Good read...Check it out! http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/ubb/icons/icon2.gif mazdaspeed3 first drive on edmunds (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123640862)
"But while the extent of cosmetic surgery parallels the GTI vs. the standard Golf, the hot 3's on-road performance makes this four-door the quickest hot hatch on the market. Tipping the scales at a mere 3,060 pounds, the MPS is 154 pounds lighter than the GTI, and boasts a 64-horsepower and a whopping 74 pound-feet of torque power advantage over its German rival."

They claim to have been the first journalist allowed to test drive the car but were not allowed to publish until closer to the official release date.
They say it's the best factory built street car suited for the track right off the showroom floor.

^^^ except for the m3, those are more track cars you can drive on the street. also, they're sport compact car and their target audience probably isn't looking at anything over $40k for a car. that said, it sounds like a great car, but i've never been sold on the look of the 3 wagon. but that works in it's favor because it helps with the sleeper factor.

It seems to me like the MS6 might get called out for being a bit friendly in their hp ratings. This did happen to the RX8, so I just have this feeling the MS3 being rated at 250hp is gonna be producing near that or right at the MS6 in HP. We shall see. :)

Edmunds says 250hp at 5500, and 280 torque at 3000, so which one is right? It's just strange to me when I look at various dyno charts and see the 250hp Legacy GT putting out just as much, and sometimes better whp numbers while rated 24hp less. Either Mazda is being over generous, or Subaru is underrating their cars. It's probably a combination of both. :)

I feel your pain, Brother. It looks a little "plump" for my tastes too.
But I can't agree w/you that it looks sleeker than the existing 3 HB, which to my eye looks much less bulky. I like the way my HB looks better than the MS3 on several fronts, not the least of which are those wheels. But I would wish mine had the power, handling and TURBO!!

Edmund's site has been saying that since the beginning of the MS3 rumors. I'm sure that was just Mazdas target estimate for the HP. I don't think Edmund's has updated their site since more is now known about the MS3. They could be waiting for an actual production model to test before they do.

I thought I would hold onto my Protege for 6-7 years but I don't think I'm going to make it. I'm three months from 4 years and my zero percent finance will be paid off..... I think I'll have to sell it when it's 5 years old and get a 2008 MS3. That, or a slightly used 2007 if I can find one. Problem is.... I think it's going to be hard to get book value for it... it's not a Honda. Is it wrong to wish someone would total me.... carefully?
I'm not 100% sold on the looks.... but just sick power and it's just over 3000 pounds.... I'm guessing with a cat back, hi-flow cat, intake, and MS6 flash it will be around 300hp. Not to mention the track handling sounds incredible.

It's 263hp. I believe SCM dynoed the car. I had the magazine, but i left it at work. I'll double check tomorrow. Makes sense since mazda claims "over 250 hp"
I also read the C&D with the one page MS3 write up stating 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds. Can anyone else verify if this was an official test number, or just an estimate? Motor Trend has a manufacterer estimate of 5.8 seconds in their most recent issue, no official test from them though.

It also seems like dodge is taking its sweet time with this caliber srt-4. They're probably crappin' themselves right now and waiting to see how well the ms3 performs before they 'officially' release it. MS3 has got so much more technology in it than the srt-4. Dodge may have to do some serious thinking about where they're going to be pricing this thing. MS3 should smoke it in just about every catagory regardless.

Sorry to drag up the topic. But frankly im just pissed at mazda for making the MS3 a 5 door. Im sorry but you cant have a "hot hatch" unless its a 3 door. Im sure yall have seen the photoshops of it being 3 door........it looks bad ass! but with 5 doors its just crap. they should of stayed true to the 323 roots and made it a 3 door. then again i drive a BG 323.........maybe im held up in the past. Or maybe mazda was just being stupid, just like the rx-8 door design. i love mazda but they make some dumb ass choices in style

Nope Mazda isn't being stupid, they're reacting to the market and trying to release a car that appeals to a wide audience. Most people with kids won't look at a 3 door becasue it's hell trying to buckle in a child or install a child seat. That's one reason why I wouldn't consider the VW R32. Nice car but impractical for me. That's also why Mazda created the rear doors on the RX-8- flexibility/practicality.
Then again, I'm not crazy about the 5 door's styling. I own the 4 door and think it's much better looking- more European and upscale, while the 5 door looks like an economy car. That doesn't mean I wouldn't consider the Mazdaspeed3- after all power does corrupt (drive2). The lack of a sunroof does take it down a couple of notched however. Got to have my sunroof.

I agree with you about the sunroof part. It's something I wanted badly in mine and was not able to get, but the sedan vs. HB thing... well, just look at what I drive. :D I think it's Damn sexy and bolder looking than the sedan.
Then again, I like the sedans too.
And, oops!! I saw you were not the original poster of those spec sheets. :o

Yes but those mid-30's males usually have a Wife and a couple of trophies.
:)
I don't care for the looks too much but DAMN a 155MPH top out is damn good for a sport compact.
Maybe with some spring and some wheels it would look less portly.
And to be fair all of the "sport" compacts are just gussied up grocery getters. They are family cars.

While Mazda may have had those ages in mind for the intial release of the 3, I think they now realize their new crop of Mazdas appeal to a much wider demographic. I've seen everyone from teenagers to grandparents driving 3's, 5's and CX-7's.

I am a former hatchback guy myself, and I actually like the fact that the Mazdaspeed 3 is in the 5 door format. As a daily driver, I prefer hatchbacks (true sportscars- coupes and roadsters as fun weekend cars), but since the market has been producing fast 4 door sedans, I've been buying them as daily drivers (04 STI and now 06 MS6). This is definitely car I am gonna be looking into when my lease ends on the MS6. However, rumor has it that the STI is gonna be a hatchback/coupe, so if that holds true I'll be back to Subaru. Still though, the thought of a car with the power of my MS6, more of a fun factor, better handling, and faster with 400+ lbs less weight for that price may be too tempting. :)

I totally agree. A 5 door hatch is much more pleasing to the eye and just plain practical for everyday use and this one is gorgeous. I have my Speed3 reserved at the deal and it's slated for a production date of October 9th and be in my hands a couple weeks after. The price is more than fair and realisticly there is nothing else out there that offers more value for the dollar. Man I'm gonna loose some sleep waiting for this one.

23 years ago, the GTI was the pocket rocket to have. A fun little car that was fairly cheap to buy and to operate. Easy and cheap to fix when it needed it. I have read that the newest version is a blast like no other GTI before it and I have no doubt about this, but VW's reliability rep has gone way down hill too.
I'd say, you guys made the right choice for today's pocket rocket.

Define please? (rlaugh)
OK, to me the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof is that a sunroof is a metal panel installed in the roof that opens up by means of a crank or an electric motor, usually retracting into the roof. Where as a moonroof is the same thing only w/a glass panel, and possibly an inside sunshade. This could very well be old school thinking however. I believe these definitions have been muddied w/time.
No. MS3's are not being offered w/either of these features and probably never will be. As previously discussed (somewhere) there is a cross, or X brace in the roof to help stiffen the chassis. A sun/moon roof would compromise that brace.
That's the price you pay for the MS3... that and 23K+/-. (lol)

Ok, I get the joke...
The STi Limited will come with a sunroof. I doubt it will have much effect on chassis stability. My understanding was that the sunroof was eliminated from the original STi because it added weight.

not long ago in the mazda web page, they announced that the car was over 250 hp, edmunds just copied of the page and waited until they released the real numbers, they edited the hp, so now its 263 hp and 280 tq here is the link http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=116868

Did you say that a moonroof would compromise the chassis?
I'm certainly no engineer, nor have I had the chance to take one of these apart to see for myself, but that's what everybody has been saying.

Apparently everybody is wrong :)
I just got my VIN and called Mazda customer service who confirmed my ETA and that my car does in fact have a Bose Stereo and Moonroof package.

WOW! There IS hope.
I want one w/a roof too, just thought it wasn't possible.

When it comes in, we'll know for sure....for now, everyone 'official' that I've talked to says it's coming with a Sun/moonroof.

Forgive my cynicism, but I just did a thorough search and build of an MS3GT on the Mazda USA site. There is mention of a 7 speaker Bose system w/6 disk CD changer, but not a single word on a sun/moonroof. Even using the upscale GT model and having printed out the window sticker, which seems to list everything... nothing.
I am on your side though and hope that you're right! I've loved my sunroofs, just as I've loved my drop tops and would hope the MS3 is available w/a roof.
It's one thing I miss in my current ride.

I know...that's why I was skeptical - I tried to build one and that option just wasn't there. Of course, you can't actually build a Sport with the Bose stereo option either, but if you look at comparison specs, it says it's part of a package....but doesn't say what package or really point to ANYTHING else that is part of a package. A package is a GROUP of options though, and so...maybe their webmonkeys need to be fired?

wierd that none of the photos of the speed 3 have moonroofs either. i guess ill have to wait until mine comes in and find out. although i still cant get an estimated arrival date.

The Bose is to the GT as it was with the '05 SP23... unique and exclusive.
When I built this GT, the tab at the top of the page said that there were "no packages available." only options... and Damn few of those.

Okay, now go to the 'features and specs' tab. Near the bottom, you'll see 'In-dash 6-disc CD changer'....and next to it a 'P' that denotes it as part of a package.
WTF?

The A3 comes in turbo 4 (I believe) and six-cylinder versions. I've heard the six-cylinder A3 rocks.
Yeh he has the Turbo 4-cylinder. It's not that quick off the line but really kicks then the RPM's get high and the turbo is screaming. Fun car to drive...definetely a smoother/floatier suspension than what a ridged mazda matchbox car would be.
Edmunds.com said the A3- 4cylinder can do a 0-60 in 6.8 secs.
The specs on the MS3 I have seen say 0-62 in 6.1.
Oh man...for the price difference I'm sure it's gonna eat him up inside. Wish me luck!!

'Sorry nondual. I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers, just posting what my own research dug up.
As I'd said before, I'm on your side and hope they do offer the roof.

Oh, I know.
Like I said, do the specs and you'll see the 6-disc offered as part of a package...but the other parts of the package are not shown.
