no it never came 4wd. in like 1990 or 1991 they had a 323 (protege) in the canada area with 4wd but it wasn't a very good system if i remember correctly. there was a member here a few years ago trying to go 4wd but i think only ended up 3wd. search for "3 wheels spinning" or something like that. it was a pretty big project but never worked out. now that the speed6 is out...im really surprised someone hasn't tried popping one of those babies in a protege or 3 yet.

Do a search man, it's been beat to death.
It'll never happen.

I doubt anyone will throw 10-15k in there protege to make it awd. So why do these threads keep popping up. But if you have the money and time go for it. There are 3rd gen familia's in Japan. But I am sure shipping will also kill you.

There were Familias (Protege 5) in Japan and Europe that came with AWD were there not? I thought I read a thread about someone that was trying to take the drivetrain out of that and put it in a North American P5.

Yea you can but who wants to spend more on making it awd when it costs just as much as the car. It is just not worth it. If you want awd get an evo.

If I won the lottery then my dream is to put an EVO 8 engine/ drivetrain in to the speed. Simply because I love the way our car looks and I love their system. May be a stupid thought, but it is mine and would make me smile having it, not to mention beat the snot out of anybody that scoffed at my Evoge.

mazda did sell first gen proteges in the states with all wheel drive. they are garbage for the most part.
xelderx was going to swap in the sport20 AWD drivetrain with the help of corksport, who if i am not mistaken has the list of everything you need to do it.

There was a picture of a blue PR-5 in japan with AWD badges on it and yes it was real. Apparently it was not a very strong kit and it would not hold up well in a high power application.

As people have said, it would never be worth it to convert it to AWD. Much more economical and feasible to just buy a car that came with AWD. EVO is my #1 pick (and you would be absolutely crazy to rip the drivetrain out of it to put in a P5 or MSP unless you litteraly found a wrecked EVO for nothing and the P5 was not your DD, as it would be a huge project) but an older WRX wouldn't be bad either. AWD DSM's can also be found for dirt cheap ($1k-4k for a 1g, $2.5k-$8k for a 2g). Point is, unless you are a millionaire with nothing better to do with your money (and you have a couple other cars), it is just not worth it.

i donno i think people are looking at this too much from an economical stand point im sure there is some one out there that loves their slo-tege enough to do the conversioin i mean look at all the vw guys that do the 4matic conversion, that cant be cheap either.

They may not be cheap to convert but at least they have an AWD system that is made for that chasis. There is not one available for the Protege (unless you wanted the apparantly crappy system from the first gen) so it would all have to be custom. It would be very time consuming and expensive, but like I said if someone was in the right position and loved their car, then why not? I just don't see it as being a feasible option.

That trany is very weak, from what i have read but that what i was think of doing. That won't hold stock power so ill just stay fwd.

How about the feasability/cost of a RWD conversion?

maybe i have a very vivid imagination but wasnt there a 4wd sport 20 released in japan?
BTW... i got off the phone with corksport a few minutes ago and they said id be looking at about 2k for parts, but that the main problem would be the gas tank. it seems like they have trouble getting that but you could just go ahead and run a fuel cell in the trunk. So the moral of the story is if you want to go 4wd call corksport i know ill be calling them in a few weeks with my order.

Dude,
That's awesome. Weak or not that would sure help around here (bad New England winters).
Can you buy me one too? haha
Oh and I still can't get to the page with that link.
Now the question is.....
How can we put together a comprehensive How-to and then design a budget kit using cheap available parts from other platforms!!

Maybe if it were possible to import those Sport20 AWD and convert those into Protegés and P5 (or whatever), that would be fantastic!
I just see that Mazda.com has changed their site. Here's the new link for the wagon:
http://www.mazda.com/publicity/release/2002/
Click the 3rd item (2002/12/24 Mazda Upgrades 'Familia S-Wagon SPORT20' to Sportier Vehicle) and check the table at the end of the press release
And here's for the sedan:

7th news release (Familia Sedan Addition: 'SPORT 20')
