it's an instrument that displays real-time data on stuff like intake Manifold Vacuum/Boost Pressure, Air Flow Capacity, Intake Manifold Pressure, Karmann Frequency, Engine RPM, Throttle Position, and Air Flow Correction %

pretty usefull when tunning.

...That's not the main function of the unit...

here is the dsmconvert's web site http://www.airflowlogistics.com/

do you have to have a laptop for this?

You would need one only if you want to change the maps or check out the datalog function.

Here is the company that made the units www.splitsec.com (http://www.splitsec.com)

does someone have a pic of it and what it looks like on the computer?

can most shops tune this? or is it pretty simple to tune it?

I don't have pic right now, but I'll take one tomorrow. You can tune it yourself if you do some reading up and testing.

Tuning is very simple. The AFC just modifies the MAF signal to provide more or less fuel at a desired RPM & MAP point.

Yea it works really well and is easy to tune too. I've had one for a little while now and couldn't be happier with it. For the price you can't go wrong, I paid 260 shipped during a GB. It's a great piggyback for someone interested in only lightly or mildly modifying their msp. If you plan on going built and bigger turbo I would get a full standalone.

This is a great upgrade to your car... smooths out the powerband even if you're stock and allows flexibility for tuning yourself as your mods increase. I'd say this unit is even safe if you do forge your motor and you're boosting up to 12-15psi depending on your supporting mods. The only thing it lacks that is important is timing control, and that is an option if you want to do timing retard for higher boost applications. I just relocated my MAF with it a couple of weeks ago as well and so far so good, nothing I've noticed to worry about. In terms of needing a laptop, I don't have one, as mine crapped out about the same time I put this in so I haven't been able to tune it myself or get a full datalog but like I said, so far so good

You can do this yourself for sure... it's 6 wires. The hardest part is not cutting your hand on the metal cover for the ECU but the actual install is a snap. You can even make a plug set-up so you can take this out easily if you needed to... did that for a while but once I realized there was no way in hell I was going to be able to get any warranty work done at this point anyway I figured I'd just hardwire it in.
