View Full Version : When you're driving and you spot a CX7..

I have now seen about 3 CX7's in my immediate area, a black one, white one, another blue one like mine, but not a GT.
The count is up, I live in Happy Valley, Oregon and it's a small area. Good to see other's out there with good taste. It's kind of cool because when I drive past someone in a CX7 we kind of look at each other with a univeral head nod, and they are like me in that they keep looking at my CX7 in their mirror as I pass them etc. Definitely fun!
What happens when you pass another CX7?

Pretty much the same. I like to see how I look when I go by. Seeing another gives me an idea.

I haven't seen a single-one in my area... but I am torn on the attention mine gets. Part of me thinks it's cool, the other part is irritated. The car gets stares at red-lights and in parking lots - one afternoon, my wife and I came-out to my car to see another couple and their two kids walking around it... as if it were on a dealer lot... looking inside the windows etc.
They seemed rather embarassed as we approached and I even offered to let him look inside... but they just apologized and moved-on.
But I hear comments all-the-time. While I was unloading my gear for a gig in Boston, I heard NUMEROUS couples as they walked by comment on "Hey, now maybe we should look into getting one of THOSE, that's Nice!", etc.
But haven't seen others on the road yet.

I pulled up to a gas station the other day. A guy was in a Porsche Cayane turbo next to me getting gas. He came over and checked the CX7 out and was very impressed. He was like "nice car" then I said "yeah you can buy 4 of mine to 1 of yours", LOL. he was pretty impressed. I seem to get that a lot when other CUV's much more $$$ show up.

I usually give a wave. I had only a couple people wave back....Some of them may have not seen me wave because of traffic.
I've only seen about a handful of 7's where I am. I thought about giving a quick nod, but I'm not sure if the other guys will think I'm weird or something. I use to do it when I had my Integra Type R, but the head nod was almost a universal thing among ITR owners.
I love seeing other 7's driving around. It looks great when it's moving, and especially good when you see the back end and those twin tail pipes pulling away :).

Can't say we have waved at each other but I bet were both looking back in our mirrors.....I am at least. In my RX 8 we always waved or gave the peace sign. Seen about three around my area.....silver, black and copper red.

Call me a narcissist, but I'm not one to engage in the "we've got the same car so we should acknowledge each-other" activities. I mean, if someone with the same car looks over and waives, I'm not gonna flip 'em off... I might give a nod of confirmation, but I'm not going to solicit a waive from anybody. :)
Not insulting those of you who DO partake in that... but it's just not me.

You can always do what the *original Beetle* owners did -- flash your headlights. It got to be expected of Beetle owners. Those were the days when Beetles were the only cars on the road with headlight-flashing capability. The other way is to honk your horn twice.

I have a '79 Vette, and while I agree with Cx-7 Scott, I do wave when passing other Vettes. It's a "thing" and it was going on long before I bought my Vette 15 years ago, so when in Rome. But I have yet to see a CX-7 on the road in Michigan. sure, lots of domestics on the road, here, but you'd think I would have seen at least one. As far as staring, people do seem to react to this car. I notice ladies looking at the car a lot more than men....I'm sure they aren't looking at me. But it's not as bad as my 300C. I had one of the first when there were none on the road and everyone stared and flagged me down and asked to sit in it and wanted to talk about it. I was relieved when they finally got more on the road and became "normal" sights. But, so far, I like being the only CX-7 I see. People also universally agree it looks more expensive than it is.

Yeah, I hate 'fessing up what the sticker price is on it.

Are you kidding...? I must be one of the poorer ones here... a $32k sticker is not cheap to me. :)
I was actually looking at the Dodge Caliber (around $17k) but ultimately... the CVT (gearless transmission), lack of options, inferior trim level and style just kept me from going that direction.
You are right... it "appears" to be a more expensive car... but I would never guess it to be in the range of... say... an RX-330 or anything.
sincerely yours,

Most of us have a budget - but the uninformed compare the car to a Lexus, Porsche, or VW Touatag. Just because they all have similar profiles.
Mazda Credit got my payment this week, and it hurt my feelings.:)

OFF-TOPIC: We opted for Chase financing (lower interest)... but found-out that if you want to pay online or by phone... they charge you $10 per transaction. HOLY #&$%!!! I called to complain, but it (obviously) got me nowhere.
The only way to NOT pay a fee is to mail it in as normal, setup an automatic monthly withdrawl OR get a Chase account.
21st century and they are the ONLY creditor I have that CHARGES for online payments. Rediculous.
Sorry - we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress...

Well, I used S plan so I got a few knocked off. My 28k OTD would have been several grand more for a similiarly equipped competitor. Lets hope I made the right decision. (see thread "my car is in the shop for more than I wanted")

I was also an S plan person, but I leased, 'cuz I like new cars every two years. That made this car with its $30,662.00 more affordable to me. And I surely wasn't waving off such an expense. It IS a lot of money. However, it looks like a Lexus to people, or Acura. So when I tell people what I paid, they're always surprised.

Scott: Now you know what millions of former Chase customers learned. To pay mortgage payments by phone they charge $14.95. They also sit on payments so they are "late" and they can add a late fee. Be SURE to mail it in so it arrives before the grace period by at least 4 days. It pays to set up an online account so you can at least see when it is posted. Do not pay online. Then check your online checking account to see when Chase sent it through. That will give you an idea of when to mail future payments.
Watch out for Chase "buying" your credit card account from another bank so they can drain you. They jack up the interest rate.

First-gen Miata owners (including me) usually pop up our "barn door" headlights (the "Miata wave"), but later Gen-2 and Gen-3 Miata owners with fixed headlights seem to have a "WTF is that?" attitude toward us. I've only seen two other CX-7s on the road in the last couple of months, and only one when I was driving mine, and didn't do anything special. Once they get as common as Hyundai Santa Fes, nobody will notice us, and we won't notice each other.

I have a Chase credit card and use my online billpay (or ebills) through my bank. It's all electronic and so I don't have to worry about 'late' payments. Most larger banks <- yes I work for one - offer free bill pay anymore. Might be worth a shot for those trying to time it right.

really? i'm not paying that. but my account is 4 years old, so....
you might look into your bank's auto-pay feature. my credit union will auto-pay any bill (even to a private individual, like a landlord). they cut a check and mail it. if your bank offers it, that might give you the benefit of automatic, on-time payments and avoid the (ridiculous) online fee.

I was riding around in Tyler, TX a day after I bought mine and I saw a Black CUV and I said "damn that is a clean looking ride". My Hubby looked at me and said "you are in one that looks just like it. That is a CX-7". (omg) I was floored. (omg) I mean, I know that it is a nice looking vehicle but, it was just wild to see another one out and about and realize how great it looks.
Haven't seen one in my surrounding area. There's this one time I was getting gas and a guy looked around it and says to me "Is this a Lexus?" I just smiled and said "No, it's a $20K less version of that, it's a Mazda CX7." And he just couldn't believe it's none of those luxury carmakers. What a nice feeling to have compliments like that.

Was headed down I-75 to FL around Christmas, and saw a black CX-7 coming up behind my red one.
Was watching the review, and was a bit surprised as I got a double-tap of the horn, and a thumbs up.
Returned the favor, and watched them scoot on ahead for a bit.

I smile but usually they have a Cardinale Mazda Dealer front plate which means they paid about $2,000 more than if they would have driven 30 miles north to the Gilroy dealer.... I know because I went there first and they wanted $28,000 for a sport model, $34,000 for a loaded GT. That is before tax and stuff.
So I usually think about what those poor bastards paid for their CX7...
Ouch...

I'm not that nice (from Jersey, what can I say), so I usually just comment to myself about someone else having good taste!
I am a little torn about seeing too many of these on the road. On one hand, I like being original and keep people wondering, "what was that". But on the other hand, the more people that buy in, the better the aftermarket support will be.

I have to concur with some of the comments in this thread about the perceived price of the vehicle. It seems the other cross over owners are the ones who are most interested or take notice. The CX-7 has a unique look to it, so people are likely curious what it is. I know when I first saw a Saturn Skye, I simply thought, there is no way I just saw the Saturn logo. Once the vehicle gets a little more popluar I think the attention will wane as people get familiar with the lines.
There is another Galaxy Gray CX-7, a Sport version, at the place I work. I have been tempted to park right beside him/her. Other than that one, I have not really seen any others on the road. In fact, the appearance of that one in the parking lot at work is what peaked my attention to the car in the first place. :)
I really like the Mazda since it is a relative bargain. I looked at getting an FX-35 (not a Lexus, however, no thanks), Murano, and even a CX-9 before I settled in on the CX-7. $26,680 for an AWD Grand Touring with the Bose/Moonroof was such a sweet deal, I had to execute. I am leasing it for 27 months ($194 per month) and will buy it at the end for the 19K residual. So far, I am really enjoying this vehicle!

Ive seen a couple so far, but not to many, but I'm seeing alot of cx-9's, but when I'm at a stop light I see people checking out the car, not as much as my 03 eclipse, but that was because it was pimped out, "tastefully," not over done and tacky. But so far when all my friends see it, the love it, and i still think its one of the best looking cuv's out there by far.

I have seen one in my area. She and I looked at each other's (her was red) and kept moving.
I don't mind telling people the price. Or the fact that we could afford twice as much vehicle but chose not to. I am one of those die-hard mazda fans who never consider much of anything else except what Mazda has to offer. She's much better than my old Tribute. Anything more expensive just has useless-to-me gadgets.

I posted this thread a while back and would have expected there to be a lot more on the road by this time.. however I have had a few very cool exchanges with other CX7's.
Drove down to California and saw a few but they didn't really give me acknowledgement. In Oregon however it has been fun.
Today we were headed south on I5 and a white GT passed by me (only cause I let him) he passed by a gave a big wave to me, very excited young man driving. I returned the wave of course.
My wife said something to the effect of "you CX7 guys!" she doesn't get it, but she also thinks Mazda should somehow take advantage of this shared entusiasm but they probably don't even know.
We then went to a "Wild Oats" store and there was a CX7 parked with a spot right next to it on the left, this was a Silver GT. So I parked next to it, it was very cool but even cooler when we had the same license plate Letters at the end and the 3 numbers to the left of the letters were just 20 numbers apart.
My teenagers stayed in the car and said when the guy came out, he was looking at my Electric Blue, up and down, and very excitedly pointing out the license plates to his wife (whom I am sure was rolling her eyes...)
Kind of a neat day for me!
