Well, I have owned my 2003 MSP for about 4 months now. I want to give you a list of my current mods and future plans. I plan on running close to stock boost or no more than 8 psi. For this is my daily driver and will remain to be so. I want feedback and suggestions on better buys and mods just to make this a lot more fun to drive and a more reliable msp. thanks.

Currently (not much at all):
Catless mam mid-pipe w/ corksport axle back.
AWR rear mount 90 (bought brand new from a friend for a good price)
03.5 lip (not proformance enhancing obviously but nice touch)

Future:
Upgraded SMIC
Hard pipes of some type
CAI
Mazdaspeed adjustable struts
EBC

So all the feedback you have would be great. Thanks

get a ems. if you dont wanna tune get a unichip. the ic,ebc and cai wont get you far without tuning.

microtech is the most comprehensive and feature driven EMS for the protege with excellent proven results;

or we are running a sale on the unichip, PM me for details

Wow, do you think it is really user friendly for a first time user?

since you are in the states, you could start with a unichip. That will get you boosting 14psi spike, 10@ redline safely ~200WHP. Then if you add anything later like a fmic bigger injectors etc just get it retuned by a local dealer.

i would go with the fmic and a better radiator(full length!) then ems(i run the mpi but each ems has their ups and downs imho!!

microtech is not that bad to use, we have plenty of first time users that attest to its ease of install and use. the base map provided is more than adequete to drive and run the car on while you make adjustments.

or for something more pedestrian as jeff says, there is the unichip, which has a good feature set for what it is

But would the unichip really be worth it if you do not have a place close in which to get it tuned? Do you think a FMIC and Radiator are over kill for an daily driven MSP that isn't planning on upping the boost much?

i overheated my ES-T with my stock radiator, so i upgraded to a pwr and i have had no problems, i imagine that the msp smaller radiator gives some problems with daily driving. but i do boost way too much so i dunno!!

I see I see. I take it that the radiator you upgraded too won't fit with an SMIC?

well i didnt have a smic to begin with but i had a stock ES radiator. so it was full size but i was having issues at 15psi!

we sell an upgraded SMIC as well as an aluminum radiator that will fit next to it. personally i would not go FMIC unless you plan on much bigger boost numbers.

Oh ok thanks for the input. I honestly don't want 15psi. Too risky from what I have been reading ....

water wetter and low temp thermostat make a good difference.

So do you think that the radiator is really a must do for a daily driver? Is the stock that poor quality?

And .... does anyone recommend any type of intake over another?

The stock one is just fine for a daily driver, and it's better than the full length ones that come stock on the regular proteges.

So far we came up with an:
EMS
Upgraded Intercooler
Water wetter and low temp thermostat

Any other suggestions ... come on with it!

an exhaust couldn't hurt or you could gut out a cat if you prefer the stock exhaust. I had a corksport exhaust before i had my 3" turboback and loved it.

I have a mam catless mid pipe and the corksport axle back. I like it. Its not too loud and its constant.
