so i was making a left turn under normal driving conditions a couple days ago, and as i accelerated there was a klunk and then some grinding while on the gas. Luckily i work for a Mazda dealership and they confirmed a little bit ago that it was my LSD. I also broke the fork off my clutch, not sure how but o well. Just to let anyone know who is wandering, everything that broke was factory, i ordered an Exedy stage 1 clutch, and the tranny upgrade kit from protegegarage.com. It sucks cuz thats a lotta green, but i cant help being excited that ill have a pretty good set up once its out of the shop. Does anyone know how many LSD problems there have been total for msp's.

Danm sorry to hear it. These stories make me think of getting a MP3 as oppose to a MSP. But then the MSP just has that extra grunt & handling... BTW there is a thread where everyone's posted thier LSD's blowing out.

Mine just went out. 70k miles on it. I went with the updated one due to the slight price difference. I am not planning on making to much hp out of this car. Its just a daily driver.

the best thing you can do is start saving for the replacement lsd now. I already have a clutch and $ set aside when (not if) it happens to me, so as not to be sweatin' it.

My grand total is going to be round 1500 dollars.... I am getting new update lsd, new clutch, new rear motor mount and all the little hardware needed to install it. I am getting another stock clutch.

best thing you can do is get the lsd welded before it breaks. there have been no reported broken lsds once they have been welded. a lot cheaper than a replacement lsd or a quaife. a broken lsd cannot be welded

i like the saving for when it breaks idea...because getting it welded, finding a good place to do it for a reasonable price, puts you through the same amount of mission when it eventually does break. we should make a petition or something to mazda...for those little of us left with the stock lsd. ...hhmm..

Regarding getting it welded before it breaks, I looked into this and here's what I found:
A) If you are removing your tranny to get to the LSD it's silly not to do the clutch. If you are doing the clutch then you need to have your flywheel replaced or lathed (resurfaced). $ + more $ + more $ = no $
B) There is a rediculous amount of work involved, and if you are not a mechanic I don't recommend this job as a d.i.y.'er. Plus there is a huge benefit to a shop owning liability if the job isn't done correctly.
C) I asked around at many of my local shops (city of 200K+ ppl), and the highest profile transmission shop in town *refused* to do the job. This is because they couldn't do the welding, so this requires them to disassemble it, me to clean it meticulously and deliver it to another place for the welding, wait 2-3 days until I get it back, and then bring it back to the first shop for reassembly. They didn't want the "other shop" variable to botch their work so they just said "we don't want the liability."
The shop that finally did agree to doing it also did not do tig welding. They were going to charge me $780 + fluids and parts (gaskets, etc)...before tax. Then add another $150 for the resurfacing of the flywheel and tig weld on LSD together, and that's nearly a $1K job.
HOWEVER, if I were to give them an already welded new replacement LSD then the labor drops by about $350-$400 and the first shop would then take on the job.
When I looked at the cost of this plus the 4-5 days the car would be out of commission compared to the cost of just swapping it with a pre-welded OEM LSD it was pretty clear the latter was the choice to make.
You decide, but I don't think my experience is going to be extremely unique.

...and my LSD went yesterday by the way. It's in the shop today to verify what I'm 99% sure of already. If/when they tell me it's indeed the LSD I'm ordering this for install along with the new SPEC clutch I have sitting in my kitchen:

I think that turfburn also offers a welding service for the stock LSD.

SO...what do you think... w8 till it (LSD) breaks or just go ahead and change it. and what is the chances that ill break anyway?

Well there are ~80 documented cases on this forum alone. Some say that it's how you drive, while others broke on a grocery run, or cruise. I guess you could play roulet and wait to see if/when it breaks. But it's a good idea to be prepared for it.

if you *ever* had even one case of wheel hop when launching; if you ever auto crossed or tend to take your turns on the aggressive side then you will be wise to be proactive instead of reactive.
Take care of it before it takes care of you, and then don't have to feel like your driving a ticking time-bomb.

easier said than done though...of course you have no choice when it does break, but if not you have to go through the mission of being without a car for however long it takes to have a shop disassemble your tranny, take out lsd, take it to someone who knows what the fuck theyre doin to weld our lsd the right way, take it back to the shop, put it all back together.....i dunno...i hate the idea of knowing it will evetually break though...mazda should have fuckin recalled that shit.....i wonder if they even know that every single msp's lsd has broken....

it takes a shop 8 hours on the books to do a clutch, and replace the LSD. That's 1 day's worth of work.
EDIT: If you have the pre-welded LSD already in hand then you would be without a car for 2 days max including a clutch installation and grinding of the flywheel.
If you wait until it breaks then you will be like me waiting for the part for over a week and a half before a shop even touches your car. I will be without a car for almost 2 full weeks when all is said and done.
You decide which sucks more...

ya this whole thing tallrd has got me quite nervous about my car to be honest with you. I cant afford going without a car for that long. I just cant decide if my cash is better spent putting to a new car rather than fixing a broken one. THis is something that mazda should have stepped up and taken care of.

Sorry, but I'd say that it's ultimately up to you to do your own research. Sure it'd be great to have ALL the information in the same spot, but due to recent....um....*issues* I don't think that certain vendors products will be endorsed here. So that just leaves more research up to you.
