A1GP to rival Formula 1?

-AutoBlog
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2006/09/a1gpaustralia.jpgThe A1 Grand Prix series, which enjoyed its debut season last year, has announced that it intends to upgrade its one-design racecars to a level closer to that of Formula 1. (The current A1GP Lola/Zytek is shown at right, in last week's group test at Silverstone.)

The current Lola chassis will be replaced by a bigger and more aerodynamic Lola unit, while the Zytek 3.4-liter V8 will get a considerable boost, from the current 520 hp to around 720 hp. With the driver-actuated power boost feature of the A1GP cars, that figure will likely peak at about 750 hp, roughly equivalent to the rev-limited V8 engines mandated by the new F1 rules package.

While A1GP races in the F1 "off-season" - the 2007/2008 series begins October 1 in the Netherlands - there is no doubt that the self-proclaimed "World Cup of Motorsport" will be competing with the F1 championship for the hearts and minds of motorsports fans worldwide.

A1GP obviously has a long way to go to build up a TV audience and international fan base to rival that of Formula 1, but the series' first year boasted big fields and entertaining racing - something that F1 has lately struggled to provide.

A1GP needs better marketing not cars... the first season was very entertaining but OLN had broadcasting rights, not the premeire source for motor racing by any means.

Ha, its an international series where teams, split by nationality, compete with spec-chassis & tire openwheel cars. Last year was the first year of the series and it was funded exclusively by the prince of Dubai.

Its decent racing that makes for a good fix during the F1 off season. www.a1gp.com

A1 = Driver's race, spec race

F1 = Driver and technology race.

Until they let teams design and uild thier own engine and chasis it wount be anywhere near F1.

Just becuase its light and has a bunch of HP doesnt mean its even close to taking on F1.

Prince should have stuck with the family business instead of blowing daddy's money on his own race series.

j/k I do like watching A1 but every tries to compare ever open wheel base cart with lots of hp to F1.

Lola builds amazing GT and prototype chasis and certain open cart ones too...but they have no positive expereience in F1 to even make a chasis that could compete with F1.

Lola is creating a chsis for 2008 F1 season and has no buyers...rumor has it prodrive may buy chasis from them.

the Lola chasis looks hot like the star chasis.
