how do you remove the stock cd player out of a 2000 protege? Is tools required?

This is the MAZDASPEED Protege section. It has a different radio.

Since you have a 2000 Protege, you need Ford Radio removal tools to take out the stereo. Try searching for "remove stock stereo" and you'll find plenty of info.
