I miss you guys...Introduce yourself and post pics of your ride...Make us happy! :D
Hi, my name is Charles, I'm from Montréal in Québec, Canada, and I drive a 1997 Protegé LX Touring Edition (US model ES). So I have a great BP engine and a 5 speed manual tranny, 4 disk brakes, A/C, everything electric, MP3 player and more...
I've only lowered the car (Apex with KYB GR2) and put 15'' mags.

*sigh* I suppose I should post mine.
Its a 98 DX, so i don't have any options, except for that misfire that we get when we run the Z5 1.5L
Oh well =)
shes been treating me good lately so ive kept up with keeping her clean
-Its lowered on KYB GR-2s (not that you can tell.....actually...everyone i tell that doesnt know how tall these things are stock thinks i'm trying to screw with 'em)
-1st gen LX wheels painted a metallic black, that needs to be re-done really bad
-20% rear window, 40% sides....i wanted to stay legal, i need to stay out of as much trouble car wise as possible
-Second hand muffler
-The Wal*Mart special sound set-up...minus the pioneer HU. doesnt sound too bad for not costing much at all
-LX cluster swap w/ gauge faces
-Shaved side mouldings and trim level sticker
and the good parts are....
-JDM Tails
-JDM headlights
-JDM clear side markers(turn signals, what have you) And the real ones at that...I got the bulge to prove it =)
-I just got an average of 37MPG this past weekend, filled up from running on fumes, cost me $22.50
thats right...i don't mind my dyno proven 79HP with those numbers behind it
The headlights have city lights, which look amazing with the amber bulb i put in there, and i like their output better than the NA ones....but ive heard they stink....i guess im just strange like that though.
these are the newest pics I have, not that great, but eh

two right after i painted the wheels, still lowered at this point, with amber turns+NA tails ( come to think of it, I cant tell if its lowered yet in these pics...pretty sure it is)

Ok folks. I know you'll laugh so be prepared.
Here are some photos of my $100 car
I bought this ole girl on ebay in March with front end damage for $100, with gas and all to pick it up I had $120 in it.
It needed, both fenders, front bumper/cover, grille, hood, both headlights and marker lights, a radiator, core support, a powersteering pump, washer resovior, radiator overflow, an air box and the frame rails yanked.
Being I went to school for auto collision and was in good with the teacher I took it out to the school to have the old core support cut off the rails striaghtened and the new support welded on. the corse support cost me $120 and the work was free.
I then bought the $99 brandnew ebay radiator and had them install it (cuase i was lazy) and drove it home. Total including antifreeze was now at about $350
Off to the junk yard I got all of the body panels needed as well as the airbox and other stuff under the hood for a total of $220.
I bought a $20 mixed to match can of spray paint from the local auto paint supplier to cut the fenders in, for a grand total of $590 dollars.
After a couple months the muffler fell off and a guy gave me his cheapo fartcan, so i'm running it right now, and I added a ebay strut bar for shits n giggles.
She aint purty buy 50 thousand miles later, she is still running just as good as she was. Ive done nothing but routine oil changes since the purchase in March.
Just recently I replaced the plugs and wires becuase I had extra cash and theyd never been done, and last week the alt took a poo, and cost me $68 for a lifetime rebuild.
Its due for tires now as well, but I'm waiting until I can find some 14 or 15" stockish rims for it.
Being its a sohc, automatic car, I have no plans to race it anywhere and its just my DD driver thats awesome on gas. I do plan to paint it and add a couple bolt ons for looks but nothing more. The Escort is going to be fore that since its a 5speed and has the dohc engine.
Anyhow here she is.

Its defiantly needs paint, but for less than $600 what can one exspect.

We call her Beta (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=78871&d=1147107079)
this is my wife's 98 pro ES~BP POWER~. I've been tinkering with it every since we got together, mostly upkeep, but my pholosophy is "if it breaks, UPGRADE". Upgraded plugs and wires, OEM battery out of my P5, KYBs (on stock springs), 15' Miata rims rollin on Toyo TS1, Magnaflow resonator and muffler, K&N filter, new water pump & belts, Clear Corners, Blaupunkt speakers Kenwood reciever, world shittiest tint job.
She's tired but has served us well. I have dreams of rebuilding the engine with miata parts, but my funds are lacking.
Liquid_Ag
11-16-2006, 04:06 PM
the only difference in the miata parts is the solid lifter and cams basically. the power difference really isnt that much. you should do 1g bp parts, and port and polish, and polish the intake manifold. and lower it!

I miss my 94 and its solid performance. Handled 10x better than the P5 I got to replace her in 2003.
Mods included:
-MX-3 V6 seats re-upholstered
-Mazdaspeed strut mounts
-F/R Strut tower braces
-Tokico blues
-H&R Springs
-ST rear sway bar
-Larger diameter solid front sway bar
-2000 Protege ES 15-inch alloys on 205/50-15 tires
-Brembo rotors
-Steel-braided brake lines
Motor had some minor bolt-ons, but they really didn't do much. This car's forte is handling so that was my focus.

Ouch! I don't think these had side-impact beams and I always wondered what would happen if I got t-boned. Sucks.
Good luck with the BP build! Those motors are stout and should handle boost very well. I always wanted to put a GTX/GTR motor in mine but never had the dinero to do it. The KLZE swap was always tempting.

Hello, I just bought a 96 LX with the 1.5L that I use for commutes to/from work and for road trips. I have **PLENTY** of questions about this car, I'd like to take care of this Protege as well as I can.
Auto, but that's OK because sometimes 5spd gets cumbersome.
it has 77k on it, which isnt bad from what I have ben seeing
I am new to 'new' cars, I have more experience with aircooled VWs...but this is a VERY welcomed change for me :)

(hi) Welcome and Nice 323! Love the stance and overall look plus that color...it's different but complements the car well and I really like what you've done so far! (thumb)
Can you post a list of your current mods?
I'm seeing more modified 323 on the Forums now and it makes me think of my Sister's first car...a 1991 323...now long gone but it would make for a great project car.

Thanks soccom. Weather is just as cold as Michigan, it was about 33-34 degrees when I washed it, no DIY thread bro. I talked a little about how I painted them, but I am going to repaint the drums black because they stand out too much and my calipers up in front were replaced and I never got around to painting the new ones.

I Bought this 12 mths ago for my #2 daughter, NZ assembled '94 Mazda Astina 2000cc V6, 160,000km = 100,000ml
Daughter was involved in a nose to tail accident and insurance co. has written car off, gonna cost too much to fix. NZ$2500 - $3000. Picture shows it being towed away to insurance co. yard for assessor to value it and she'll get the money. Mechanically still a very nice car, even though it's been a high maintenance car with lil' things breaking every 4-5 mths at regular intervals, clutch hydraulic hose giving out, spark plug lead replaced, radiator leak plugged, oil temp sensor gasket giving out and dropping all it's oil on the drive. Cam belt due for replacement in 30 thou km. But when it was going, 2L V6 purred like a kitten.

Turbo it, please :)
The turbo will come at some point..Right now Im just going to go with a nice strong rebuild and a nice tune with megasquirt.. If its done right I think I can see power to the wheels in the 150 range.
I just really want to get the single cam out of it bad.. i will go back and turbo when I have more spare money
Vocko
02-08-2009, 04:25 AM
You took the BP out of a Ford Escort GT ?
Cause there are BP variants ranging from 105, 115, 127 and 140HP, at least here in europe.

Ill have some new tires on tomorrow, ill take some pics.
No mine came out of a 1993 protege. I was just saying after the tune and all 150 is what I would get to all 4's.. but now Im getting a turbo setup for it, so Im thinking that I might see more like 200+ to all 4's...
Vocko
02-13-2009, 05:24 AM
Noooo you're not gonna turbo it :D
haha yes I will, got the engine. Just order a turbo, injectors, GTR intake. Then after that a set of wiesco pistons..and hopefuly a good deal on some decent rods, then a megasqurtII and I should be ready to make some real power.
I would like to go all out with a crank, and cams, and soild lifters, and stiff springs..but im not trying to spend all that money.. right now I think I can get 200whp for under 2000$... but if I wanted to spend 10,000$ I bet I could see 370 out of my little car..
Vocko
02-13-2009, 05:42 PM
You can manage without the GTR intake for starters ;)
And you should be concetrating on doing something about the transmission, because the most common problem with stock GTX and GTR is transmission malfunction, something brakes too often, forgot what. I think it has something to do with the back differential... Friend of mine broke it and it costed arm and a leg to get it repaired...

Get Euro bumpers they're lighter.
Take off the plastic under the fender and hit that dent from inside, and its not gonna look that bad anymore.
You can also try to heat it up a little bit with a heatgun and massage it till it falls back to its old (normal) state.
And whats up with the driver side fender around the wheel arch ??

02-15-2009, 10:40 AM
Lol there was alot of rust there when I got the car, and I couldnt find the color, so I eye balled it, and thats what happened, I have the right color now and am just waiting for warmer weather to start on the body work. It really needs alot of body work, and thats not what im good at. Im a mechanic and thats where my car excells lol, body not so much lol.
So your saying the GTX and GTR transmisions are no good? Well then what could I used without lossing my AWD..? Right now my trany is in tip top shape..Im thinking if it starts to see like its going I could just take it out maybe a few new syncros and get the gears cryo treated..
Yeah everyone told me to go with out the intake so I didnt get it.. and now Im also stuck with a hybrid vj20 missing the housing for the hotside :(.. it was just rebuilt and polished though..
Vocko
02-16-2009, 05:25 AM
Unfortunatly thats the problem. They're good until you start launching (like in a drag race), then they brake like a child brakes a candy bar :(
Bear in mind that you have a G25MX-R (check on that I'm not 100% sure) and it should be possible to use strenghtened 3rd and 5th gears from the G15M-R (found in MP3 and MSP) and also you should do something about the diffs, try to find some aftermarket ones.
Also if I remember correctly there is something that needs to be done with the bell housing to strenghten it, but I will look into it and post it here with a few links.
I've seen a few people use Subaru tranny instead, but I think thats a really expensive solution if you're not gonna go way past the 300HP.
I've read that people make hybrids with VJ20 and another one, try google-ing out something, it cant hurt ;)
@91Protege - Then it's time to learn a new trade - bodywork@home101 :)
A friend of mine was pissed on his bodywork guy (here we call them "limar" and in slang we call them "marli" (like bob marley :))), anyhow he was so pissed that he went on and bought him self a welding machine and did the whole bodywork by himself. Cant find the pictures, though. In the end it looked like shit :) and he lost the same amount of time on correcting errors as he did on making them. The next car he worked on was a 4, on a 5 point scale. You just need to have patience and time ;)
hmmm...yeah money is my big deal right now. I dont plan on launcing the car that much..I never do anything like drag racing. All my racing is done like this...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/sweethunnybabe/Inthedust.jpg
and yes the turbo I bought is a vf11 in a vj20 shell. So its the hybrid like your talking about.. Here are some pictures of that and the BP

My whole goal with the car is to build it, keep it classy, and keep it true to its roots(A classic mazda).. I dont know.. Im just very torn on what I should do.

I like NA much better than turbo, but for a high output NA you need a lot of displacement. Who said KL-ZE ? 2500ccm and 200hp in a V6 and to fit it you'll spend more money than on a full BP turbo rebuild.
Also you've got 4WD and that calls for a turbo (Impreza style).
If you're not drag racing than you shouldn't worry that much about the tranny, cause it doesnt tolerate launching, but I would in any case strenghten it as soon as money allows it, just to be on a safe side and it's cheaper to strenghten it, than to rebuild it ;)
Finally found a sweet spot to snap a new pic of the car.

I mean I could build the BP to get me about 160-190 WHP NA.. yeah I know its about the turbo 4wd drive.. but why not NA 4wd? I used to own a subaru legacy GT, it had the big 2.5l na awd.. it was still pretty fun. Also..with the kind of driving I enjoy to do NA would prob be the better route for me to go.

160-190WHP, please tell the world your secret I bet everyone would want to know, especially with a AWD car.
Ok, enough sarcasam, you probably meant HP@crank ;)
Guys over here had problems making 170HP with NA on a BA, let alone 170WHP and thats with FWD which has less gearbox loss than AWD.
I think for your application NA would be better, cause driving a NA is more straightforward than with a turbo car which has turbo hole and turbo lag and you always have to check that you're in the right RPM. For that is easier with NA, but to get that kind of performance out of NA it will cost you as much, if not more than a turbo, to build a highspec NA and then you're stuck.
With turbo you have a lot more room to boost your specs, if you know what I mean.

Yea I know, when I redo it, it will be right. Sweet pic man.
I think with stiff valve springs, soild lifters, 10:1 compression pistons, a good bit of milling, new cams, headers, exaust, and megasquirt I should have no prob seeing atleast 160 to the wheels.

Default compression is 10.5 on a regular BP (115hp), on the 140hp is 11.0, with different intake cam. Header and exhaust maximum 15hp and with MS another 5-7hp... Your best bet is around 170HP@crank.
Because all the things you said, my friend did and without MS he got 162-3HP@crank.
I'll find the pics and post them.
alright. We might have different engines due to our location.. I know most BP here are 9:1. The 10:1 pistions I got came out of a miata BP they were never in the protege..I dont think I might be wrong, anyone know the answer?
The way it goes here also is.. the 115hp is a 1.6L BP. And the 140hp is a 1.8L BP.

I'll find the pics and post them.the jdm/edm motors are much less restrictive and have less emission equipment giving them more power

Recently had an engine swap, here is the BP-ZE. Just had a phone cam on hand to see the BP-ZE just shipped from Japan with the valve cover popped, untouched and uncleaned as far as I can discern...until now:

Hey, new to the Mazda world. So I'm kinda walking about blind. I'll post pics when I get them on the computer. But for now, its a 96 Protege (of course) DX with 177k miles, 5spd tranny with a slight grind in 2nd. But I hope to make her my pride and joy some day.
Can anyone help me with some basic bolt on's I can get for now, and if you've boosted yours. Send me a list of your complete set up, so I have it down the road to reffer to?
