Well I signed on this site to see if I could gain some knowledge about these cars.. Because a purchase of one might be in my near future and I was curious as to what kind of aftermarket support they have.. I might be purchasing an 03.5 Mazdaspeed protege laser blue mica that has these mods, apex motorsports 2.5 inch catless downpipe, 3 inch catback apexi N1 exhaust, joe p boost controller, forge motorsports bov.. Currently I have a galant vr4 that doesnt run, but is about to be sold next week (Im probably going to buy another one as well, lol)..

First off welcome to the forums, and if you do end up getting an msp you shouldn't be dissapointed. It's a great all around car(with really weak conn rods :)), that will put a smile on your face. As far as aftermarket support goes, it's there but it isn't cheap(not a big market for these cars).

Welcome to the boards...for aftermarket I would check out protegegarage.com and also *************.com Also, the search option will give you a lot of results.

Im too lazy to search.. lol :) I test drove one yesterday (the one mentioned above) and it was pretty damn sad up top.. But when I looked under the hood at the size of the turbo, I understood.. lol Ive read that the only bolt on turbo is the gt28rs.. Is this true? Im not wanting any spectacular out of the car, just something that wont get beat by the majority of the cars out there (daily driver).. I'll have the galant for the weekend.. :)

Edit: Thanks for the links..

Also, does anyone make any cams for these engines? Im sure that would help out ALOT on top end..

Before you go bolting on a bigger turbo you are going to want to do a few things. The rods are pretty weak and also the LSD is pretty weak and could stand to be replaced.

How much boost can the stock rods handle before its bye bye time? Also how much boost is the turbo capable of before its just blowing hot air..

well FWIW an intercooler can help alot with the topend pull. Mine made a world of difference in the top of the rev range. Its still not a highway beast by any means, lol, but ya. Lots of people usually stick at around 10psi with the stock rods, but thats usually only safe with full supporting mods (exhuast, intake, i/c, EMS). Although, there have certainly been people that run higher than that without problems. The turbo pretty much runs out at 15psi.

yea so someone offered me their msp with 27k on it.. for 16k + my vr4.. It was really hard not to laugh at them.. Because the only things the car has done to it is a FMIC, tinted, factory kenwood, 3in turboback, sunroof, 3 gauge pod with boost gauge, carbon fiber hood, new bfggoodwrich G-force tires, eibach sportlines, tokico hp blues.. said it has 5k + in mods as well.. and that kbb rated it at 17.5k.. I told him I was paying that much for basically the same car with 18k more miles taxes and all.. The guy must have thought I was stupid or something.. For 17k I would get a WRX..

If you ever plan to trade the car in.. dont do it.. It will actually lower the trade in value cost..

Sunroof is not a good thing for such a stiff car as the MSP.

I have driven another MSP with a sunroof and it didn't affect it too much but then again I'm only 6' but the MSP does have a good amount of space compared to other cars.

Mutmatt

the head room definately FEELS bigger... the fact that i have light coming from the top and it just makes the summer, windows down, sunroof open, driving 55 down the road feel that much better :)
