Um, has anyone else's PS3 been collecting dust? (dunno) Almost a year in and I've only gotten three games; two of them were so short that it was insulting.
My PS2 is still getting waaaaaaaay more playtime than my PS3... Is anybody else experiencing this?

I'm a controller wh0l2e. Logitech, React, Wireless ones, Logitech wheels, guns; you can do so much more to get into games with the PS2 at this point. The PS2 has sooooooooo many controller options.
Plus it has many more options in regards to cheats/gamesaves (not that I do that often at all) but it's there.
I heart my PS2.
Anybody seen the actual game play demonstration for mgs4? That game is going to be f-ing sick! I can't wait!!!!

Why are the PS3 controller charger cords so darned short, and why doesn't the controller charge when the unit is off. You have to sit right up on the unit while playing to keep the controller on. ;(
Still, I can't friggin' wait for Heavenly Sword.

I use the usb cable from my camera, its alot longer. They also have a base that you can buy that plugs into the wall and will charge 4 controllers at one time.

It's standard USB. Either buy a longer cord or a USB extension cord or charge it on your computer when you're not playing.

Picked it up and played for half an hour or so (before I had to leave for the local Mazda Meet). The cg and voice acting are phenomenal. It plays just like Dynasty Warriors + God of War + Rise of the kasai. It's actually quite nice. It's not groundbreaking, gameplay-wise, but it's not bad. Probably a rental for most...
It was wierd to see all these Japanese-esque people speaking with pronounced British accents, but the voice acting is done so well, you stop noticing.
Character wise, Nariko could easily replace Lara Croft as the new "strong, female face of gaming"...

I got knee deep into Heavenly Sword over the weekend. It's an amazing game... o.O The production values, the voice acting, the characters, the script, the animation, the twing twang...
Two gripes, tho':
1.) No block button; as long as Nariko is not attacking, she'll block automatically. The only problem is that there are hundreds of soldiers onscreen, so you're always attacking... It takes discipline to stop hacking up people.
2.) The difficulty/length: I'm slow-playing it because I don't want it to end... I sat down for a couple of hours and was blowing through the game.
Overall, though, I am very extremely impressed with this game.

I am still deciding whether to get the PS3 or 360. I wrote a 6 page, MLA research paper on that very decision for a college class - and learned that the PS3 is superior, although it is going to take time for it to show - but I cannot decide. Without starting a brand war, what is your guys take so far, with the PS3 being out for awhile now? If you could go back, would you buy the 360 instead?

I wouldn't go back on my decision. The PS3 is superior from a technical standpoint and for the most part the same games will be coming out for both, so I figure might as well get the superior machine. And honestly the horrendous build quality of the 360 turns me off as well. I really want to play Forza2 but definitely not until they can make a console that actually works.

Same here. I read on IGN that GT 5 Prologue is supposed to be out in october as a demo. It also said that they were unsure if it would be a free download, or at some cost. Honestly if its like $10 for this demo, I will still get it cause for me GT is the essence of Playstation.

From an available games standpoint, the 360 wins hands down. It did have a year's head start. The build quality is atrocious. I'll be trading in for my 3rd unit in as many years... It skips, locks up, and overheats. You name it.
Forza 2 is a really good game. Not GREAT, but really good; a substantial improvement over the first game. GT4 still gets more playtime, though, and GT5 will stop the planet on it's axis.
Once the PS3 would get some more titles, it'll pwnz the console wars again.

I couldn't agree more. As I have found in my research, the 360 is basically as far as it can go right now - minus a few additives - and the PS3 has barely begun to scratch the surface. The problem I have found is that is essentially too expensive to produce for the PS3 and its 6 active processors, hence the lack of masses of first party games it. The summation of my research found that the 360 is fantastic for right now and the PS3 will be far superior for those willing to wait. The only other rough decision I have right now is that I am a huge Halo fan...past that, and the 360 having more established online play I am really leaning to the PS3

Yup, I'm dying for any GT action they can give us....I think it's definitely going to be a game that could not be done on any other console, period. I've been hearing rumors that GT Prologue actually is going to sell for somewhere between $20 to $40! $40 would definitely be painful for what's essentially a demo but if you do look at what's in prologue there is quite a bit of content there (40 cars, decent number of tracks, online races). But still $40 may just be too steep for me. Here's hoping it comes in closer to $20....which I believe is what the "prologue" for GT4 cost over in Europe before it was officially released.

In a recent Road and Track article, Kazunori Yamuachi (sp?) said that in GT1, creating one car was one man's work for one day. When GT3 came out, creating one car was one man's work for 30 days. With GT5, Kazunori said creating one car was one man's work for 180(!) days. That's half a year, f00'. That said, incorporating damage, like Forza 2, would require new, multiple models... The cars would take YEARS to create...
That said, GT5 will require a console with some SERIOUS processing power. o.O

Well, more details about GT:Prologue today. Looks like it'll be about $40 and coming later than I thought (Dec 2007).
US, September 19, 2007 - We tend to hear about new cars when looking at Gran Turismo, but the focus of Famitsu's latest update is on a new course. The Daytona International Speedway will be making its first appearance in the Gran Turismo series through Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the magazine reports. Players will be able to select from the oval course and road course variations of the track.
Also revealed in this week's Famitsu are first details on a demo download for Prologue. The demo will be available in Japan on 10/20. It will include the GT-R car and and the Suzuka Circuit.
As for the final release for the game, Famitsu lists 12/13 as the big date in Japan. Sony will make the title available both as a PlayStation Network download and as a packaged Blu-ray product. The Blu-ray version will cost 4,980 yen, up slightly from the 4,500 yen of the download.
That may seem a little steep for what is ultimately a sampler for next year's Gran Turismo 5, but Polyphony really is packing in the features here. The latest update from Famitsu reveals that Prologue will include a new GT.TV mode. This gallery lets you view car television programs from throughout the world, including BBC's Top Gear and Japan's Car Graphic TV. To view these programs, you'll have to pay about 200 yen per episode. Each program will have individual settings for viewing period.
Online play is going to be one of the big selling points for GT5 Prologue. As previously announced, the game will support 16 player online races, although producer Kazunori Yamauchi admitted to the magazine that he expects difficulties when reaching that maximum amount unless all players have speedy connections.
Unfortunately, Prologue will initially have some limitations to its online mode. On launch day, the game will support Arcade Free Battle mode only, where your opponents are chosen at random. Chat and friend list functionality will be added to the game via download at a later date. Yamauchi was unwilling to give a specific date.
We should be getting our latest look at GT5 Prologue at the Tokyo Game Show tomorrow. Stay tuned for a full report.

September 19, 2007 - Big shocker at today's Electronic Arts pre Tokyo Game Show press event. While playing a demo of Burnout Paradise, we felt something that we never thought we'd feel from a PS3 controller -- shake!
That's right, Burnout Paradise is the first rumble-equipped PS3 game we've ever played. Which made us think at the time, if the game is making the controller shake, the controller must be a new version of the Sixaxis!
In fact, the controller we were using to play the demo looked exactly like a standard Sixaxis, except that it had a sticker on the bottom that said "RUMBLE." It also felt notably heavier than the standard Sixaxis.
We presume this is a prototype of the PlayStation 3's new rumble controller, whatever it's going to be called.
The rumble itself felt around the level of PlayStation 2 rumble. We're not sure just yet if Sony is using any of that next generation technology Immersion has been talking about for the past few months.
A formal announcement is expected tomorrow at Kaz Hirai's keynote address.
As for the rest of the EA event, as well as details from today's Sony and Konami events, check back at IGNPS3 through the night.

Anybody have Rainbow 6 Vegas? I know its kind of old (but it came out way late for the PS3), but I have recently started playing again. I forgot how awesome the game is online. One thing I noticed is the graphics are alot better on a HD tv compared to the regular. I know it seems obvious, but some games have little difference between HD and a good regular tv (like the formula 1 game).
One more thing. Is it just me or are the graphics of old PS2 games WORSE on a HD tv then a regular one? I played NFL street recently and it seemed very "blocky".

But seriously, the PS3 does have some problems. Not hardware problems like the Xbox 360, but softwear and marketing problems. Every good game has been delays until now (COD 4 was the first good game not delayed for the PS3). But even now, not even a week after the game came out, COD 4 has network and server problems, which sometimes doesn't even let you play online. The thing is, I think sony has finally gotten the ball rolling now with all the good games comming out for the holidays. Make no mistake, the PS3 has way more potential then the Wii and 360, but currently they are not using it to there advantage. The pricing thing is kinda high, but if you think about, buying the PS3 just for the blueray player is cheaper then buying a regular blueray player.

Being a grown 35 year old non-ricer I never thought I would admit to buying a Need for Speed game but Pro Street is an awesome game!
Driving dynamics in the grip races are very GT4 comparable and the drag races are pretty cool too once you get the hang of it. Still haven't done much of the drifting yet due to Ridge Racer 7 killing the concept for me but I can see it being more realistic in the dynamics anyway.

I have NFS Pro and have to say, I like it alot more then carbon. I was hoping with all the hype it would be even more in depth and real, but then anything other then GT is not perfect for me. This is supposed to be more arcade like then simulator anyway. I just don't think you can go 200mph over a hill, jump 10 feet in the air land on another cars bumper, and drive away (confused). But I do like it that they made controlling the car more realistic, like the high speed races.
The new tuning steps are a love/hate thing. It is way over simplified, such as the aerodynamics. Just put all the tabs to 100% and you have the best settings, I don't even get why they have settings if there is only one correct setting. But the timing advance and turbo spool is kinda nice, but also not totally accurate (increasing timing all the way and having high boost wouldn't last long in real life (smash) ). The only thing thing I mess with is the wheel alignments (toe, caster, chamber) and suspension (shocks, springs, and roll bars).
Overall its a good game with good graphics, but if you thing you plan on setting your MS3 in the game and have it perform the same in real life, all I have to say is (rofl2).

I haven't had much chance to mess with all the settings but grip races and time attack is much better set to the hard setting (King I think?) it eliminates the assists and gives it the GT similated feel. I havn't figured out the drag set-up concept yet. I'm modded to like 475whp and can't get better than like 12.5@157mph. Not quite realistic!! But still fun!

LOL, I have a STi with 975hp that does the 1/4 in about 7 sec, and the 1/2 mile in about 12.2 sec @ 240mph. I started on a new drag car cause the subbie has all the gears set at the highest and it still runs out of gears on the 1/2 mile (bouncing off the redline like crazy with NOSSSS). That and you need a RWD car later on to compete in the wheelie competition 4WD = no good. Though its funny how the STi does a burnout with only the rear wheels to worm up the tires.

I had the same exact problem with the turning. Solution ----> Manual Transmission. My problem was more about being in too low of a gear and not being able to get through the corner fast. Once I tried it on MT it was 100% better. Try to turn off all the driving aids, that helps alot also.

Stranglehold awesome game but shortest ever!! I couldn't keep up with my 8yr old with him playing it every day. I would try to help him on the last level but apparently I suck and just kept dying!! ANyway he breezed through it on Medium and now started Hard then we'll checkout the online multiplayer.
Secondly thanks for the advice on the driving aids for GT HD TCS off ACS set on 8 and I knocked at least 5 seconds off my lap times.
Also getting the hang of the drifting with TCS off ASC set to 0 with R1 tires and my best score was like 7250 (still have to tweak some settings maybe different tires). Pretty cool addition to the game though if it's carried over to GT5.

Is that you in the pic with the skateboard? I used to be sponsored by Venture trucks and Vision Street Wear like 18 years ago. I'm 36 now and have my kids into it and I still show-up the neighborhood kids when my knees aren't aching too bad! We have a 3' tall trick ramp that's 12' wide at the bottom and 8' wide at the top with steel coping. Rainbow Six - Vegas is what I have so far, plus all the freebie downloads I could find (which isn't much.)
My biggest question is are there websites that provide free downloads to the PS3 for games?
And is GT5 Prologue (which is supposed to be free) available anywhere?
shane02pro5

The GT5 is just a prologue not a game demo I think. But the GT HD is good and you get like ten cars and unlock ten modified versions of the same car. Only one track fwd or rev. There is also some drifting which takes some frustration to get thru but it's pretty cool! Call of Duty 4 online is my favorite shooter so far with a very lifelike atmosphere.

For the newbie owners now after x-mas, Super Stardust is a must own download. The bowling game is good too if you like Wii Bowling.
Also, you can get GT Prologue (it's NOT free) by creating a "Japan" account...which is free to do and doesn't screw up your main account. Not really worth it though since you have to pay for GT Prologue and it's not in English....although for most of it you don't need English anyway.

Just wanted you guys to know that Rock Band f'n rocks!
The only problem we've run into is the guitar, which looks outstanding but is built poorly on the inside. Everything was cool for about 30 songs, and I was nailing about 98% of my notes no problem (on medium, best I can do.) However very quickly I noticed that I started missing easy notes, and I pin-pointed the problem down to the strum-bar. On a downstroke, the system would register two strums instead of one. This is a problem! So, being the OCD tech geek that I am, I disassembled the guitar down to its core, and found the problem: This thing was built in China and is held together very poorly! As I said, the exterior is a thing of beauty, but inside it is a messy, hot-glued nightmare. The micro-switches that are located on each side of the strum-bar are flimsy, and not securely mounted. The slightest of movement of a micro-switch changes its alignment with the striking surface that activates it, and in this case the switches would shift about half of a mm. I shoved it back into position, and it worked perfectly for another 2 hours before failing again! So, the whole damn box had to go back to Wal-Mart and I got a new one.
If it happens again, I'm thinking of buying some switches from Radioshack and making my own circuitry within the guitar. The Guitar Hero setup, although a lot noiser with its "clicks" on each strum, is a lot more robust and should have been copied closely, I think.

I borrowed COD4 from my in-laws and I think the realism is amazing compared with Rainbow-Six. But, I like the style of Six much more. I especially like the hiding techniques more. COD4 is pretty intense, with virtually limitless enemies whereas Six has a finite number of Threats.
Still, other then getting a little sea-sick on the first mission, it has been great so far. I do get mighty tired of being popped from a grenade that should have never reached me, but, hey that's war.

My 8 year old beat COD 4 in less than a week. I still like online play though! I also rented UT3 but I wasn't as impressed as I was with COD 4. Maybe I didn't give it a chance.
Unreal is kind of a love/hate from what i see. Some people just don't get it and don't enjoy it. Especially COD fans because they prefer the real life type over the fantastical. Nothing wrong with that. Play what you like, I say. UT3 is just tops for me right now. Plus I'm pretty good at it so... ;). Single player isn't much to talk about. Its really just for pracitce for multiplayer. So COD is hands down on that front. But multi is the reason I play.

I gave it another shot last night, thinking maybe once I rank up I would like it more. Still not lovng it, even though I am doing really well. Hope you do tho! I'll play till I top out my rank just to give it the benefit of the doubt.
I'm curious about PC online. Who is it hosted by? My biggest gripe is that I can't see rooms. I just have to sit and wait to get dumped into a game. Sometimes takes a while to get into a game.

I know it takes me a while to get into a COD4 game while online with the PS3. I gave up several times. Also wish I could do Splitcreen with my kids and other enemies. It's kinda lame just 2 players chasing each other down.
Also been practicing my drifting skills on GT Demo and ranked 9th yesterday which was just luck at a score of 78XX with the 95 Evo. The rankings change every day and I guess nobody was drifting the Evo.
Have to wait for payday to get the GT5 Prologue.
Anyone try it out??

See thats how ut3 is on ps3. I can see all the rooms, whos hosting, game type etc. and pick from there. COD4 I just pick the game style and wait to get dumped into a game. And sometimes it takes forever! Really disappointed in that.

Warhawk is very good game but is online only. It has splitscreen so that makes it good for me and my kids. You can join or host your own games Deathmatch Team Deathmatch and CTF but no story mode. It is cool since the environment is so big. It takes alot of practice to fly the warhawks well enough to enjoy it. It's more of a Kamikaze run around and blast everthing instead of a COD strategy game.

I've heard very good things about the online setup for it. COD4 sucks so bad I am really thinking about selling it. If I like warhawk I may buy it. Also looking at Tiger 08. Oh, and soon to get GT5p. I didn't really want to spend the money on basically an extended demo but I don't think I can wait for the real deal.

COD4 is awesome, especially at the harder difficulty levels. Its REAL, and that makes it fun if not a little aggravating to get it right. Sure, a random RPG could pop you in the head and kill you, but hey, that's war, right?
I beat it on Regular, and I loved it. Now that I've completely gone through both Rainbow Six : Vegas and COD4, I can say I prefer COD4's style. Actually graphically speaking its twice as good, at least at 1080i.
Now I'm on Hardened, and while it is much, much harder then I'm prepared for, I love the concept of survival and trying to maintain stealth against the enemy. I love sniping the bastards.
I own the 360, great games, but after using XBMC, the system has been nothing but a disappointment for media and that was it's original reason why I bought years back to stick in my theater and have a HD media center. Recent update helped some, but bottom line is the darn thing isn't reliable enough to use for anything other then games, I've had the RROD more then once.
Thinking of getting a ps3, either used 60 gig or new 80g for media reasons, a few questions if anyone has time.
1: able to connect to windows share to play video/music files directly?
2. List mp3 by folder name, not id3 or both? 360 does id3 only and it's horrible
3. How long of a range for the wireless sticks? I keep my systems in a room below my living room, the 360 has zero issues
4. Remote is bluetooth, is there a IR dongle? i need to use a harmony remote with it
5. Keyboards and mice added to it, any usb will do or just blue tooth?
6. Divx support, and xvid support, yes I want to download tv shows and watch them so do they work from a network share? or do I have to resort to streaming or transcoding again?
7. HD video like mkv? x264/h264? ok?
8. can i leave hdmi/component connections plugged in and somehow switch between them? I connect to projector/plasma and with the 360 this requires unplugging and pluggin in what I need.
9. Does it have a VGA connection or just hdmi and component?
10. Linux support.is it a waste of time?
11. Any disadvantages to the web browser?can't run java or flash or something?
12. It upscales DVD's yes? how is it for a dvd player, PQ good? Can I ditch my old Sony DVD?
13. for less techy people in the house, how is the interface for getting to pics, mp3, and vids? easy to use or confusing?
14. is divx/xvid in 5.1 or just plain stereo

Here's some answers....not all but some...
1: able to connect to windows share to play video/music files directly? --Yes
2. List mp3 by folder name, not id3 or both? 360 does id3 only and it's horrible
-- Can definitely list by folder name...not sure about ID3 tag. Installing linux gives you a bunch of different options all together too.
3. How long of a range for the wireless sticks? I keep my systems in a room below my living room, the 360 has zero issues
-- Not sure which you mean - the wireless controllers or the wireless internet connection? The wireless controllers I believe are rated at 30ft but I've never tested it beyond 15ft. The wireless internet works fine for me but all of my stuff is upstairs. If all else fails you can always get a wireless repeater.
4. Remote is bluetooth, is there a IR dongle? i need to use a harmony remote with it
-- Yes there is an IR dongle. Very cheep too. You can also make a home-made IR dongle using the old PS2 IR receiver and a PS2-to-PS3 controller converter but in the long run this pre-fab wireless dongle is your best option. No wireless option (other than bluetooth remote or controller) can turn the system on/off though). Here's the link to IR dongle:
http://www.shop4tech.com/item7112.html?siteID=isIkAyUyNbM-qE01.hZA.0P9.da.7GM9uw
5. Keyboards and mice added to it, any usb will do or just blue tooth?
Any USB will do.
6. Divx support, and xvid support, yes I want to download tv shows and watch them so do they work from a network share? or do I have to resort to streaming or transcoding again?
-- Can't remember for sure, it either got Divx support in the last update (I think it did) or it's getting it very soon. I believe it does have it right now.
7. HD video like mkv? x264/h264? ok?
-- I have no idea. Only thing I do know is you can download HD trailers and such...not sure what format they're in.
8. can i leave hdmi/component connections plugged in and somehow switch between them? I connect to projector/plasma and with the 360 this requires unplugging and pluggin in what I need.
-- Yes, it's a setting in the PS3's menu system which interface to output the video and audio signals on.
9. Does it have a VGA connection or just hdmi and component?
-- only HDMI and component.
10. Linux support.is it a waste of time?
-- depends what you want to do with it. In my opinion it's a waste of time right now because Yellow dog linux for it is still fairly weak with what it can do....but I anticipate that will get better this year now that the PS3 has been out long enough. LOTS of potential there....could completely emulate the Wii virtual console all for totally free to name just 1 example.
11. Any disadvantages to the web browser?can't run java or flash or something?
-- Haven't used it enough to say for sure what it can and can't do...it has been able to do whatever I have wanted it to do. My biggest complaint with it is it is SLOW compared to a normal browser.
12. It upscales DVD's yes? how is it for a dvd player, PQ good? Can I ditch my old Sony DVD?
Excellent at upscaling DVDs and old PS2 games. Yes you can ditch your old sony DVD player.
13. for less techy people in the house, how is the interface for getting to pics, mp3, and vids? easy to use or confusing?
-- it's easy to use if all they want to do is get to them and play them. Getting them on there and organized is a bit trickier.
14. is divx/xvid in 5.1 or just plain stereo[/quote]
It's in whatever format the video was encoded in.
Honestly the versatility and breadth of what the PS3 can do is what amazes me the most of the system...and this is coming from a guy that has 2 modded XBoxes. On top of that Sony has been excellent so far in providing firmware updates that continually adds on more and more functionality.
thank you so much girth.
The wireless thing, what I meant but that is the gamepads. I keep my 360 in a room downstairs, my office which has all computers, dvd players, amps, receivers etc. You'll notice in my theater....look at theater thread, there is no equipment in the room. MY living room is similar. The only thig in my living room is the 360 gamepad and tv/speakers of course. This helps keep clutter down, keep picky hands and fingers off of $$$ toys, and even helps with noises from the equipment. I can also keep the equipment in a cooler and safer room. Lots of wiring though. I do not use wireless network in the house for anything but my laptop. All consoles and other things are wired with cat5. Wireless is too unreliable for me...and this is coming from a Wireless Network admin :)

The 40GB model DOES upconvert regular DVDs just like the 20, 60, and 80 GB models. It was a firmware update that works in ALL of the PS3s.
As for the system price, if all you can afford is the 40GB model just go to www.sonystyle.com and apply for their credit card. You can get instant approval and if you buy the system from their website they will give you a $100 credit on the card - so really the 80GB model is only $399 and the 40gb $299.

There is a bit of mis-information here:
The 40GB model DOES have a WiFi connection, just like its big brothers. It only has 2 usb slots (you can buy a USB multi-port adapter for $6.99 or less, and have 6-8 USB slots.) It does upconvert DVD's, about as good as my previous Panasonic upconverting DVD player. It does NOT have memory card slots (but again this can be remedied by buying a ~$20 USB-to-memory card adapter.) It does NOT have game compatibility for PS2. ALL the PS3's right now can play PS1 games. The PS3 software creates a virtual memory card, so there is no need for a physical memory card slot (which the 40GB model has none.) Its the Emotion Engine that is the hard part for PS2 games. The older 60GB model actually has an Emotion Engine inside, so it really is the ideal model if you want to play PS2 games, but for me it was easy to bypass this need as I have a PS2 sitting right next to the PS3 (and it works just fine as-is.) The 80GB model emulates the Emotion Engine, but it admittedly isn't as good as the real thing, and even Sony says it may or may not be fully compatible. This is why I don't have a problem with the 40GB model, myself.
Lastly, I want to point out that the hard drives are user-replaceable, so any new hard drive model that comes out (say a future 200GB model or something like that) will be easy to buy and install in the existing chassis of ANY PS3.

EVERYTHING is saved to the hard drive - your profile, your game saves, everything. For PS2 games you have to buy an adapter to transfer your saves over to the hard drive. The memory card slot he's talking about is for your typical camera memory cards (CF, SD, Memory stick, etc)

Easy - COD4 and Unreal Tournament 3 are must buys. Resistance is a good shooter, as is Uncharted for a 3rd person shooter. For RPGs, Folklore is pretty good also. If you liked Geometry Wars for the XBox you HAVE to download Super Stardust HD as it completely blows GW away. If you like the cheesy Wii control type of games, download High Velocity Bowling as it is a superior bowling game to Wii Bowling.

Umm thats not totaly true. Your online information is saved to your online account. For example your online ranking in COD4 or other games. You can go on other peoples PS3 with your online account and it will let you play with the your unlock iteams.
As far s shooting games I like Rainbow 6 Vegas. It is an older game, but I think they are comming out with a second part soon. It is more of a strategic shooting game, and a lot more slow paced then COD4. But I prefer COD4 over R6V.

No rumble in the standard controller but the new rumbly controller is set to be released in the US this spring. Otherwise you can go to playasia.com and get 1 from Japan -- works fine with the PS3 here and basically costs only $10 more than the standard controller here. Shipping sort of kills it though.
In any case, I have the new rumble controller (dualshock3) and it works great. So far I haven't really noticed much difference in battery life either compared to the non-rumble one.

It is online only and was my first pick for games and the main reason I quickly had my internet set-up. It's pretty cool with such an open environment. It's very fast paced game respawn/ kill/ kill/ die/ respawn/ kill/ kill/ die game and in my opinion better than Unreal Tournament mostly just for the Warhawk flying. After playing COD4 and with it's realism I've been ruined and it doesn't quite compare for me.
The warhawk takes alot of practice to be able to really make use of them and not be shot down within seconds of taking off!!
I'm sure one day I will come back to it since it was definately a worthy purchase and pretty much the only game I played for the first 6months of getting my PS3!

Make sure to connect to the net, and run all your updates/downloads overnight. The PS3 will set up downloads to run while you're sleeping, so you can actually play the next day. I recommend DL'ing everything that is in the Playstation store that is free. It will take a long time to DL and install everything, which is why I recommend doing it overnight.

is it really true that Sony will keep their PS3 system out for 10 years like they did the PS2?
Because then it seems a lot more worth it to get one...!

I have not heard anything about this, but I would be willing to say yes. The main reason is that sony has a highly advanced gaming system that gaming companys are not even close to taking total potential of. The electronics in it are still so new (even though it has been out for this long) that sony still looses money on every sale. The only way they gain money is through games and accesories. I think we will see a new Xbox version before a new sony gaming system because the 360 is reaching the limits of its gaming ability for developers much faster. I waited 2 years to get a PS2 and hated myself for waiting so long. When the PS3 came out I waited until things settled down (i.e. end of holiday season) and went and bought one. I was going to wait until GT came out, but due to sony constantly pushing back the lauch dates of there games I decided I didn't want to wait. I can say I am VERY happy I did not wait.
One more thing. I just noticed that sony pushed back GT Prolouge AGAIN (headshake. It was supposed to come out early march. Now it will be middle of april. LOL at sony and its game developers.

It's probably pretty likely. Back when the PS1 and PS2 were released Sony openly admitted they wanted to have a regular new hardware cycle of 3 to 4 years. The PS1 to PS2 took about 4 years but the PS2 lasted a lot longer than even Sony originally anticipated. Contrast that to the PS3 -- Sony has stated right from the start that they are aiming for a 10 year life span. Seems pretty unlikely and more marketing hype than anything to me....but when you consider the PS2 is already on its 9th year maybe it isn't that crazy.

Well people, I am impressed with the over all performance of the PS3. Coming from hardcore 360 player, one thing that was really impressive is the wifi connection to my home network. Absolutely amazing. Played COD4 for approx. 4 hours and did not have one network connection issue. Not one. There is no way I could ever get that long on the 360 without some fucking network issue. And that is with the system hard wired.
Still haven't even scratched the surface with all the little details within the core of the system. But one thing that I have to give credit to xbox is the Xbox live system. PS3 is far behind on this category. I don't like the fact that you can only chat, join, or anything for that matter on a game by game basis. Where as with Xbox live, I can pull up my window when I am pretty much doing anything whether playing a game, hearing music, watching a movie, or just plain picking my ass and chat, send messages, join, chat privately while playing a completely diffferent game and so on and so forth. On another note, wtf why doesn't it come with a mic...that really sucks...
I also like the weight of the controller, just have to get used to the control pad to the upper left...lmao My left thumb kept moving down for all the goodies...
But all in all, the system is pretty sweet. I am very happy with the buy. I have two kick ass systems.
SlvrBullet007 if anyone is interested on adding me.

I'll probably add you when I'm on next time (the GF is hogging the TV right now). Glad you're happy with the system - and just remember it's honestly going to get a lot better from here on out. 2008 is set up to be a big year. I agree XBox Live is superior to the PSN but the PSN is cheaper (obviously) and they are going to come out with "Home" sometime this year, which should provide a lot of the online chat and other features you miss from XBox Live. A mic would be nice if it came with the system but I suppose they have to draw the line with features somewhere. Either go with any USB or wireless headset or you could also get the PS Eye (camera) for $40 as that has a mic built in.

I have a question about something I noticed yesterday playing COD4. Why does the game only come out in 720p??? I have the system setup for 1080p and is running 1080 on the system dashboard. But when the game launches the game runs @ 720...wtf???
Also had a problem playing blu ray's. Called tech support and they made me shut off the automatic to "off" on the HDMI setting...you know the 1080p @ 48hz...or w/e the hell that is. Anyway, they could not give me an explanation about the game and I was wondering if any of you noticed this and or have a solution?

Just need a hi-speed connection. If you use a wireless router it has one built in and it will detect it. You might be able to get a signal from someone in your area. PS3 online is free!

First and foremost you need an ISP, which I am pretty sure you already have.
You can do it two ways, you can buy a router (preferebly wireless) as shane as mentioned and hook it up via wirelessly, or you can run an ethernet cable and hard wire the machine. With a router to the your ISP's modem you can have several macines on the internet with only one internet service.
If you don't need a router, then you can just run the modem straight the PS3 with an ethernet cable.

No just set it to "Normal" and it will do the upscaling. It doesn't give you any kind of confirmation message.
Is it possible to charge the controller without the system being on?
Yup - plug the controller into any USB port on any computer or TV or whatever else you have. Places like Circuit City also have a "charge kit" that you can get for $20 or something that basically is just a powered usb hub that you can plug in. Me, I have a laptop next to my lay-z-boy so I just plug the controller into there.
Also, wtf, the wired mic doesn't hook up to the controller?
Nope.

A few options here:
1. The PS Eye has a microphone built in that can pick up your voice plenty good from 10 feet away, so you could just do that.
2. Get a wireless mic.
3. Get a USB microphone and buy a USB extension cable. Seriously you can get an extension cable for like $3 at monoprice.com........shortly after buying the PS3 I just went and bought 4, 10ft extension cables and it has served me well. I actually don't even use them though....I just charge the controller on the computer when I'm not playing and I use the PS-eye for my microphone right now. I have a USB headset but I'm too lazy to drag it out and hook it up.

I appreciate your help Girth. I ended up buying the Mad Catz wireless headset. But now, from what I gather, everytime I turn on the system I have to connect the headset. Not pair, but I have to connect it...?
I was thinking of that with the controller just hooking it up to my comp.
These little things are really annoying. But like I said, I am happy with the system. Only prob I am having now is that most games are not even 1080i. Every game I was looking at yesterday at gamestop was 720p. So I guess I am going to wait for the rest of the games to come out this year. They should all be atleast 1080i. Hoping for 1080p.

Yeah there's a lack of 1080p games for sure. I'm not familiar with that headset so I can't help you there. The only thing I can say is maybe there's a special procedure for it when you start the system up. I know I was confused at first when I first used the Guitar Hero 3 wireless controller because it had a special procedure to get it "recognized"...had to hold down a button on the dongle and then hit the PS button on the guitar or some weird crap. Check in the manual for the headset if it says anything like that.

Any of you guys that are playing COD4 I had a very weird thing happen last night with my son playing.
The day before we were like Brigadier General (I think) level 43 (I know)
then we started last night and dropped all the way down to level 26.
We still have all of our unlocked items including the Desert Eagle which we just unlocked.
So I went to the Barracks and it showed Level 43 Brigadier General next rank at lvl 44 in like 6509900008 points and the numbers just kept scrolling higher.
So I was like okay maybe something is up with the servers so I reboot and still shows the same thing including my lvl 43 in the barracks. Then I play some more and my ranking gets promoted to Captain or something at lvl 27 and the barracks shows me at lvl 27 now so I guess I'm screwed and have to work my way back up?? I still have all my unlocked stuff but it's just frustrating and doesn't make a bit of sense!
