first thing to do was just to clean things up.

The front suspension.
Take 280zx struts, remove spring purch, grind down smooth as you an, weld on new spring perch, paint, put in specificly
tuned tokico struts, add ground controls, and lastly add 240sx camber plates and you have custom coil overs from a 280zx for a 510.

ehh, coming from a long ownership of many nissans, i suggest going with anything but the truck engine (notcool) i personally would do a blacktop SR or even a CA. But either way the five an dime is a great part of Nissan history. I hope you make it a beast :)

awesome...I love the 510s...

But like said above...I had a nissan altima w/ the ka24de...i'd go w/ an SR engine over that...

I was originally going to go with the SR, but the KA is just as good a motor as the sr. It can safely handle 350-400 whp with good tuning. Will have more torque then the SR. And will be plenty enough power for a 2200lbs car. If you want to see what the KA is capabile of check out www.turbo240.com

yup. I'm on the ka-t forums. Yes I have the DE, but the sohc loves being boost also. but I happier with the DE.

well here is what I did to the rear cross member. For a little back ground when you lower a 510 more then an inch it screws up the suspentions geometry in the back of the car. There are a few options out there I chose the option of cuting off the old a arm mounts and making new ones that are an inch higher and alot for camber and toe adjustment. Well here the pics.

This is what we started with.

Yes what he said.
the RX-3 was a rotary Mazda built between 1971 -1978
the Datsun 510 was sold between 1968 - and 198?, but the goo years are the PL510s which were built between 1968-1973.

I know where one is with fiberglass body parts.. orange but man.. i really don't wanna deal with another project "nightmare" and anything pre-1980 in Canada sometimes neeeds more metal then a whole new car lol.

ca18 isn't a bad motor. I would take it over an SR20. but I'll go with the KA24. 2.4 liter iron block and likes boost.

don't get me wrong I LOVE L series motors. But hell the price it would take to build a L20, with header, cam, side drafts and higher compression. I could put in a mild KA24 and get more power. I'm a KA24 > SR20 kinda guy. (first)

tophat performance makes some of the best ka motors out there. i bought one built from them for my altima... and i was fast! (dont make fun of me for my old altima) sure the name "altima" is gay but that car after that motor was sick

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to keep that in mind when I want to go all out. right now I just want to run a stock motor. Since that should be enough for a 2200lbs car.

Starting the next fix. The painted one was suppose to go on the car, but when I was pressing the bushing out I accidently bent the left ear on it. I ended up getting a used one and we are cutting off the good ear and putting it on my arm. Luckily my friend knows how to tig weld and we are putting some extra bracing in. Here is the start. probably going to finish up this weekend.

in the eyes of MANY,the only engine for a 510 is a L20,nothing else.

you gonna have fun finding the subaru LSD for a decent price.they have been going for over $400 lately.

to much power will completly ruin a 510.
the most a 510 should be running to make it untouchable on a track would be in the low 200 area.

yeah,I know this is america where every only cares about BIG numbers, instead of a well balenced car.

Thats the great things about opinions everybody is entitled to their own. Why would the l20 be only engine for the 510? The ka24 is still a nissan motor at least and has more power stock then most highly modified l20s. And good thing I'm not looking for a subaru LSD, R200s fit in with little modification. And r180s fit in with no modifications.

I plan for around 300hp, with a proper suspension and brakes it can still be a good track car. I am not going to ruin my 510.

I have been in literaly dosens of 510's,and have driven a lot of engine options, and in doing so I have seen why the L20 realy is the engine for it.
it doesn't take much, and to have a really well balenced L20 doens't cost near the price of a K or SR.

you ever hear of a guy named Troy Ermish in Fremont Ca.
you should call him,and talk 510,not many people know more about them,or build more race 510's.

BTW,my quote earlier was from the owner of the 510 club.

good luck on the build.

To get good power out of the L series you need to rebuild the whole motor (cam, higher compression), and a good sidedraft set up puts you near the $1000 mark just for carbs and manifold. KA are cheap and like I said a modified L series is barely the power of a stock KA.

Yes I know Troy Ermish in Fremont Ca. I have talked to him many times. In fact those coil overs you see, I bought the ground controls from him (same as my rear coil overs that I sold later, but plan to buy new ones from him soon) But Troy is not the ONLY professional racer that races and deals with 510s, there are more people out there. Troy himself does has done a few KA swaps (your right I should go with the l20 thats what all the real races do)

I am happy that you have riden and driven in many 510s. But unless you yourself have done the build up and research into them, please stop lecturing me. I have done my research and have choosen what I want for MY 510. I am not some young dumb punk. And unless you have any thing to really add to this thread instead of bashing my choices I have made for a car please leave it. (I'm trying to be very polite here and its really hard)

yeah,I am no dumb punk either.
I just finished building a autocross 510.
short runner intake/dual makuni sidedrafts
long header/Ermish
11/1 comp
P&P head/custom cam
R160 LSD/datsun stub axles.
full roll cage
280 front conversion(sus.)/240 struts.
custom rad.
full custom wiring harness.
bubble flares.

and this is just one.

BTW,the R200 takes a lot more to fit then you think.
it defnately fits, but you have to cut into your spare tire well, and make sure you get the right nose,it's offered in a shortnose, and long nose.

Glad to hear you have helped put one together. You may have just been discussing, but your comments were more lecturing then discussing.

Luckily Cutting and patching a whole in the spare tire area isn't big deal after cutting a welding up the coil overs and the rear cross member. I know about the long nose and short nose. Datsport is actually working on making the short nose work, and looking at it looks like it only needs some bracing and it should work. And the r200 is strong as hell. I plan to try and get a short nose r200 from one of my 240 friends and see if I can make it work since there are so many around that have lsds and they are a little cheaper the subbie r160s.

I like discussing cars and parts, but like I said I didn't take your comments as discussing, they looked more like lecturing not discussing.

but as far discussing: i would love to talk about what was done to the autocross dime you worked on. Which r160 are you running? Is it running a subbie r160? What 240 struts is he using and mind if I ask why. Right now I just plan on running 280zx struts, tokico blues and with the ground controls. Is he runing 240sx stuff? Why did you guys modify the wiring? And what radiator is he running? I know TSR has a radiator package but its $950 dollars (shocked). I was thinking of running the rabbit radiator since so many people have done it and seem to be happy with it.

I apoogize for earlier.

the Rad is a Be-cool rabbit Rad.w4e used a regular Rabbit rad for awhile, but unfortunatly it's not much better then stock.
to make it fit you just need a couple 90 hoses, and a 1 3/4 to 1 1/2 adapter for the bottom.
as for the struts,it was Troys idea,it's a lot easier to get the car lower, much lower with these.

as for the R200,I really don't see the need for this.
I have seen cars in the 400HP range ABUSE the R160 with no issues,I would only use a R200 if you were going to go drag,or make this a track only high HP car.
oh,and we use the subbie R160,if you wanted somthing more stout, you can stick a quiefe in your stocker.

not all your fault I may have taken it wrong.

So whats a Be-cool rabbit Rad.w4e I may have to look into that. got to keep a 2.4l cool.

I may have to call Troy about that. I got my 280zx tokico struts and ground controls from him. but that should get me as low as I need to go since I plan to run 15s on the car. Cant go to low or I wont be able to turn, since I'm still torn if I want to do flares or not.

I'll have to keep that in mind about the r160. Since I'm half broke I figured I could kee the 160 until I broke it. I though the quiafe for the stock 160 was EXPENSIVE as hell.

What did you guys do to the subbie 160. I though you had to modify the stock axles to get them to work?

the Be-cool is a brand of alluminum Rad,you can get them through Jegs or Summintracing.

as for the R160,all you have to do is take of the subbie stub axles, and stick on the 510 ones,it takes about 2 minutes, and yes,the Quafie is DAMN expensive, but when it's in a R160 it will react/outperform,and take more abuse then a R200,and theres the fact that it literaly bolts in.

your best bet is to just get a R160 LSD from a subbie. price/performance/ease of install you really can't beat it.

OH MAN. I just found this.
I have wanted an SR or KA powered 510 since I was 13. My Dad has owned 5 510's in the last 30 years. Two two doors (one a bluebird, still has the grill), one 4 door, and two wagons. Still has the Red '71 wagon.
I'l be following this one closely.

And why the hell would anyone living past the 90's want an L20 when they could have a modern, fuel injected, DOHC motor? Please. L20's were cool in 1985.

Thanks for the compliment guys. Yes I was actually going to update this in a few days.

The L20 is an AWESOME motor. This is going to be a fun car, if I ever build another dime it will have a highly built L20 with side drafts in it. I LOVE the sound of side drafts full opened up.

Alien is right though, hopefully the next couple weeks I will be picking up a strong running '96 KA24DE with a header and intake, transmission, ecu, wiring harness and clutch. Hopefully seeing another friend soon to get my fuel pump. And going to swap in my modified rear cross member this weekend. I can't wait to work on her.

gbean - Does your dad still have the bluebird or any more parts from it. I would love to see the grill, depending on which one it is I might be interested in trying to buy it.

As for the RB motor. The ONLY way I would do that is to a wagon, to get any 6 cylnder into a dime you have to cut the fire wall up a little. Plus that just adds to much weight here is an example of a RB in a dime

anywho, this really got me excited to get a 510 soon. I always thought the KA would be a great route, and it can handle LOADS of power. It is so hard to find a decent Dime in Nor Cal for a reasonable price.

Lol, I can understand why he wouldn't want to. Its getting harder and harder to find good deals on dimes. Either they are too rusted out or they are too fixed up and too expensive. I got lucky on my two door, guy needed to get rid of it and was a pot head so I got it for $800. Arrgh I want one so bad right now.
There is also a badass blue 510 here that has a VG30DETT in , makes about 450 HP

I got a freebie '73 datsun pickup a couple months ago. It has the 1600cc engine, L16? Anyway, it sat outside, not running, since 1985. I replaced the fuel pump, hoses, gave it a tune up and the thing fired right up, runs like a champ. Ive always liked old datsuns, especially 510s and after getting this little ranch wagon going with such little effort Im definately impressed with them. Theres a good chance Ill probably try and pick up a 510 one of these years.

The wifey is my problem as well :). I already have the protege5, a '67 el camino, the datsun 620, and my work vehicle, an '89 ford superduty. She does not see the point in me getting any new vehicles. Everything i have is either restored or modded enough for the most part. i like having the datsun, but it is never going to be a street vehicle again. I dont have the title to it, the original owners are dead. The sons just wanted it off the property so they gave it to someone who gave it to me. Im just using it to haul and run stuff around the farm. I think she is starting to understand that I need to have a project to work on in my free time or i go nuts, so we'll see.;)

So here is a picture of the 510 I will hopefuly be buying from my old boss in a few weeks. It has an L20 with Solex Sidedrafts. I am not sure what has been done wit hte suspension, but you can tell from the pictures that it needs the rear cross member slotted. I am not sure how involved that is. If it doesnt already have them, I will put power brakes in, prolly with bigger vented front discs and a rear disc conversion. Anyone have experience with that?

oh and has anyone seen this? The most badass 510 ever built, too bad it has a carb'd rotory, but hey, that is Mazda Powered....

Oh ya I've been looking at bryans 510 years before I got mine.

That dime looks pretty good.

As for the suspension well it all depends on what you want to do. There are quite a few options out there. 200sx (80's models) and 280zx struts swap over once you cut off the springs and weld on coil overs like I did. Which in turn will let you run their brakes. Rear brakes you will need ot get caliper brackets but you can find some at http://www.datsuns.com/as for the rear crossmember, slotting it isn't really hard, but not really all that reccomended. What I did does take a lot of work, but if you go to http://dimequarterly.tierranet.com/ (http://www.dimequartertly.com) and sign up for the news letter and get some of the older issues you will be good to go. make sure to check out www.the510realm.com (http://www.the510realm.com)

sweet. Thats cool it already has 280 struts. If you check out the dime quarterly they have instructions how to make rear brackets for 82-83 280 brakes. Or check out datsuns.com they have brackets you can order for 200sx or maxima rear brakes.

I was originally going with the SR, but they I jumped ship and staying loyal to the KA :). If you do go SR make sure you get everything, motor/tranny/harness/ecu/ignitor/maf. The last parts can be expensive. Luckly they have found ways to make z32 maf and ignitors work, but they are not that much cheaper.

Its kind of a big favor he is doing me, I would not be comfortable asking twice.

Oh its cool man I was just playin around.

As for whats a good year for SR, I would probably go with the black top s13 motor check out http://www.heavythrottle.com/ they have good info about the motors. But if I remember correctly most people go with the s13 if your going with big horse power since then you don't have to worry about the variable time on the s14 and s15 motors. Don't forget the rear end though, the stock r160 will NOT hold up to any real power.

GBean
04-18-2007, 10:02 AM

GBean

And the Red and Black Top s13 engines look like they have the same specs?
I whink I would shoot or about 300 hp through mroe boost, throttle body, porting, etc. What do you think of cams available for this engine?

freekwonder
04-18-2007, 11:33 AM
I've heard there are some slight differences between the red and black top. But the main thing is the black tops are usually newer motors with less mileage.

as for the rear end, ya the r200, r180s and actually subaru r160s, older subbie diffs work best if you are not converting to cv axles. but the drive shaft shop is now selling a cv conversion for the 510 so you can use newer wrx r160s and the possibly the sti r180.

thanks bro, they are 15x7 0 offset, the same size as the konigs. Sadly I got the wheels from a guy that had them on his Honda Prelude, I guess the prelude and the accord have the same bolt pattern as the dime.

I'm getting some bolts today so I can get the front suspension on today. it was a good thing I swapped wheels. found out the driver side rear has no brakes. So looks like I have to do the rear brake upgrade sooner then I wanted. I did find a guy selling a motor for $200. I'll see what happens.

Just motor/ecu. I already have a S13 KA tranny. Just need to get wiring harness, maf, flywheel/cluth and the motor is good. Atleast now I can work on the engine/tranny mounts and get it all bolted up.

I found it on craiglist, its coming from Nashville being sent to KC, should be here today. Yes sucks about the valve cover, but their craiglist auction had a few pictures of it so it should be all good. I have another KA motor sitting in pieces, figure I can drive the car with this motor until I can build y other motor up with parts from www.turbo240.com they have a kit they sell that has all the motor parts you need to have a reliable 600 horsepower motor. Not that I will ever push 600 out of the car.

300 miles on the rebuilt L18 Weber DGV, resonator removed, original seats are GREAT. 2nd OWNER!
Electronic ignition, dont remember what type, but not alison.
Orange shag carpet that needs to go. 4SPD :( Needs a 5 bad.)
NO RUST! Best looking floorboards I have ever seen on a 510.
used to be orange, then blue, now white.

What it needs....
New front suspension/steering bushings, and a better motor IMO. SR20DET FO SHO!
240Z struts w coilovers, bigger wheels, slotted cross member.

Oh man I may buy this next week at a steal, and the guy has never even listed it for sale! He wants to sell to me cuz he can come see it! He says he just doesnt drive it anymore. He has owned it since the year I was Born. 1980. So original, so clean

I posted a want ad on dimequarterly and I got a call yesterday fro a guy not 5 miles from my place.

LOOK WHAT I FOUND!

Damn that looks really good. I would jump all over that if I could. If you want I'm in Missouri, but I have a 5 speed and driveshaft sitting around. The guy before me used it paired with a l20 for scca stuff in the area. SR20 isn't a bad motor. I wouldn't do 240z struts though. They are not that good and if I remember correctly the camber is to far off. The best upgrades are either the 280zx struts or 200sx (early 80s V6 stuff), cut the springs off and put coil overs on or the 510 springs.

Joe - She is still in the garage, She should actually be rolling here soon. HOPEFULLY.

And what is the difference between the 280ZX and the 200sx struts? Height wise and so....

What kind of 5 speed?

Honestly I'm not sure the different between the struts. I went with 280zx strust since they were easy to get. I hear the 200sx are suppose to be better since they don't add as much positive camber. But caber plates fix that up.

As for the 5 speed. I'm honestly not sure. I know its from a Z, but thats about it. It came with the car and the kid didn't know anything about it except that it was used for a racing Z car.

Do you have to cut a hole in the tunnel to accomodate the shifter on this one?

I love the rewinds, I was planning to get a set until I found the mesh wheels. Becareful with the 15x7 0 offset. You may have to flare the car. The pictures a few pages back with the black wheels, those are 15x7 0 offset, You might be able to make it in the rear, but with stock suspension I'm not sure you will make it up front. If you switch to the 280zx struts you will be ok to run 0 offset with out flares.

I've been seeing a lot of dimes show up on ebay also. Ones that are in the same condition as mine going for a couple thousand. I got mine for below a thousand. But I did some playing around with mine this weekend. This is how much your are going to stick out with 15x7s 0offset and 205 tires on. Going to have to go with flares.

freekwonder
06-20-2007, 11:50 AM
I believe 240s had 180s in them. 180s are a good upgrade for the dimes, but I' m not sure how easy it will be to find a 180 with an LSD. You can also check out subaru though, they use the same r160 as the datsun, just different axles. The driveshaft shop has CV axle conversion for the datsun so you could use an r160 from a newer WRX with an lsd, or maybe an r180 from the STI. R200 from the ZX cars are always a good upgrade also, just HEAVY.

GBean
06-21-2007, 03:27 AM
I have read on the510realm that the STI rear end has some crazy output shafts and would be really hard to swap.
My neighbor with the 71 240Z doing a chevy LS1 Swap has the R200, it is HUGE. way too big for a 510 or a Z IMO. It must weigh 100 pounds.
Good to know the r180 was in the 240, I am sure there are some factory LSD's out there.

Ya the sti one is really hard, i got a hook up on driveshaft shop stuff so in the future I'll probably go with a wrx r160 with LSD.
The wheels are Enkie Z mesh wheels. Can't remember what they came on though, even got the Z car center caps.

I have a connection at Drive-Line Service of Santa Rosa, and they will custom splice the axles to fit anything I want for $ < cheap. My concerns are actual housing fit, and power loss from having an "overkill" rear end in it.
I think a WRX R160 LSD will be perfect for an SR20DET.

I wish I had $$ for an allowance. I hate my mortgage. But hey, I own a house in one of the most expensive places to live in the country! Yay! (yupnope)

I need a second job to finance this if I cant find a donor car cheap.
There is an all Nissan Wrecker in Sacramento who I am gonna try to get in good with. I could get a "jobber" price through my old boss too..........

It is just so exciting to think about 3.5 liters of DOHC goodness... I cant contain myself.
Maybe I am biting off a ton more than I can chew. I will just cut it into overpriced sushi size pieces and take it one inari roll at a time.

I haven't had much time/money to work on the car since I've been getting ready to leave country for a year for my new job.

But I took the valve cover and oil pan off the motor. She isn't beautiful, but she looks good. I was going to try and drop her in before I left, but my engine hoist is dead. Hopefully over the next year I can update the thread with parts I've been buying and get her running when I get back.

lol. We will see, still got to pay bills and my wife quit work so she could concentrate on school, and I have my own student loans to pay. So HOPEFULLY I should have around $6000 to spend when I get back. Looking at

Radiator/fans
rear coilovers
new rear control arms (mine are screwed up)
Some carbon fiber parts
New tires
I'm contemplating getting front coil overs/brakes from Datsport and rear brakes from Datsport, but I'm not sure yet.

just make the coilovers yourself with the ground control kit and some 280ZX struts and brakes, paint them pretty and whatever else.
Save yourself the cash on the datsport stuff. the only thing I have seen them make that I like is the steering box brace. There was one one ebay last week.

As for the rear brakes, get the rear disc bracket from DAMB engineering, and mount up some Maxima rear discs. I think the e-brake linkage still works with those as well with a minor modification.
Rear coilovers? I dont know too much about them, except that they are EXPENSIVE.

I already have 280zx front struts/brakes. They are on the front page. I'm going to get some rear coil overs from Troy Ermish. I've got the DQ issue with the instructions on who to make the rear brackets for the 280 brakes. And my friend has the tools, equipment, know how to help me with it.

They are at the bottom of the list because if I have the cash after I get her running, they will be my 'BLING' parts. lol.

Wow just found this thread - I love the 510. Looks like a great project.

We had one in the late '70's when nobody had japanese cars, and that's what I learned to drive on. Compared to american cars of the day, they were way nimble.

Great to see.

The Datsport stuff is super nice. I personally reccomend the steering box brace. by steering flex was horrible, and after I got one I thought I put in a steering rack.

Those brakes are pretty flippin killer tooo.
I wouldnt get the CV axles, unless you plan on getting more than 400Hp outta that KA. The stockers are supposed to be really strong. What I would do is get a WRX R180 rear end and throw that in there. (dont know what your rear end is already....)

freekwonder
11-01-2008, 03:00 AM
That's why I was going to switch to CVs, I want to get the subbie rear end. The WRX has the r160, the STI is the 180.

I don't ever plan to push that much power, but I do plan to track her a lot and I would feel a little safer with better axles.

I forgot about the steering box brace. I'll have to pick that up since I have the cash.

Right now I have the stock r160.

Probably going to get my hands on some 280zx rear control arms and get the rear end up on the wheels and rolling correctly. Then get the front suspension on her. As soon as I can get an engine hoist I'll test fit the motor/tranny.

Coil Overs should be here in 5-10 days. Bought them from Top motoring. Trying to decide what to buy now. May hit up the junk yard this weekend and see if I can fund some 280zx control arms. May get clutch and flywheel so I can test fit my ka.

GBean
03-02-2009, 10:33 PM
How are you gonna make 280ZX control arms fit? Are you talking the fronts or the rears? I am pretty sure the rears are totally different.
OH and how much were the coilovers?

freekwonder
03-03-2009, 12:16 AM
Coilovers were about $580 shipped. $560 for the CO and $20.

From the reading I have done, 280zx control arms fit the problem is they add to much toe in, You can modify the mounts a bit, but stock mounting locations work.

GBean
03-03-2009, 12:23 AM
Crazy I have never heard that. What is the advantage to installing them then?

freekwonder
03-03-2009, 10:23 AM
I didn't know either until a week ago. Main thing is the disc brakes already being installed. Can't really thing of to many others. lol.

Disadvantages though are more toe in, no spring cup so you HAVE to run coil overs, and strut mount is on the top of the strut so it is 4" inches higher, but from what I hear you can flip the a-arms left/right and lower the mount.

Well got 90% of the parts for the front suspension (need to tie rods, ball joints) but I wanted to kind of test fit everything so I could get the rear suspension on.

Front end consites of

280zx struts with welded on ground controls.
Techno toy tuning T/C rods
240sx camber plates
Modified lower control arms for adjustability.

I do have the old front struts with brakes sitting in the engine compartment. Together they are probably still 1/3 the weight of a KA24 and transmission.
