I dropped my car off at the dealership because my engine had a little ticking noise. Well they told me it was because of the oil filter, something about the paper inside the Fram filter was not strong enough. They said with this car you should only use the mazda filter. I had never heard of that before and was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem? Also after they changed the oil and filter the tick was gone? the oil and filter were only at 2000 miles.
thanks for the help

never heard of that before unless it was a faulty filter. The filter must of restricted the flow of oil big time to your engine to make it tick. MAke sure you document that in case there is damage to your engine.
I use K&N

K&N

The one time I HAD to use FRAM was the worst ever experience. Car felt really bogged down and slow. Felt like the filter was not flowing enough.

i use fram....granted its a different type than you get off the shelf at autozone, get it through the sprint car team. still a fram none the less...no problems at all here.

edit: but k&n is a VERY nice filter...thats what i used to use.

I would have taken that old oil filter, kept it , and got a written report from the place that changed your oil. If you ran 2000 miles on a falty filter then Fram should pay for any damages that could occur. Watch for any smoke or metal chips in your engine. HEll you could have really screwed something up by not having enough oil. Not you, I mean the filters problem. IF you engine happens to blow up tommorrow then ou have no way of proving that it was a bad filter unless you document it.

Thats a good idea, but i just started driving my car and the ticking is back so i knew the dealership fed me aload of bullshit. Its going back there today.

does the MSP also have that vcts ticking thing? maybe its from that. Just a thought, not really sure. I use whatever filter Jiffy Lube puts in and yes I know I shouldnt use them, but no way was I gonna try changing my oil in the cold. I'll be doing the next one myself, most likely will be going K&N as well. BUT prior to the my 02 ES, I used to use FRAM on my 91 subaru legacy and never had a problem with it.

Fram. No problems as of yet. I'd like to try some other brands tho such as K&N to see if there's any difference in the way my car feels from using them.

I have yet to change the oil in my car as i just bought it recently but I used to use Fram on my Civic SI before i bought my MSP and it was fine. From the sound of it though I may just get OEM Mazda filters or K&N to be on the safe side.

I was lucky enough to be invited to see the SAE oil filter tests about a year ago and here is what I witnessed:

1. Fram (regular) - 97% double pass efficiency
2. Mobil 1 - 99% double pass efficiency
3. K&N - 98% double pass efficiency
4. Motorcraft - 98% double pass efficiency
5. PureOne (Premium) - 96% double pass efficiency
6. STP - 97% double pass efficiency
7. Fram ToughGuard - 97% double pass efficiency
8. Wix Premium - 98% double pass efficiency

There were a few more, but those were the only ones I took notes on, as they're the only ones I generally use. Many of these filters did much better on the single pass test, infact many had the same percentages as the mobil 1, however as we know oil passes through a filter more than once so I generally just blow off those tests. Here is another site with some good info on it... http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html
