if you abuse it then you will have problems. i have 45 thousand miles in 3 years and zero problems with my transmission. i have also have mods so in teh end its how you treat the car.

I've had the tranny go due to a bad fork at 40,000 km, they rebuilt it, but it grinded quite a bit,at 100,000 km took it in for 3rd gear grinding, totally fixed...200 km later the plug fell out of the tranny on the highway and i ran out of fluid apparently...was towed to the dealership where they put fluid in it....all gears grinded, sounded like a steel drum when you tapped the shifter...blew 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear 5,000 km later while driving in rush hour traffic..drove to a different dealership in 5th.....had tranny rebuilt....tranny made wierd noises though...6 months later mazda canada put a brand new tranny in the car for me... Point of this long winded story...Unless the tranny has a defect to begin with, or you beat the hell out of it, or you are unfortunate enough to take it to the wrong dealership(there are some good ones) or you have crazy mods, the tranny should be fine, my new ones good so far with 50,000 km on it

Mine had the 3rd gear shift fork go out. Replaced by dealership under warranty. It was probably my fault, because sometimes if i wasn't careful i'd grind it into 3rd. Definitely don't do that anymore. I guess it also could've been the fault of the previous owner, as well. Just take it carefully and it should last you fine.
