I have a car charger for my cell phone and when I went to charge my phone using the lighter socket down on the side of the dash, there seemed to be no power going there as my phone didn't charge. Before you ask, the phone and the charger both work perfectly fine. Just wondering if anyone knew why this is.

The ciggarette lighter is hooked up to accessory, and does not function when the car is off, try hooking up the hot side stright to the battery, that might work.

It doesn't function with the car on or off.

Look into it with a flash light and see if the contact in the back is dirty. If it is then unplug the battery and go at it with something abrasive. If its not dirty then, assuming you checked the fuse, get at the wires behind the lighter and with the ignitiion in ACC position hook a multimeter up and see if the leads are getting power. If not then something is messed up with your wiring. If it is then its time to go to a junkyard for a new lighter.

Look into it with a flash light and see if the contact in the back is dirty.

Those contacts tend to look dirty no matter what. Unless you see shiny metal try cleaning it. If nothing else this will give you a known good contact which you can use to trace the problem back from the lighter socket with your trusty voltmeter. Be careful with the voltmeter probe in the lighter socket - you really don't want to short the center contact to the side contact, and that's pretty easy to do with some longish voltmeter probes.

check your fuses. if they are ok you have to replace the cigarette lighter socket itself. part # F146-66-250
its pretty easy but can be a pain the ass. :) you have to twist it just right to pull it out of the dash

I had the same problem-- no power coming to the cigarette lighter. It was the fuse. I found it by checking all the fuses and seeing which one was blown. Strangely, the fuse that was blown is labeled as "H/CLN". It's the 20amp bright yellow one, top row, middle:

Unfortunately, while putting the cigarette lighter back in, I broke off a tab on the plastic retaining ring and now it won't stay in place =(.
