I'm getting tired of the whole bucking bronco thing, and I'm hoping that replacing the mount will fix it. How hard is it to do this, and is there a how-to on it anywhere? I only found one on the rear mount, but from what I've read by searching, doing the front is a lot less involved.

The only things I've done are change engine/transmission oil, and install shifter bushings. Think I could possibly do it myself?

Thanks.

Pretty easy....

1-Loosen two bolts under mount
2-Loosen bolt through mount
3-Remove Mount
4-Reverse order....

I had a hell of a time breaking the bolt through the mount free, needed a air gun for it...Just be careful not to strip out that bolt and should only take you 15minutes with hand tools...

Thanks for the reply!

Question, though. Does nothing need to be done to the engine to remove the mount? Does the engine not depend on the mount to keep it in place?

No, the front mount holds absolutely no weight..can be taken out without lifting the engine....The back would require a jack or lift to be taken out..

^hmmm more useless parts lol...well not really, but it doesnt hold weight, so its a lil useless

The front mount is the most important in reducing and controling engine movement, which in turn is the most important to help your drivetrain survive...So useless, not by a long shot...

^ah gotcha. it just sounded useless cuz you said it doesnt hold any weight, but i see what youre sayin now. makes sense

Haha, I'm planning on replacing with a new stock mount, though. =) I know that it's just putting the issue on hold for a period of time, but for me a very long period because I only drive 10,000 KM a year. I'm hoping that part of the reason the mount is so bad at this point is that the previous owner of the car drove hard or something, because I granny the car 99% of the time.

If you replace it with a 70 durometer solid mount, it is pretty tame vibration-wise after break-in.

But yeah.. here's one thing to remember: DON'T jack up the front of the car while doing this. If you jack it up, the engine will be pulling up on the mount and it'll make the center bolt really hard to pull out.

Thanks for the tip.

If I change only the front, will it cause the other ones to wear quickly?

in our experience, not really. alot of that depends on driving habits.

:)
It is buried in the MSP forums (engine & performance) so may not be getting the attention it deserves for all of us 3rd Gen protégés share the same weak motor mounts. Looks very promising, hope we don’t have to wait too long. :)

I changed the front mount to the AWR 70. The vibrations are noticable at first but after two weeks it's pretty much back to stock.

However, about two months after installing the front mount I began to notice the engine is rocking back and forth again. It's now at the point where it's as bad as it was before the AWR.

So in my experience, changing out the front mount does toast the rear one. And I don't beat on my car.

That's basically what I noticed.. so then I installed RR Racing rear motor mount inserts, as my rear motor mount wasn't torn at all when I got back there to look at it. Two weeks later, the vibrations are still VERY bad (in terms of my dash, gauges.. EVERYTHING rattling). I'm hoping they are still breaking in :P

My engine does still buck a tiny bit, when stuck in traffic at that fun speed where you can barely drive in 2nd and don't want to sit in 1st anymore.. so if these vibrations ever die down I'll consider side inserts at this point.

If I go into my local dealership parts department will they know what I want when I tell them I need a front motor mount for a protege5?

yeah, the part is pretty self explainitory... so I dont see any issue with asking for it like that.

just dont know if they will have them in stock... THATS the question to ask..

Heh, hopefully if not they'll be able to order one. I wonder how much it costs...

I found this useful detailed how-to on it!
http://www.thinkythings.org/p5/front-motor-mount.html

Seems that the part is at the bottom and covered by the plate, no less. How would I get access to it without jacking the car up?
