Muffler/resonator paint

Has anybody tried painting that huge muffler/resonator, or whatever it's called. It's clearly visible from the rear of the vehicle, and mine's starting to discolor.

If so, what paint did you use, and how's it holding up to the heat?

There's two right G Papi.....the exhaust pipes I am assuming....my RX 8 pipes discolored and I never got it back to being shiny...I'd like to know if you could paint it too! Thanks.

Not really sure what your talking about but I'll check underneath to see. I believe some high-temp block spray paint would work.

Wait, are you talking about the chrome muffler output tips? If so, some silver polish or aluminum pulish and elbow grease should bring some shine back to em.

Look at the butt-end pictures of the -7 in the advertising--do you see any large, silver thing hanging down? I don't either. The very first thing I did (at <200 miles) was to paint the muffler/whatever black using Rust-Oleum Bar-B-Q Black 7778. I've used this on my Miata's exhaust, and it doesn't flake off. Get it, do it, you'll like it.

The Rust Oleum BBQ black is the best stuff. We use it on a lot of motorcycle pipes and exhaust. It stays put except when its hot and gets wet. The beauty is though, its cheap enough to keep a can around and keep re-applying.

Yep - I'm talking about the muffler assembly which stretches across nearly the entire width of the back end.

Not the tips.

Ahh. I see. Sounds like bbq paint is the way to go.

I decided not to paint for fear of looking tacky.

I found that Bar Keepers Friend brings it back nicely.

Ummmm...are you saying that mine looks tacky? What's that? You can't see it? Oh, ok.

Seriously, despite what someone else said, it doesn't flake off when it gets wet. I painted my Miata's muffler several years ago and it hasn't flaked yet. (What? You can't see the Miata's muffler either? I'll be darned. Then I'll bet you can't see the spare tire under there, either, and I didn't paint it.)

Nope - I can't see yours, so it looks fine.

I probably had greater reference to my painting technique (or lack thereof) that would result in my work looking tacky. Once you look at it up close, it's a complex arrangement that ideally would have to come off th be painted properly.

Call me lazy ~ I don't care.

Bar Keepers Friend did the trick this time. We'll see about next time.

I don't think you're lazy, I just think you overestimate the difficulty. Took all of 60 seconds--nobody is going to see the top or front of the thing. Just lay down, spray what you can see, and quit.
