out of the question.
I have heard mixed review on the MPI, so...
Which way do I go?
I decided I'm not going forged, just want to do everything for reliability I can and to get some decent perfromance. I'll stay AT THE MOST 10 psi, and really want a streetable car, and I've heard stand alone engine management is not very good for a "street" car. I drive 90% mountainous backroads, so huge HP is not an issue.
So full stand alone or piggyback?
Or should I get the Airflow Logistics AFC?
I really only want at the most 250hp.
Edit: Oh yeah, WB , clutch, and Oil Pan is at the top of my list right now.(ughdance)

I would strongly suggest fuel control to maximize what you've already done to the car...the msp has a crappy fuel curve to begin with and with those mods its only going to get worse...obviously I'm going to plug my product, as many have praised, but regardless if you get my afc, a mpi, or a unichip you'll notice a big difference in performance and driveability. As far as installs pics and such, there are 2 or 3 FAQs on here about AFC installs by fellow tuners as well as pics on our website, We also include very specific instructions with the afc, which should also be pdf files on the website(if they aren't let me know b/c they should be up there). If you want feel free to pm or email me and I can give you honest advise on what/how you should go with your mods. Ask anyone on here and they'll tell you I have no problem telling someone our AFC isn't for them if I feel their mods are above what we designed the AFC to handle. I'm a fellow tuner first and foremost and and vendor second to that...

I personally can vouch for the AFC making a huge difference in overall performance. My mods in chronlogical order went CAI, Hi-Boost FMIC, Custom Mid-Pipe Exhaust, AFC. If I were to do it again, I would have done the Exhaust before the FMIC as the gains with the FMIC were not significant until I did the exhaust. The AFC then just turned the MSP into an entirely different car. I haven't even had the car Dyno tuned yet and only running the stock SuperMap and the performance increase was definitely significant. You will not be disappointed with the purchase...

Well just found out I got another salary increase and am creeping up on 6 figures, so the MSP may be gone in lieu of a more "luxurious" car, ie. Benz, Beemer, Lexus, Infinity, etc.
I figure if i make the money to afford something better, then why spend money on the MSP?
I got this car before my new career, so right now it's not up to par with how much I make.
My only concern is that if I get a new car it won't handle like an MSP (is that good or bad?? FF + high HP sucks!!!) and I'll end up getting a boat car.

I'm just really thinking about getting away from FF cars.(omg)
I used to have a 5 liter Mustang, a Camaro, and an old T-bird Super Coupe, and I really like FR better. The MSP is great until you start to push for a little more, then the front plows, where I can get a FR to come around. Granted, you can make the MSP oversteer, but it's not really able to be progressively done so.
I just WANT something a little more. I don't need a sedan, and I don't need a daily driver, so I'm really leaning towards a M3, Z3, or Z4.
Like I said though, we'll find out Saturday wether I can swing something a bit more pricey (mmmm....MS6).

I hear you on the salary deal, I easily clear 6 figures here in NY and can definitely afford a nicer car, but all that nicer car will do is sit at the trainstation all day while I work in Manhattan. If I drove my car more often I would own the new Acura TL-S

Yeah but you live in NY. 6 figures is not the same there as here in Knoxville, TN. LOL no offense.
I went to Manhattan once to DJ at a couple of nightclubs...
What, $15 dollars for a Jack & coke??!?!?!?
$340 a night for a little ass hotel room!!!??!!?!
$35 entrees at dinner!!!!???!!!
$25 cab ride for a couple miles!!!!???!?!?!?
Who can afford to live there comfortably that doesn't make at least $100,000?

I mean i love my MSP, but I want a platform for bigger things. Maybe I'll let the GF keep the MSP, and trade her car in since it's paid off for a dwn. pymnt. on something "new to me."
I've been so confused on what to do...
Oh, and get this, the owner just called me a minute ago, and told me since the accountants are doing all kinds of crazy stuff for the new year, Ihave to wait a week for my raise!!!!!

After looking at cars, and weighing my options, I have decided to keep the MSP.
Now though, we'll have twins.
I'm trading my GF's car in for a Titanium Mazdaspeed Miata!!!!!
We've decided we're just going to share both (don't worry we've been together 6 yrs), and mod both. It would still be cheaper than me getting one more expensive car.
The MSM is $15,500 w/ 51k one owner miles. Good deal?
Getting her shipped from AL to Tn via CarMax. I never realized what good deals CarMax actually had. They're also giving us more than I thought for the GF's car (just paid it off!!!) so I'm super stoked.

If you are talking about a mil eliminator just do the spark plug non-fouler trick. You can click on my sig if you want to look at a couple more W/B on JDM Sam's site.
orng1
01-21-2007, 04:42 AM
The spark plug non fouler is a great option, there is no need to cut or modify the wires. You just drill it out a bit and plug it in line from the O2 bung and the sensor. The AEM is good if your going to mount it in a pillar pod. I think it's the only W/B that's made that way.

I have no tools, so I wouldn't be doing the work, but I'll see what the shop thinks about the non fouler idea.

I've been contemplating getting the FMIC for a while now, and after I priced hard pipes at $375, or even the extra $150 for silicone, it looked to be about the same price for a front mount. Plus, I'm still getting heatsoak on my SMIC.
So, I'm going front mount.
The owner of my company is coming next Monday and everytime he has came I've gotten a couple thousand for a bonus, so I should be able to buy the FMIC next week sometime.
I may just buy a core and have the shop fab up some piping.

Ya i guess thats a cheaper route.. but i've heard you get an impressive 25hp out of hiboost's kit. I read on here one of the best mods for the MSP is the FMIC, cork sport cat back, CAI, and downpipe.. to finish it all off get a better manifold.. but that all right there is well into the 2-4k mark. But you'd be extreamly happy with your setup.

To be installed;
HiBoost FMIC
Injen Intake
Installed;
Turbo Hoses SMIC
K&N Drop-In
Perrin Exhaust
Greddy TT
NGK Plugs
Autometer Boost Gauge
Aem Wideband o2 Gauge
Spark Plug Non-Fouler
DSM AFC V1
Kartboy Shifter Bushings
Kartboy Exhaust Hangers
Espelir Springs
18 x 7.5 Enkie Evo5's

So now what???
I'm thinking J&S Safeguard, and a new clutch (mines been slipping).
Maybe motor mounts? Intake Mani?

OMG, dude, my car is a whole new machine, but that was coupled with the exhaust at the same time, so those are two big upgrades at the same time.

awesome, cant wait to get my mpi installed. so how exactly do you change maps and what not, does it come with one of those handy little controlers like the ones apex'i make?

Wow yeah you've got quite a list there. Seing as your clutch is starting to go I'd replace that along with the motor mounts. The rear is a lot easier to replace once the trans is out anyways and if your still on the stock LSD weld that up and you should be good.

what map do u run with the afc?
Knox Joe
03-01-2007, 06:15 PM
I'm running the supermap.
Keep in mind, the intake and fmic are not installed.
I have a Turbo Hoses SMIC, and a K&N drop in right now. The other pieces are being shipped.

yea i think mine is running better now..but i dont think the afc is on. my power wire fuse blew and i think my afc is hooked up to the same wire as the gauges and turbo timer..so they all dont work. saturday im gonna be installing the rest of my parts and rewiring all the gauges and shit. hopefully my old ass laptop will run the R4software, my other laptop broke still waiting for it to come back from best buy.

Okay, I'm really considering the J&S, so I don't go blowing my motor.
But I also want the ProtegeGarage transmission upgrade kit.
I can't decide.

My GF decided for me. We bought the J&S, so I don't blow my wad.

u know that the J and S doesnt control timing right? its a safegaurd. you really should think about something that can control A/F and timing.

I read this and thought it did;
The J&S Safeguard is the only knock protection that counts. No other knock prevention system comes even remotely close in quality and power. With individual cylinder retard and re-advancement, knock window focus, MAF limiting, O2 Clamping, and simply the most accurate and advanced knock detection algorithms this is the best insurance you can buy for your motors

BTW how do you like the Profec B?
I was thinking of buying one just to make sure I don't go over 10lbs.

i am under the impression that when the J and S detects detonation, it will pull timing to keep the engine from blowing up. it is defintely not an engine management system. you cannot tune teh timing map with it.

hmm, i cant seem to get it set up just right. ive had it for awhile but i just gave up. many people get it to where spike is under a pound and it holds whatever boost they want. i know others have difficulties with it as well. i believe part of the problem is my mechanical boost gauge and greddy boost gauge are not dead on. makes tuning it a little difficult. if i could go back, i would have gotten one of the nice dual stage mbc's. its definintely a nice unit and i may just not be "tuning" it properly.

I'm not going full out, I just want bolt-ons and didn't really think I wanted full ems.
After this, the transmission, MM, and oil pan I'm done. I'll tune the AFC conservativley at 10psi (guess I'll get a dual stage MBC) and be done. No boom. Fun, safe, reliable.
Oh, was the gain from the intake mani noticeable?

dont get me wrong, quite a few people have gotten the ebc too work. im not one of them tho and i feel as if it is overkill for low boost application.

One thing that has me not wanting to get the J&S is that noone really blows this motor from detonation from less than 10psi with supporting mods. It simply seems to happen from more power than the rods can handle, or oil starvation, or some dipshit riding up-hill in 5th @ 2500rpm with 4 people in the car, WOT (BOOM)

I'm gonna run 10 psi on one stage, and 8 on the other, really just getting the J&S for 10psi and spikes. I may go to 12psi down the line after a few more mods.
Oh, BTW, I beat a modded WRX on 640 west last night. woot woot!!!!

Another bonus coming up, so more money to get this project finalized.
I ended up taking the MBC off because I didn't like the spiking. now spking 9 holding 7.5-8 off the wastegate.
Just ordered some vacuum lines. So what's next?
I am thinking, intake, injectors, meth injection, NOS intercooler sprayer, fuel pump, and an oil pan.
Am I missing anything?
This set up should allow me to get some decent, reliable, and safe power with stock internals I would think.
