2002 MP5. Yes I searched. I am at 102k miles and will be looking at timing belt, seals and water pump soon. I get some blue smoke on a cold start up which goes away after just a minute of running. This is valve guide seals right? I've replaced them on mitsubitchis but never on a mazda. Is it also just a matter of using a valve spring compressor and replacing the seals? Do I have to have the head off to replace these or can I get away with the piston at TDC?

you have to remove the cams to do this . You also need an adapter that will allow you to put compressed air into the cylinder using the sparkplg hole . this will keep the valves up and allow you to remove the springs and the seals ,then install the new seals and finally the springs . Once you have replaced all the seals reinstall teh cams . If you have the timing belt do the seals at the same time .

Yeah, it's actually easiest to change those with the head off. I did so when I was porting out my spare head. The best thing you can do is get a set of spring compressors, gank the original valve seals off, then slide the new ones. Wouldn't hurt to lap the valves so they seat nicely, too. Yes, you'll have to remove: cams, shims, buckets, keepers, retainers, springs, then old valve seals. All in that order. I got a set of Toga seals, and they've been working out really well, so far.

Thanks for the advice it helps. I forgot about the compressed air trick too. I'm also going to look around junk yards for a spare head that I can send in for some love.

Yes these mods are hard earned and you cannot just bolt them on.
