Those people have no clue what they are talkinga bout. First of all almost all games are run @ 1080p on the 360 if your t.v. can handle it. Second of all, I myself run GTA IV on the PS3 in 1080p.

+100000. I bought 2 cables when I got my ps3 and have had no problems since. There is no way I am spending $100-300 for some solid gold platinum plated superconducting flux holding electronic POS. Unless you are really serious about you entertainment system (being on a AV forum then on this forum) amazon.com is the way to go.

Not true - the 40GB model DOES HAVE built-in wifi. Check Sonystyle.com if there are questions on what the different models offer.
Another cool fact about sonystyle - they have the Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB bundle available for preorder already - same price as the impossible to find current 80GB model without the game or dualshock3, or even $100 cheaper if you apply for a SonyStyle credit card.

I didn't really care for Burnout much. I really enjoyed Burnout 3 and the new Burnout is really a lot like it except it is a totally open map. The open map concept turned me off -- I don't have the time to dedicate to it to memorize the map, which is basically what you have to do to enjoy the game.

What? That's the game's fault, not the console. Some games have an update, others don't. Hot Shots Gold has been out for months and hasn't had any updates for it. Plus if you don't want to download the update you don't have to (afterall, you don't HAVE to have an online connection).
Plenty of good games too. Sorry your friend doesn't have any.

There are a few good ones, but the library is regrettably small. I don't know why Sony wasn't courting more developers, but there have been numerous reports of difficulties in designing for the cell processor, and the overall architecture of the system. I am willing to be patient, as I have tons of games to play on my 360 and can watch blu-ray movies on my beautiful TV. I have had a PS3 since Christmas 06, and I only own two games: resistance and motorstorm. Both I found to be just OK. Echochrome looks awesome, but I haven't bought it yet, and I want to get Drakes Fortune and Ratchet and Clank, but that will wait, too. There's always MGS4 and GTA4, if you like those kinds of games. Soon will be the new Gran Turismo, but I can't say that I'll buy it, as I have Forza 2, Grid, PGR4 to play through.

The lineup completely sucks ass. I was talking to PG Ken about the system and he told me he hasn't touched his in months. He told me all about the patches and all kinds of other crappy stuff about the system. I definitely think Sony dropped the ball with this console. And I have always been a Sony guy. I may just buy a blueray dvd player instead.

The PS3 has been out for almost 2 years now, and there's still the equivalent of the 360's launch lineup for decent games out. The 360 launch line up wasn't even that good.
No way - I think you have selective memory on that. The 360 launch lineup was pretty much crap and for the first 6 months it was mostly reviewers complaining that it wasn't much of a step up from the prior gen. It took quite a while for the 360 to get a decent selection of quality out there.
All in all the PS3 lineup right now is quite good. You have 2 games total - not really enough to comment on how much quality is out there IMO.

Well, it's obviously your decision but my recommendation is to actually PLAY some of the games before passing judgement. Especially when your main source of info was Ken. Ken is an admitted Nintendo nut. When you don't even turn your PS3 on more than once a month of course it's going to seem like it needs constant updating.
Even if you just want Blu-ray, the PS3 is your best (value) option there too. Plus MGS4 is officially the greatest game ever released on a console. It has COMPLETELY blown me away.

i don't make up my opinions from a used napkin I found on the ground. I read something like 5 different gaming magazines, not to mention multiple online sources.
Good (80 or higher on metacritic.com) retail games ONLY on the PS3: MGS4 (94) (just came out this week), Drake's Fortune (88), Resistance (86), Ratchet and Clank (89), Motorstorm (82 - my opinion is more like 70), Warhawk (84).
Overall, I'm disappointed with Sony and the PS3. Keep in mind I own a PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS3, so i'm not a fanboy by any means.
If you have a 360, there's almost no reason (gaming-wise) to get a PS3 yet. Good reason to get one: Blu-Ray, but there are now cheaper blu-ray players available. Unless you're a huge MGS fan.
To be clear, I wasn't saying the 360 launch line-up is as good as quality as these games, but that they are similar in quantity. To be fair, I bought 3 or 4 or so of the 360 launch titles. To date, I've only bought 2 games TOTAL for the PS3, and I want to buy 2 more (plus Echochrome - download only).

I see what you're saying but still the fact remains you own 2 games and how many others have you even played? Not enough to form an accurate opinion if you ask me. Going off of reviews these days isn't that much different than getting your opinion from a used napkin. Hell look at sites like gametrailers.com -- they gave Halo a 9.6 for story, Assassin's Creed a 9.7 for story, and MGS4 an 8.7 for story!! Seriously????
I do agree that generally if you own the 360 there's not much reason to own the PS3, and vice versa for the most part unless you want blu-ray movies. But I will say that the PS3's lineup right now after 1.5 years far surpasses what the 360 had after that amount of time. There is an excellent selection already for PS3 - Call of Duty 4, GT:Prologue, MGS4, Folklore, Warhawk, Hot Shots Golf, F1 Championship Edition, Super Stardust, Oblivian, Ratchet and Clank, Drake's Fortune, Unreal Tourney 3, GTA4, Resistance, etc...even Lair is pretty good with the control patched now and PixelJunk Monster is good for the $10 it costs. Hell I'd challenge anyone to even NAME that many quality titles from the 360's first year and a half. Even harder if you demand the type of variety over primarily first person shooters.

Yeah the local Wal-Mart here sold out right away too. They got 12 in and don't know when they're get the next shipment. Apparently the 80GB bundle is still using the larger CELL chipset as opposed to the 65nm chip in the 40Gig, so that may limit the quantities some too. I wanted to pick up a 2nd one for the bedroom since it was a nice price and I wanted MGS4 anyway, but oh well. Maybe there will be a price cut upcoming shortly anyway.

That's why I referred to metacritic - it averages all the reviews out there, which is a pretty reliable method.
There's a reason I only own 2 games, you know. I don't buy every game to prove whether or not the critics are right/wrong. I buy only the ones that truly interest me; and receive high enough ratings that would justify dropping the cash to buy them. That's a rather reasonable approach.
But I will say that the PS3's lineup right now after 1.5 years far surpasses what the 360 had after that amount of time. Without doing the research on that, yet, I'd have to disagree. I owned several more games than that at the 1.5 yr point. I'm not sure it's valid to count the games that can be had on any platform, but as we've both stated, it's our opinions here.
Having owned the 360 since launch, and a PS3 since shortly after launch (easy to do direct comparison), I am simply disappointed with the PS3. I have been completely thrilled and satisfied with the 360, on the other hand.
PSN needs some serious help, too. I'm a Home beta tester, WTF is up with that anyways? Another way to waste time on your PS3 that isn't actually playing games...

I own a PS3 but only two games. (Guitar Hero 3 and the complete Star Wars Legos saga.) Clearly, I didn't buy it for gaming. (I have a PC for that... and no gaming console ever made can touch a well built PC.)
I did buy it for the Blu-ray player. Why buy a PS3 versus a regular player? Well, the number one reason is the PS3 is the only Blu-ray player that Sony is promising to be forward compatible with all the upcoming Blu-ray SW releases. Note:
"Excepting the LG-BH100, the LG=BH200, the PlayStation 3, and the Samsung BD-UP5000, Profile 1.0 players can not be upgraded to be Bonus View or BD-Live compliant. On December 17, 2007, the PlayStation 3 became Bonus View 1.1 compliant through PlayStation 3 System Software version 2.10. On March 24, 2008 Sony released the 2.20 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 which is compliant with Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, making it the first in the market to have it. The first BD Live titles (War and Saw IV) were released by Lionsgate in January 2008."
With a PS3, you are always going to be good to go with emerging Blu-Ray standards.

It really isn't debatable, it is just a matter of technology / hardware. The PS3 has hardware from late 2006. Is it good? Sure. Can it complete with today's PCs? No. There is a reason why a good gaming PC runs $2,000 - $3,000 dollars. If you want to argue the cost point... fine. It still doesn't change the facts that if you want a kick ass gaming machine, you have to go PC.

Not sure what you're asking here, so here's a little explanation. A question also: is your TV 720p, or 780p, or 768? HD resolutions are actually 1280x720, or 1920x1080 (technically 480p is/was considered HD, but not in common usage). There are two ways to discuss the numbers, in regard to actual TV physical display capability, or the signal being sent through the wires. Some TV's (one of mine) can handle a 1080p signal, but only display 720p because it's physical resolution (also called native resolution) is 1280x720p.
Further, a TV may be 1080 vertical resolution, but only be able to display 1080i, not 1080p. The "i" stands for interlaced meaning every time the screen refreshes it's only updating half the screen via every other line. One time it's updating odd numbered lines (1,3,5...) and the next refresh it's the even numbered (2,4,6...). The "p" stands for progressive and means that all lines are updated every time. The reason there is a difference is because of the amount of information that needs to be processed. If you actually do the math, 1280x720p=921,600 pixels every time the screen refreshes. 1920x1080p=1,965,600 pixels (over double the amount of information). 1920x1080i is the same as (1920x1080)/2=982,800 pixels, now only slightly more than 720p.
That's why you only see 720p and 1080i over cable/satellite/antenna for HD, but BluRay/HDDVD can spit out 1080p. That's a lot of data to send over the satellite or cable. Even then, each of those HD channels are always compressed, often terribly so.
Another issue is that a lot of TVs, because of manufacturing processes, actually have resolutions like 768 vertical. They make large sheets and cut them down to each panel, so they often choose odd sizes to maximize their production yield. This isn't as common today, as people get smarter about HD in general.

as slim as the PS3's library is right now, there are tons of great games on the PS2 that are worth playing. Do they look terrible if they are not upscaled?

There was a game for PC called Viper Racing back in 2000 or 2001 I think. This game had the best AI and damage modeling I have ever seen in a racing game even to this day. Cars avoided you if you came at them, and the damage model was so detailed! It was made by Sierra. I don't know if any of you ever played it, but surely they could do something as good these days.

Thats almost a deal-breaker for me. I love Gran Turismo for its "realism" and MASSIVE library of real world license cars but the fact that there is no damage modeling and the AI is dumb as a stump totally pulls me out of the game.
There is no consequence for pin-balling and ricocheting of other cars, they mostly all follow the same line and seem to not be aware of your presence on the track. There is no penalty for slamming into a wall at 100 mph.
Honestly, I'm starting to believe that Forza 2 and Grid (heck even the burnout series for arcade purposes) are superior games. GT5 seems to have legacy flaws that should have been corrected a long time ago. Polyphony really needs to get it's act together. I am impressed by them finally going online, but thats been done by others for a while now.
I'd sacrifice 100 cars of the available list in exchange for damage modeling and good AI. Those 2 things would make GT truly the ultimate virtual racing experience.
shane02pro5
07-09-2008, 02:29 PM
You do get 5 sec penalties but usually if you get slammed from behind and hit someone in front of you you also get a penalty...also get one for going off the road. This isn't until like class a I think. Same goes for online.

Gran Turismo not having damage has never bothered me at all. Every damage model I've seen on any game has been unconvincing crap anyway. Honestly damage doesn't add much to the racing game IMO.

There will be damage in GT5. Prolouge also will have it and will have much better online play (you can make "group" races with invites) as an update that is supposed to come out in the fall. As far as the AI drivers, yes they still aren't too bright.
I bough Battlefield BC this weekend. The game is great. I think the online mode is better then COD4, since it has 12 v 12 online and the maps are bigger. The fact that you can destroy walls, cut down trees with your weapon and such is cool, but gets old pretty fast. The only downside is that the graphics and game play aren't as realistic as COD4, but it is a good game overall.

I beat GTA4. I didn't know it ended differently when you chose different things. Like whether or not to kill Darko? Your cousin's wedding? Man... THAT game has great damage. It's very much realistic in GTA4. Also, not every car just happens to be unlocked with the keys inside and no alarm... quite the opposite in fact. I like the Lexus/M3 style car that sounds like it has a turbo. Anyone find that little cherry yet? It's hidden in bushes and is always there when you return.
COD4. PHENOMINAL. End-o story.
GT5 Pro. Eh? Why pay 50 bucks for half a game? I may as well wait a little longer for the entire thing. Damage in GT5... no thanks. I wouldn't sacrifice cars available for this. This is why I play GT5 and not stupid games like NFS: Underground/Prostreet or anything like that. I love the MASSIVE selection of cars. I also personally love the sport-20 Protege they put in GT4. Looks like an MSP with no wing. BUT WTF! If you go back to GT4 and look at the Mazda 2, they have a color choice of Spicy Orange... go back to the Protege... NOPE!
Battlefield: BC... sorry, I am strictly COD. Unless I see B:BC played before me. Then I could possibly change.

08-09-2008, 01:23 PM
My beef isn't with the wireless aspect.. I just hate having to recharge controllers and whatnot.
I had a set of wireless controllers way back in the day for my SNES.. I hated them. When the batteries started to be exhausted, weird crap would happen in the game and the controller would cut in and out.
I'm sure technology has since improved, but I still like good ol' fashioned corded controllers.

The controllers are suprisingly good for the ps3. I orginaly thought that they would last a a few hours of playing, but they end up lasting a few days (in total about 12-16 hours). Charging is also pretty fast. I have 2 of them and just keep one in the charger and switch them out as needed. The only thing that is a problem is that they dont charge unless the ps3 is on.
seanmcsean
08-09-2008, 03:44 PM
Couldn't you just charge the controller with a laptop or PC since it is just a USB connection?
12-16 hours isn't bad.. I take it the controllers have a standard Lith Ion battery?
FL_PR5
08-09-2008, 06:30 PM
not sure. you might be able to, but don't know how your comp would read the controller once its plugged in. something to try though. well i think they make extender chords too for the controller. you can always plug in the controller when watching a movie or something or surfing the net and let it do its thing then go at it on COD or something.

For the controllers you can get any USB extension cable or any standard long cable from cheap places online if you really want corded. As far as charging goes, yes you can charge them with any standard USB charger -- my Garmin charger works on the controllers as does my laptop. bought civ. rev. and its not bad. annoying in some aspects with all the helpers always popping up. moved up to king mode and having 12 cities is quite annoying, after building everything it keeps asking what you would like to build even if you dont want to build anything at all. space age tech really isn't worth it. i thought if you built the space station you would discover another planet and start over or something, but no... you just win. i dunno its ok but not worth $60 in my opinion. its a good strategy game but after about an hour or two you're ready to quite cause it seems its so mundayne. reminds me of command and conquer, probably what urged me to buy it the most. that damn demo hooked me.

I really don't know what you mean when you ask about your options??? But to answer your questions about the new 80, yes the new 80 is exactly like the 40. Does not have backwards compatiblity, does not have any sd car slots, only has 2 usb ports and of course has the faster and cooler chipset. It is exactly like the 40 in every way just with double the memory.

08-27-2008, 09:20 PM
Yup, the Metal Gear bundle (assuming it was bundled all in 1 box and not some "custom" bundle done by a store) is the old chipset but has full backward compatibility. The new non-bundle 80GB has the new smaller chipset in it but only has PS1 backward compatibility (as all PS3s have) but no PS2 backward compat. Same goes for the Uncharted bundle as well as the upcoming 160GB model.

Hey hey.. Welcome to the club San Man.
I just got Madden 09 for my birfday. I'll probably end up playing it this week. It'll be tough. I have to get better at college hoops 2k8. I had a pretty intense game. St Joes vs Syracuse. I ended up winning by 1 point with a 3 at the buzzer.

That fkn sucks. I am glad I purchased the first 80gig. Even though I paid 200 more for what it cost now.

I have a PS2 question. My PS2 slimline has a buzzing noise that changes pitch while I jiggle the cables. It's only while watching DVD's. Any suggestions on how to get rid of that awful buzzing?
