View Full Version : Just drove a Cosmic Blue MS3!

Just drove a cosmic blue ms3 over an hour ago... I'll say it now, it's one bad motherfucker! Once boost kicks in, you better hang on for dear life!

it IS confirmed that there will be NO heated seats on the base model (which is what I drove)

cosmic blue looks like titanium gray except it has a blue hue in it... it's a very subdued color and that makes the car a better sleeper than the other colors offered... it really doesn't look that bad!

clutch operation is excellent (for a new school mazda), next from the RX-8's... easy and smooth pedal which makes it great for daily driving in traffic, but not too soft or sloppy like the normal 3 has.. there is also some clutch feel through the pedal, you can easily modulate the pedal up to the engagement point, none of that "on-off" bullshit like the ms6 has

shifter feels pretty much like the ms6's... short but pretty numb due to the cable linkage, not surprising since the tranny is basically the same

while there is engine movement, it is very controlled in that it won't flop around like the normal 3 has... the engine mounts ARE stiffer and that helps with the easier clutch modulation also... shifting at high rpm will just get you a solid jolt from the engine, no bouncing feel at all... this is pretty good for rubber mounts... so not bad for stock!

there IS torque steer if you have the pedal more than halfway down... when boost kicks in, you better hang on or you'll run into the curb! saying mazda reduced the power on 1st and 2nd gear seems like a joke... the power is crazy even in those gears! you don't have to wait for the needle to get to the 6900rpm limiter before you frantically try to upshift!

handling is unfortunately not as good as the MSP mostly due to the higher power, but even so it's pretty good... cornering, there's a hint of understeer but is mostly neutral... DO NOT step on the gas at all while cornering, not even a little bit... because the RPMs are already up there, boost will instantly kick back in and you'll end up spinning your tires around the corner! it makes it seem like the LSD is a 1 way type even though its engagement is smooth

pedal positions have been changed so that you can actually heel and toe now unlike the normal 3's (they watered that shit down for the normal 3 because people were bitching about being able to step on the gas and brake at the same time).... throttle response is mediocre compared to the RX-8 or normal 3, all of these cars have drive by wire throttles but the control logic in the ms3 is just shitty... combine this with a heavy flywheel on the ms3, and that makes rev matching pretty shitty... but at least it can be done now rather than almost impossible!

the seats are extremely supportive and will fit an average sized american just fine without feeling too tight... the steering feels slower and more heavy than the normal 3 due to the fact that it's now using a conventional power steering system for better road feel and a slightly slower steering gear for better "stability"... road feel is definately slightly better than the normal 3 but still nothing compared to the protege's... hell the steering is still better than the new MX-5, so that says a lot!

the "cargo management system" feature in the trunk area has been deleted on the ms3s to 1) make room for the large spare tire, 2) save weight and cost... it is that big plastic tray for storing a small amount of crap under the spare tire cover which is existant in the normal 3s

the exhaust note is awesome... no more subdued noise like the previous mazdaspeed cars, there is actually grunt to the noise... it sounds aftermarket!

so what this thing really needs are 1) better tires, 2) stiffer suspension to reduce rear suspension squat on hard accelleration which means improving traction and stability, 3) larger rear sway bar to make the car handle even more neutral... a racing beat rear sway bar comes to mind
I'd leave the engine related shit alone, this fucking thing is crazy fast as it is... it's a BIG recipe for a ticket!

so go ahead and roast those shitty stock tires away so you'd have the excuse to buy better ones! believe me, it's not hard to do that on this car!

oh and mazda won't be making many of these at once... production rate will be slow so that they will be trickling in to dealerships instead of a flood of them like the ms6s were... there will be only 4-6 allocated per dealer every 3 months... so even though there's the 5000 production target for 2007, they will keep them coming in only as a trickle to keep it rare and demand high!

Awesome review. These are always better I feel than the magazines take on the car. Sounds like a sick car I must say. We'll see how well these things sell for mazda, hopefully better than the previous speedsters. I've got to agree with you about the msp handling, i'm addicted to the twisties with it. Can't think of too many other cars in the same category that can perform like it. Good to see that mazda finally got the power up on their cars though...hopefully honda will follow next!

I bet it handles better than my '97 Ranger....

I think it needs new engine mount after watching a dyno video with the hood open. It rocks back and forth a LOT!

I really want to have one of these cars, but I don't want to step backwards in the handling department (from my MSP) just to do so. I would rather add more mods to the MSP to improve the power and performance than to give up that go-kart feel. This makes the decision harder now.

I think it needs new engine mount after watching a dyno video with the hood open. It rocks back and forth a LOT!

just because it rocks back and forth, doesn't mean the motions are not controlled.... the movements are all dampened and when on/off throttle actions doesn't mean the engine is going to flop out of the car..... during shifting, you get a reassuring solid "thump"... not quite as good as my OEM parts bin motor mount setup in my pro, but it's pretty good considering that I've already know what other uprated rubber motor mounts feel like (nismo mounts on a 240SX and JDM mazdaspeed motor mounts on a 1st gen protege which are designed for high power turbo use)... but these mounts are enough to still cause wheelspin during shifts... if you want to be an idiot and powershift, then you might as well spend lots of money upgrading lots of other shit before they break, or better yet, buy a different car for drag racing

engines don't have to be bolted into the car solid with no movement to provide good performance/drivability, smooth/dampened movements is what's better for circuit racing because smoother/gradual power can be applied to the ground. having them "solid" means other parts breaking easily on a high power car, such as axles, tranny cases, bent frames, etc... and that could also mean losing road races because of slower corning speed due to wheelspin during throttle modulations

we had a MS3 sitting on the lot for a couple weeks (red), and i SO wanted to take it for a spin, more to compare against my P5 than anything. unfortunately, it was already sold :(

thanks for the review, now i really want to take one for a whirl

now thats the type of review you want to hear...different type of comparison especially with the cars most of us drive everyday and parts we have installed.....

Excellent write-up. The MS3 is sure to be an excellent autobobile. I wish I could afford one.

Thank you for the no-bullshit review theMAN. Now THAT is an enthusiast's review.

what stuck out to me was this. Instant throttle response-- really gotta have that. I wish they made the newer MS cars with cable instead of the ETB. Screw cruise control and tip-in. ETBs really dampen the fun. I have to actually put some weight on the gas pedal on my 3 to rev-match instead of jabbing it like i do on cable-driven cars.

I will try to get some pics tomorrow... the salesmanager put the car into the showroom the following day, so this makes me the last person to drive it before it'll be some new owner's

it ONLY has 16 miles on it right now

So would you say that, due to the size of the tire, the tray will not fit in the MS3? I was hoping to utilize the tray for my sound system, but if it's not there and it won't fit, I'll have to rethink the setup.

I've been excited about these since I learned they were using the hatch for the speed3. This writeup made me anxious to actually get IN one. I went to my local dealer yesterday, but sadly, no speed3's until the end of the month. Luckily one of my old highschool buddies works there now, so I'll now right when they get there!

the ms3 also features air defusers under the floor pan to reduce aerodynamic lift.. you can see that is a plastic piece bolted under the car... unfortunately, you can't add that to a regular 3... not sure on the 07 models though because I haven't had a good chance to look at them yet

Nice write-up. I was under the impresssion all models came with heated seats... Maybe i will be getting a grand touring after all.

actually no models of the ms3 come with heated seats i was told...i just bought a mica black grand touring yesterday and it did not have heated seats. i was told that was not an option.......but the review above is really dead on....the ms3 is faster than the ms6 and very fun to drive. power comes on quick and hard. ill have detailed pics up soon(camera in route).you can tell its torque limited in 1st and 2nd but it still pulls hard.....very hard for a factory car. the car is very tight and torque steer is almost not existent....for the amount of power were talking....its there but very little. the lsd engages quick and silent and puts the power down quick. im very impressed with the ms3 and am currently looking to buy an intake, exhaust, and blow off valve. the dealer i bought from is only getting 4 ms3 the year.....they wanted to mark it up but i flat out said no....i paid 500 below msrp....24,000. theres only about 1400 markup on the gt model in the msrp(not including holdback and dealer incentives). the amount of car your getting for the price is incredibly........pics soon and drag strip as soon as shes broke in...stay tuned!!! lol

Awesome review with nice tech tidbits (thumb)...No doubt other sport compacts and their owners are going to think twice about running against this Mazda ;)
