I was wondering. Are the AWR motor mounts really necessary for an aftermarket
exhaust. What will happen if I don't install them. Also could I put them in myself if so how hard and how long will it take to do it?

yes they are necessary (i would still get them even if you have a flexpipe)

engine will rock back and forth, exhaust will crack, you will have a leak, you will be down a ton of money, you will wish that you wouldve bought those 50 dollar mounts, you will cry, and then sell the car.

front is simple, rear will be tons of fun.

what aftermarket exhaust are you putting on?

The S pipe and J pipe have points where they connect to the block and the tranny casing. the problem is that most aftermarket exhausts do not have these mounting points and thus, the movement of the engine will cause excess movement/stress in the exhaust system and turbo/manifold assembly. a motor mount will help decrese engine movement and this stress. As far as I know, only the Vibrant (a J pipe back) exhaust has brackets to hold the J pipe against the tranny case. of course, most aftermarket exhaust systems have a flex pipe welded in, but people have still been cracking/breaking their exhaust components.

when doing the rear i didnt have to remove the manifold but we used lots of extensions to get to the thru bolt. all we removed was the battrery tray and the strut tower bar. and took a good 4-5 hours but use the write up that gar777 wrote.

heres a link to the write up i know theres some people on this forum that act like assholes when you accidentally overlook something youre looking for on a forum.

Even if you don't have an exhaust system I'd still recommend (VERY STRONGLY) that you get the mounts and mount inserts anyway. If you don't then you're motor could flex and move so much that you're exhaust manifold will end up having a leak. It happened to me. I had 2 bolts start backing out, 1 fall completely out, and 1 break off inside the head. Big pain!!! I would seriously consider buying the mounts. You won't be sorry if you do, but if you don't you're going to wish you had.

I'd hit up ********** (http://www.***************/product_p/awrfmm.htm) they're $85 shipped. or check the F/S section, I just picked up a used one for $55

Or you could get them here... they are very cheap and they are fairly easy to install. http://www.rr-racing.com/engine-mounts.htm

These are the inserts... they dont replace the stock MM they just make them stiffer and stronger. I have the front and rear rr-racing inserts and the AWR side mm inserts and I couldnt be happier. The vibration isnt too bad but it can be annoying when you use a/c.

I have a questions for you regarding the AWR side inserts: how are they held into the mounts? from looking at the mounts, it looks like they would just fall out. Can you get any good pictures of them installed?

I don't have any pics of mine but the passenger side mount comes with holes in them and some zip ties. I opted to use some bolts and washers instead because the zip ties just looked tacky imo. Plus the bolt and washer deal holds the mount in better. The driver side one has plenty there to hold it in without using either of these methods so therefore no holes in those inserts.

I went through this last year, I installed the corksport s and j pipes and after a week or so I started hearing a squeaking sound. Turns out that the s pipe broke and was rubbing the part that was attached to the turbo. Get the mounts or inserts and of course get a flex in your exhaust. I had to pull the turbo back out to have it repaired. That turned into a fun day as I had to remove everything at night take it to the muffler shop in the morning and install it all to get to work in the afternoon, I took a shower and was stil sweating when got to work LOL yeah good times.

Midpipe snapped at the flange when my motor mounts got torn to shreds...the mounts give you a lot of vibration but the stability of the engine is really nice, no more shift lash

you could always go with inserts?
they're a hell of a lot cheaper and still do the trick for my car... then again i don't have as much power
