View Full Version : Ticking or vibration noise!

Hey guys,

I noticed last night that I had a ticking or vibration noise whenever I accelerate or cruise by letting off the gaz! It seems to be coming from the left side (passenger side) but I dont know where exactly because I cannot reproduce it when Im at stop!

I already checked for a loose in the heat shield and my exhaust manifold have been checked for leak last week so I would doubt it would be those 2 thinks!

I did install some new shifter bushings the same afternoon though. I installed the complet kit (2 bigs + 4 smalls). My shifter is working great, but I was wondering if the stiffess bushings could cause a vibration underneath the engine !? Did someone already experience something like that?

thanks :)

Hummm would be hard to get a sound clip, but I can try I guess to work something out! Im still under waranty yes!

Its not a very loud sound though. Was yours very loud?

And you think the new bushings could not be the cause?

by the way thats not my car its joka's. i deleted my sound clip but it sounds the same. highly doubt shift bushings would make noise i have all of them and never made a sound in a year. but until i hear it who knows. did you keep the heatsheild above the shift linkage on? my shifter would hit it in 1st and 2nd so i had to take it off. that was more of a metallic rattle though.

Here is 2 videos of my car on the highway. I made thses out of my parent's digital camera, but we cannot really hear the sound:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2235855779906665806&hl=en

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1417569150993543509&hl=fr

The sound is coming from the right side where Im always filming, but the speed exhaust is relatively loud and the microphone on the cam isnt that good either so... like I said its not very loud! And it does it only when I let off the gas, not like the video posted earlier! On the second video we can hear it a bit when I drop the camera near the floor! The sound can actually be compared to a playing card hitting a bicycle wheel while turning if I can say! If it would be something bad like piston or whatever, would not the sound be also there while reving or accelerating? Cause now, even a slight touch of the pedal stop it... its like its only there when the A/F ratio is lean!

my cousin's p5 has the same noise as joka's. He said when he take his foot of the clutch slowly he would hear it, and sometime when he shift to 2nd and gas. Also sometime when he turns hard (which I think it's the muffler hitting the rear bumper), but he's driving him crazy.

Just got back from the dealer, I had a broken exhaust hanger. Dont know where exactly but near the J-Pipe. They didnt have the part so Im gonna have to wait till next week to have it replaced, but Im pretty sure its that :)!

No it was the bracket that holds the J-Pipe! Do you know which one Im talking about? And no I dont have awr mounts, I would, but it would cost me to make them install, especially the rear one (huh) !

Anyway, hope this hanger will take care of the noise!

"na most"? Must be a typo, but just wanna be sure what you meant :)!

And I will check for motor mounts if its not that expensive to install!

you can also get motor mount incerts cheaper, they help out ALOT, and RR-Racing sells the front and rear for 55$ shipped.

Whats the difference between insert and real motor mounts?

Whats the difference between insert and real motor mounts?

Full mounts remove the stock mount completly and replace it with a MUCH stiffer mount and Polyurithain instread of crappy rubber.

Draw backs to it are ALOT of increased cabin vibrations.

Motor mount incerts are basically polyurithain peices that incert into your stock existing mounts to stiffen them up, they look like this

This is the front

I got the incerts from Rafi at RR-Racing, they were 65$CAN shipped

This is only for the front and rear, Im getting the side mount incerts from AWR, because RR-Racing doesnt make them.

Install time for the rear is arroun 1 hour, and for the front its about 30min.

You can easily do the front and sides yourself, and I would sugest a shop do the rear, because its a real PITA.

You need to (or have the installer) use lock washers on those J-pipe bracket bolts. My first one broke, then got F&R mounts, then kept losing them. Finally used lock washers and they stayed put.

How do you insert them? Do you have to remove something or lift the engine?

You un bolt the mount and they incert into the existing rubber mount, (They are shapped to fit in) You dont need to remove the mount at all just un-bolt it and wedge her in.

They are very worth every effort put in, Increadible difference in lanch and much better shifts (no engine lash during shifts)

It might sounds stupid lol, but when you say unbolt the mount and insert it, do you mean, take it out from under the hood completely? Im asking that, because, if its an engine mount, if you take it out, wouldnt the engine becomes loose !? Im sure its a simple installation, but I just can seem to figure out how you install them lol!

thanks

You dont have to remove the mount completly. The mount connects to the Body with a few bolts and then the engine is mounted with these big round rubber thingies surrounding the bolt holding the engine to the mount (Big bolt going through the center of the rubber mounts) Its Only the Bolts going through the center of the rubber that need be unbolted. When that bolt is removed you wedge in the incerts and once in you bolt it back up. The mount will still be attached to the frame of the car.

Its tough to type it with enough detail, I hope you follow.

HOWEVER just so you know (In case anybody wants to come in saying yeah they can be removed and put in) YES, you can remove the mounts completly and pop in the incerts, but you dont have to remove them completely and that would just make the job longer for no reason.

Cool, thanks for the info, grandly appreciated :)! By the way, do you have side mounts in your car or just front and rear? And for the rear one, I suppose you have to remove stuff to access it?

No Problem, glad to help.

I dont have the sides YET, but I will by the end of the summer.

As for the rear you dont have to remove the sub frame but it does free up some space, and is no big deal to remove (a couple of bolts). You will need a breaker bar or some air tools because that bitch is on tight with not alot of room to play.

Honestly for that one I would get a garage to do it, its a real pain in the ass (Im talking a BITCH!!!!) It should run maybe 50$ for a garage and you will never regret it.

Are you going to bring her out to St-Eu once this summer?

Hey :)
So youre from Quebec if you go to st-eu then ;)! Ive never gone on my side and dont plan to go this summer. Im not too much of a racer lol!

thanks

NP, Glad to help.

I know a place in MTL that will do it for you, they will have it done in a hour, its should be arround 70$ for the install (its a bit expensive, but thats there rate for when the parts dont come from them), check arround you might be able to get it cheaper.

Yup Im living in MTL, I hit St-Eu pretty often, Im kinda the upset King over there ;) There are some videos of me tearing up the track there, check em out....

Martin

My mod list is in my Sig, nothing beyond that (yet) UDP and mid pipe will be going in this summer, I hope to knock off a few tenths from my 1/4 mile with them.

Just got back from the dealer and got my new bracket! Unfortunatly, the noise is still there so the only other change that I did at that time was to change my shifter bushings for Kartboy ones (the 6 of them). Do you think a loose screw or the fact that the bushings are stiffer could produce a vibration or a particular noise !?

thanks

Wingman21
08-12-2006, 01:20 PM
Ok just got back from underneath my car, and I tighted the screw of the bushings just under the shifter. It was loose! Now the ticking noise is gone but I do still have a small vibration noise sometime, but I assume its must be because of the stiffer bushings transmiting more the vibration of the engine!
